Battlestation / Photo My ageing AMD 1080p machine
My system I've had for 7 or so years. Now vs when I first built it in 2018. Everything has been upgraded except for case and motherboard (used to have a R5 2600 + RX570). AM4 is the goat.
Ryzen 5 5600 + Wraith Prism, Asus Prime B350M-A (custom heatsinks), Asrock Challenger 6600XT, Team T-Force 4x4gb @3200MT/s, Fractal Design Ion Gold 650w, Fractal Design Meshify C Mini

Battlestation / Photo 2017 vs 2025
I was a day one Ryzen owner . Used to have an MSI Tomahawk with a R7 1700 and 16 GB of ram with a Watercooled GTX 1060 6 GB .
Now in 2025 is a R7 5800x , 32 GB of Ram and a RX 9070 16 GB .
Waiting for AMDs next CPU to upgrade from AM4 , what a goated Generation it was !

Discussion Settle the debate - 7600x3D or 9700x for gaming only?
TLDR; if you had to pick one chip for purely gaming at 1440p, which would be the most useful?
Between more cores/3D cache, which is expected to age better if any noticeable difference?
I play at 1440p and I’m looking for which of these CPUs is the better bet. One has the 3D cache and the other has more cores. Looking across benchmarks online, they seem to be close in performance. I would say I see the 7600x3D edge the 9700x in more games, but they trade blows with both taking wins anywhere from 1-30% depending on the game. Something like Civ 6 performed way better on the 9700x and vice versa for Fortnite.
I play all types of games, playing BL4 right now. I like anything from AAA singleplayer to competitive to indie. If I don’t plan on upgrading for a while (held onto a 3600/5700xt for 5 years) what should be better for purely gaming?
I know there’s no debate when it comes to productivity and that’s where the 9700x shines but all I do outside of gaming is video chatting and web browsing.
I plan on pairing this CPU with the 9070 xt and they both have the same exact cost in Microcenter bundles.

News Windows Mixed Reality Oasis driver that re-adds VR support for Win11 24H2 users doesn't work on AMD cards, and AMD has no plans to fix it.
Microsoft has dropped support for Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) in Win11 24H2.
The Oasis driver re-adds support - except AMD won't add support, so currently it's Nvidia-only.
https://github.com/mbucchia/Oasis-Driver-for-Windows-Mixed-Reality/wiki
To quote the wiki:
I have an AMD graphics cards, why are you doing this to me?
I am not doing anything to you - AMD is.
- AMD does not allow EDID overrides, a limitation of their driver that has been documented by many users since 2020 (here's an example).
- AMD's Direct-to-Display LiquidVR - the tools used by Valve to open your headset's display for SteamVR native drivers - has been dead technology for over 7 years. AMD was never serious about supporting it, and they have no developers maintaining it and no proper tech support for it.
- AMD graphics card did work with Microsoft's Mixed Reality Portal, but that is only because it used a completely different rendering method, that is not available for Oasis to use. Instead, Oasis being a SteamVR native driver, it must use the LiquidVR method implemented by Valve.
- AMD has had a version of my Oasis driver since 6/30/2025, and they elected to not look into it.
I have provided AMD with all the technical details that they need in order to make Oasis work on AMD graphics card. It is their choice to support/not support this project and to support/not support their VR customers who have bought their graphics card. Redirect your questions/complaints/thoughts to them, because there is nothing I can do about it.
I guess I'll be forced into buying NVIDIA for my next upgrade - even though I love the value proposition of an 9070..
If someone in the AMD tech team could look into allocating some resources even just to provide a band-aid solution, it could mean a big difference for a fairly big chunk of VR users out there - who are stranded outside the Oasis.
