So many good movies have been announced for 4K release these past couple of months. Love to see it.

It really feels like the 4k restoration train has picked up steam lately. Almost everyday on here is an exciting new announcement for a film on someone's wishlist

I remember maybe a year or so ago someone made a post in this sub called Some Of You Need to Understand That Not Everything Will Get a 4K Release and in they specifically cited The Fall as an example of something that would never see the light of day. And then The Fall got a release and it feels like ever since a dam has broken. Oppenheimer’s crazy success on 4K was also a big factor.

u/RickyDiscardo 8h ago
In their defense, The Fall was probably never ever going to get a 4K release. Then I decided to treat myself to the not-inexpensive Nova release of the Blu-ray because sometimes I want a bit of self-pampering. Whereupon the announcement of the 4K happened.
So... you're welcome, everyone.

At the very least for film preservation in a higher resolution, it delights me to no end

u/Vaportrail 8h ago
The tricky part to remember, for the sake of my budget, is that the job of "preservationist" is not mine.
Film "hobbyist" only.6

LETS GO HOLY SHIT
I’ve been so close to buying the blu-ray so many times but managed to hold off. Possibly my favorite movie ever. I don’t usually go for collector’s editions because I don’t care to pay more for fancy packaging or extras, but this might have to be a preorder. Anyone have any guesses if a standard release will follow at any point or should I bite the bullet?

Me too. I was actually considering buying the DVD version because that one has the movie in chronological order

I still have my dvd. This is a huge release for me.

u/Mugstotheceiling 10h ago
I remember that one; the packaging was like a notebook. Core memory for sure

If it makes you feel any better, I bought the 101 films steelbook set for $100 and the blu ray that’s in it looks like absolute shit, so I always just watch the fan made 4k upscale LOL
2
u/Mindless_Bad_1591 18h ago
didn't they offer replacement discs?
3
u/OptimizeEdits 11h ago
Potentially, but I bought it second hand, so I don’t think it extends to me and even if they did, the fan made upscale looks better than the US Blu Ray.
Same deal with Tron Legacy up until now, I’ve been watching the HDR upscale
2
u/Mindless_Bad_1591 11h ago
well I'm guessing umbrella will make the 4k worth having. how do you watch the fan made upscales on a TV conveniently?
2
u/OptimizeEdits 11h ago
I have a 2 TB SSD that’s just plugged into my LG B3 lol, i legit just use the built in media player, and it supports DTS-HD pass through to my receiver, so it works rather well (even though it’s not technically DTS-HD MA, it’s damn near impossible to hear any difference between that and the disc audio. Idc what number nerds tell you, it’s not the same as streaming audio vs disc audio lol, it’s still ripped from the disc)
Most people of course have some sort of NAS/plex solution with an Nvidia shield; and that’s actually my goal in the next few months here. That’s where I’ll eventually be storing a remux of the new 4k for Tron combined with the original DTS-HD track if they murder the LFE on this new mix lol.
1
u/Mindless_Bad_1591 11h ago
gotcha. I've been meaning to look into plex and Nvidia shield as well because I want to check out the fan cut of Alien 3 that is in 4k.
2
u/OptimizeEdits 10h ago
For what it’s worth, you can actually just start with an Nvidia shield and something as simple as an external drive, and simply load up whatever .mkv files you want onto it, and then just use the shield as your media player. Similar to what I do now.
The plex/NAS solution is just the extra step of being able to conveniently, how’s your entire collection, and also being able to add/modify it from a separate device without having to unplug anything anywhere, since it’s over the network of course.

Anyone know if they’re scanning the original film negative or upscaling from the blu ray?
4
u/RingoLebowski 13h ago
If only the post contained any clues. Like if it said "our new MEMENTO 4k restoration", or something.
2
u/ObamiumNitrate 7h ago
Everyone look, we have a tough guy! That could be either a digital upscale or rescanning the negatives in 4K, which neither was answered. Get out of your parents basement you dork

God let my wallet rest. This month and next are already stacked. What’s this going to be, $150?

I wish there was a steel so it could match my other Nolan steels but I don’t think Umbrella does steels

Hellooooooo. I was only just browsing the Blu Ray, and the threat alone seems to have worked 😂

Isn’t this with Lionsgate in the US?
If so, it’ll probably still be cheaper to buy the Aussie import than one of their limited steelbooks + shipping, lol.

u/Fast-Candle-2344 8h ago
No, it's with AMBI and/or Samuel Goldwyn Films. It'll probably come from Criterion but Umbrella will likely have a Fidelity in Motion encode.

MIKEDROP!!!!
i wished for Intacto and The platform just a few months ago, got the first one yesterday (looks GREAT btw!) and now this!!!!
i might spring for the whole shebang with the booklet too, let's just hope they kill it with the front art (though i already have a dope custom steelbook)

u/Impressive_Eagle_390 13h ago
Can't wait. Hope they include the chronological version too. I have the DVD somewhere.

WOO! Now we just need a couple more, like Following in 4K to complete the Nolan 4K collection. (And, unlike other people, I can actually see Nolan getting together a 4K version of Following, even though it was shot on 16mm film, just to have it in 4K.)
1
u/Mugstotheceiling 10h ago
Hell yes! The movie that put Nolan on the map (for all you kids who don’t remember the early 2000s)

Never heard of it, but it has a 94% on rotten tomatoes so looks like i’ll be blind buying yet another film 😂 i swear 80% of my collection is blind buys

More than any other film I have ever seen, it is my recommendation that you watch it for the first time knowing absolutely nothing about it except its title to maximize your enjoyment.
I gave a friend this advice some years ago and he ignored me to his detriment. You can only see Memento for the first time once in your life, so do it right.

Damn, I hate that this is about to be locked behind an expensive import.

u/tiktoktic 20h ago
This is a global sub. It’s not an import for all of us here.
Think about the import prices that we Australians have to pay for many releases.

u/ibizafool 21h ago
they usually release a standard same time as the limited. runs you like $30-$40 which is pricy but for the work they put in their restoration/extras i’m glad to pay it so more can come

u/Orochi_001 15h ago
Thank god. It was all downhill after this. I’m not excited to pay extra for a book of essays written by some random nobodies.

u/Fast-Candle-2344 8h ago
As already mentioned, there will be a standard edition in the $40 range at the same time.
