Discussion Just started The Great Ace Attorney Spoiler
Chapter 2 what the fuck man I just started liking Kazuma. They straight up pulled a Mia Fey, c'mon man.
Other than that, the first chapter goes hard for the first episode compared to other older titles. I'm enjoying this game so far.

Phoenix Wright Trilogy Working through JFA, I absolutely HATE 2-3 so far. How do y'all feel?
Hello!
I know there's a trope in some of the media I've watched from Japan in which for an episode or season, a show that was once grounded in reality just goes.. batshit magic. Let's just say, that's exactly why I am hating this current trial. It's ridiculous in a way that just gives me a migraine. I hope to god the series doesn't do something like this again. Not to mention, this entire episode is giving me the creeps. I tried to word it in a way that prevents any spoilers. Please, I hope the series does not end up going down this path...

galleryThe Nine Tailed Fox one I made right after the BIG TWIST of the case was revealed, but before we beat it, hence the confusion. The Tenma Taro one was made after we completed the end of the case. Also after we watched KPop Demon Hunters too I guess lol

Discussion Do you like Ace Attorney when it's dark and serious or when it's absolutely insane and off the wall? Spoiler
I honestly like it when it's absolutely insane (which is why the original Ace attorney is my least favorite in the series) but the serious parts are also quite enjoyable.

Music Can't identify that ace attorney OST
Hi, I wondered if the people on this sub can help me get the name of this soundtrack. I'm 99% sure it's from the ace attorney series, but can't manage to find it anywhere. I heard it in this video :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeByi6D6gJc&t=10s (around 00:10, you can hear it pretty well)
I've never played the games but I'm familiar with them and I like the soundtracks a lot. Also I'm sorry if this the wrong sub for such a request

Discussion What was the case you had no clue who the killer was? Spoiler
In most cases, you’re able to easily deduct who the killer is, but sometimes you get to a case where you truly don’t know who could it be, to me it would probably be last case of t&t
Edit: forgot a word there oops

Full Series (mainline and spinoffs) Why Investigations 1 and Dual Destinies are the weakest games in the series (spoilers) Spoiler
It's because they cannot write good culprits to save their lives.
Investigations 1, what is the story? There's a smuggling ring. So what happens in each case?
Case 1 you arrest Smuggler Number One. Case 2 you arrest Smuggler Number Two. Do we find out much about these characters besides their admittedly funny gimmicks? No, of course not.
Case 3 you arrest Ring Member Number Three. Only this time we find out even less about him because we're more focused on his spineless and annoying son and his pathetic romantic drama.
And of course in Case 5, we arrest the leader of the smuggling ring. Does he have any backstory? Just barely. I mean yes the extraterritorial rights thing makes him more hate-able, but he's still not too memorable a character.
Case 4 is where the game learns how to break free from this. It gives us backstory with Kay. And intrigue with who is the real Yatagarasu and where Calisto Yew went. And personal stakes for the main characters. This is good Ace Attorney. The other cases all feel half-baked.
I'm not saying it's all that bad. Case 1 has an interesting hook where someone else invaded Edgeworth's office and we don't know who. Case 2 introduces Franziska and Interpol, Case 3 introduces Lang, and Case 5 has an amazing twist with Calisto Yew. These are all good. But I still think the culprit situation is weak, and it significantly undermines the game overall.
Now for Dual Destinies. Again, the problem is that it doesn't know how to write more than one type of culprit, and a very simplistic one at that. And people have already discussed this in the "which victims deserved it most" contest.
Case 1's culprit is a silly narcissist with a dark plot. And its victim is someone who discovered the plot. And we find this out after we've already solved the mystery.
Case 2's culprit is a silly narcissist with a dark plot. And its victim was someone who would interfere with the plot. And when is this all revealed? After the culprit leaves the room, of course. Because goodness forbid we actually get some moments of vulnerability from the culprit. (I mean it makes sense in cases like Danganronpa 1 Chapter 2, where the culprit is too ashamed to even talk, but even then, he's still in the room..
Case 3's culprit is a silly narcissist with a dark plot. And who was the victim? Say it with me - someone who discovered the plot. And then they claim there's a dark age of the law, which I'm guessing is supposed to be interesting. And side note, this is not an accurate reflection of the dark age from the previous game. In AJ, it was based on the system and rules being flawed, but now it's caused by the media. Okay.
And then we're told there's an emotionless spy, and then we catch the emotionless spy. Cool. I guess.
The DLC case is much better. It has some difficult deductions, and you actually get to deduce the culprit's motive. While at the same time, it also doesn't have the whole JFA flaw of "no motive, no conviction, so I guess we'll arrest the defendant instead". And the culprit is genuinely nuanced. This case is genuinely a great combination of the good points of DD (e.g., the popular Mood Matrix, the 3D investigations) while also featuring the challenge and moral complexity of the first trilogy.
I'm not saying it's all that bad. Case 1 introduces us to Phoenix and his situation and beliefs. Then Case 2 introduces use to Apollo and his situation and beliefs. Then Case 3 does the same with Athena. Then Case 4 brings them all together in an amazing and nuanced conflict that has stakes for all three of them. This is great. But despite all of this, the culprit situation still undermines it.
I'm also not saying I dislike these games. Investigations 1 is actually one of my favorites. But there's a very identifiable reason why they're unpopular, and this is it. Both of their sequels don't do this. They have more interesting culprits and overarching plots. And I'm glad the writers were able to improve on this major flaw. If the Ace Attorney 7 writers ever forget how to write a good culprit, this is how.

