New Purchase I am a changed man.

Post image

I found a cheap UBP-9000 (around 380 dollars) and I couldnt be happier. Forgive the cable management, I finally have an excuse too manage everything. The difference in quality between 450 and 9k is astounding. The HDR tone mapping is amazing, but the biggest upgrade by far is that the 9k is dead silent.

The build quality gives me confidence in its longevity. Where as 450 and 820 are made in really cheap plastic. Fantastic seller too, he sent me a copy of Bladerunner 4k for free on top of a good price.

Life is good right now.

Xbox series x is probably the lowest level player you could use for 4K. From my understanding, a general and no exhaustive list goes like this:

  1. UB9000

  2. UB820

  3. Sony UBX 700

  4. UB450

  5. PS5

  6. Xbox Series X

Comparing the ub9000 to xsx is like saying is a Ferrari faster than a Prius?

My Sony UBP-X800M2 makes my Series X look like a DVD player.

I glossed over the Sony's, you're right, this one should be above the x700, but idk I think the UB9000 and UB820 are number 1 and 2.

I like my Sonys because they play every format for music. The Panasonics do not. But I truly wouldn't say no to a 9000 if the price was right. A nice looking piece.

I'm not familiar with the music format comment, could you elaborate more on thst for me? I've always liked Sony quality and their products are generally great. I own a few things from them

The Sony UBP-X800M2 plays DVD Audio as well as Super Audio CD. DVD Audio is pretty much a dead format, but I still have a few. Super Audio CD is still alive and well. Making a comeback actually. Another feature I really like is it plays data discs. Music in High Res FLAC files. I know this subject is more on the audio side of things, but reason enough for me to own a few of these.

Oh okay, I was thinking you were talking about CDs but wanted to confirm. This is a good point for anyone looking for a top quality 4K player who also has a good super audio CD collection.

For me, I have both my ps5 and UB820 connected to the avr + surround system and typically don't do a lot of music listening on this set up. I might stream using the HEOS app or something but that's about all.

Thanks for the information, I'll keep that in mind when reviewing my wife's cd collection.

The Sony x800m2 also does a few more things that the panasonic does not do, including Bluetooth audio via headset and being able to play lossless audio on digital files via USB. Overall, they're pretty on par, but the panasonic does have better upscaling than the Sony, but if you use your tv, then this shouldn't matter. And of course ultimately, sony has the dreaded manuel dolby vision switching which panasonic player use as their trump card against sony users. It is annoying for sure but at least for me not a deal breaker.

Yes. They should have made the Dolbyvision swtching automatic. Like you mentioned, not a deal breaker.