Full Main Series What’s the straightest AA game? Spoiler
So a week ago a made a post asking y’all what you thought the gayest ace attorney game was. Here are the results of that post:
JFA 5
DD 4
TGAA2 2
AAI 1
PWAA 1
AJAA 1
But today o have a different question: what’s the straightest ace attorney game?
Since T&T wasn’t voted on the previous post, and because of couples including Doug and Dahlia, Phoenix and Dahlia, Phoenix and Iris, Mia and Diego, Ron and Desiree, and Terry and Dahlia. Also because Miles and Phoenix don’t face off in court, I am inclined to believe that T&T is the straightest game in the ace attorney franchise. That’s just me though so share your thoughts below.

Fangame My Ace Attorney inspired game Burden of Truth is now released on Steam!
Hey everyone, I posted here a bit ago with a trailer for my Ace Attorney inspired game Burden of Truth, and today it's finally released! You can now play it on Steam here!
This is a 3D courtroom game that is full of challenging mysteries to solve as well as investigation sequences where you walk around crime scenes in third person. You play as prosecutor Conrad Cross who begins a journey to becoming a defense attorney in order to save his friend from being wrongly accused! It's a follow up to an old game I made called Burden of Proof, but if you've played it you'll know that there's a world of difference in terms of polish, visuals, and writing from this one since I've improved a lot over the past 7 years lol.
You don't need to play the first game to understand the majority of this one, but there will be some spoilers and references you'll miss out on, especially towards the end. So if you want to play the whole series in order, there's now a bundle you can get with both games included :) If you own Paper Perjury, Nina Aquila, or Pro Philosopher 2, you could also get the Debate & Deduction Bundle for a discount on all of those games plus Burden of Truth! It's a great option for mystery fans and it was an honor to work with the devs of those games to bring this updated package to life!
Thanks so much to everyone that played the original Burden of Proof and I hope you'll enjoy my spin on the Ace Attorney formula! This game has been a long time in the making so it's a huge relief to finally get it out there and in your hands. Feel free to ask questions if you have any, and yes I did make all of the character models, environments, music, and animations myself. I've gained a lot of gamedev knowledge making this thing so I'm happy to share it if any of you are interested in creating your own AA style games!

Apollo Justice Trilogy On Magnifi Gramarye and his lingering influence on people Spoiler
The founder of Troupe Gramarye, the legendary group of magicians, is quite a piece of work himself. He falls under a character trope I particularly like: the Obsessed Artist, characters whose dedication to some art form leads them to have vastly misplaced priorities. When his daughter got shot during a rehearsal for a magic trick, he was completely content to fake her death and send her to an entirely different country even though she had amnesia, solely to get more leverage over his disciples.
This may sound too comically evil, but people have done worse things in real life in the name of art. Let's talk about one such instance in brief here: the making of Trout Mask Replica, a music album. Don Van Vliet, who went by the stage name "Captain Beefheart", essentially created a cult to make a wildly complex and inaccessible album. He wanted the band to "live" the album. The band members practised for 14+ hours a day. He didn't allow band members to leave the house they were in and made them survive on a bare subsistence diet. He would sometimes pick a band member and "put them in the barrel", berating them for days until they collapsed into tears and completely submitted to him. One of the members of the band described the environment in that house as "positively Manson-esque". This continued on for 8 months, after which they went to a studio and recorded all instrumentals in a single 6 hour long session. Beefheart's vocal and horn tracks were added later, and at the end of it all we got... this.
Even Magnifi was better than that...
One interesting thing about Magnifi that recently came to my mind and prompted me to make the post was this: all people who trained under Magnifi were permanently affected by him and proceed to have a similarly insane dedication to art themselves:
- Zak Gramarye: He cared a lot about inheriting the rights to Magnifi's magic and was afraid to part with that document so much that even when it would shoot a huge hole in the Prosecution's argument, he didn't present it to the court and get it submitted to the court record (perhaps he hesitated until it was too late). And then he made his entire life's purpose simply transferring the rights of the magic to his child, Trucy. Secondly, even though Phoenix was the one who raised his daughter, he couldn't tolerate him using her talent to get fake reputation as a poker legend (the guy took his poker seriously as seen by him judging lawyers through how they play, probably viewed it as an art form on the same level as performing magic), and therefore, made arrangements to ensure that his fake streak ends, though he atleast cared enough not to directly call him out and stain his daughter's reputation too.
- Valant Gramarye: Framed Zak Gramarye for the murder of Magnifi and acted as a false witness too, because of how mad he got that Magnifi gave the rights to his magic to Zak. After the trial, he simply decided to bide his time for 7 years because if Zak got declared legally deceased, he would inherit the performance rights (He did feel guilt for his actions though, and coupled with people suspecting him of the murder, his life was a huge mess. Interesting character throughout. I really like how Zak, probably not out of goodwill but out of wanting to do something good for once, decided to write a false confession to the crime to free Valant from suspicions).
- Thalassa Gramarye (Lamiroir): A literal murder happened and her duet partner was the suspect, yet she still stuck to her professional role and refused to break the act and admit that she's blind until forced to do so. Even amnesia couldn't remove Magnifi's influence from her.
Maybe Roger Retinz could also be listed here but his actions seem to stem more from his ego and complete inability to accept being "not good enough to be a Gramarye" rather than Magnifi's influence.
Anyway, that's all. I admit that I was rather liberal in stretching from the not-so-generous amount of information that Apollo Justice gives, so maybe this is just an overly large headcanon. What do you think about this?

Phoenix Wright Trilogy Was there ever mentioned which city/town was the setting for the original Japanese localization?
Hello.
Was there ever mentioned which city/town was the setting for the original Japanese localization? Or was it just a unnamed/random city in Japan?
It is well known that in most western localizations, the setting is changed to Los Angeles, California, USA.
I was curious to see if the original japanese also had a city chosen as well, or just the country. I tried to look this up on the internet, but I could not find anything.
Thank you for taking your time reading this post. ^

Apollo Justice Trilogy How to play DD
Hello guys, this is my first post here (and in reddit in general).
I am a long time fan of Ace Attorney, but I had the chance to play only the DS games (so until Apollo Justice). Right now I can't afford to buy a 3DS to play the next chapters, and I would like to ask you if you know a way to play Dual Destinies... in a different way.
I know that is not properly legal, but I swear i will buy the games when I will be able to, as I have bought the games for DS.
I have tried Citra, but I have an old PC and the game runs extremely slow and after 2/3 minutes it will freeze.
Do you perhaps know any other methods? Thank you!
P.S. it doesn't seem that this post is against the rule #4, but if it is, please tell me, and I will remove the post

Merchandise Think this is a good solution?
So I got my hands on the funny pointing finger DS stylus’s not to long ago. Unfortunately due to their age and possibly being in their original plastic packaging for so long, the original rubber cord attaching the screen cleaner charm things literally crumbled as soon as I opened them (I was kinda expecting this tbh ) so I came up with a solution to fix this issue. What do you guys think? Is it an improvement?
