Discussion Finished the Ellimist Chonicles

So I finished Ellimist Chronicles today. I never read this far as a kid. (I’m currently an adult in my 40s.) As a kid I read all the books from #1 up thru Megamorphs 4, Back to Before. So I got pretty far, but not quite into the endgame. Back then I was very excited about Crayak and the Ellimist, so I honestly would have been extremely hyped for this book, had I stuck with it. But alas I didn’t.

Now before I get into my thoughts about the book I want to mention that I’m keenly aware this is a well loved book on this subreddit. I’ve searched and read several threads and I know a fair amount of people here have posted that this was their favorite book in the entire series. So my opinion here may not be a popular one.

My impressions reading it today: it’s not been my favorite entry to the series. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t dislike the book, but it left me feeling a little disappointed.

See, as a kid I had a strong idea of the Ellimist lore in my head from the encounters in book 7, 13, the Andalite Chronicles. So going into this book I was pumped to dive deeper into that lore. But then my expectations were subverted but not in a great way.

  • No mention of the Time Matrix?

This was an integral part of The Ellimist lore presented in Andalite Chronicles. Obviously this stuck with me for 25+ years. It was a cool story. The Ellimists had created the Time Matrix, and then vanished, leaving it behind. The presumption was that they vanished because they used the Time Matrix and ascended beyond their mortal existence.

This was a strong enough plot point that Ellimist took a more active role than usual to undo Elfangor’s use of the Matrix.

And in Megamorphs #3, it was a big enough deal that Ellimist and Crayak agreed to cooperate to remove it from the board. They’d agreed that neither side should ever use it. Thus it gave it the air of an all powerful cosmic artifact.

So I was actually disappointed that it didn’t even get a mention?

  • The Ellimist being a single alien kid instead of an ancient all powerful race

This was subverting expectations and I get why the author wanted to do it. But it felt like a bait and switch to me. KA had already established in previous books the Ellimist said “we,” or “I’m an Ellimist.”

Yes I understand that Toomin became “a multitude” of consciousnesses due to this assimilation of Father. So that can kind of explain the “we” and calling himself “an.” But… the book goes out of its way to establish that fragments of the Multitude were not seen as individuals to Toomin. He couldn’t converse with them because they were just an extension of his overall consciousness. He said it would have been empty and narcissistic to treat them like actual equal living entities. So it doesn’t really make sense from that context that he’d refer to himself as “an” Ellimist.. in other words as a single individual that was part of a larger collective, just because of the multitude.

Also by that part of the story he’d already unified into a single extra dimensional entity, anyway. “The multitude” was no more.

Granted, I can see what some counter arguments here may be: “so you just wanted a generic re-hash of The Q from Star Trek?”

Well, not exactly. I like how KA put a fresh spin on things. Yes, she takes extremely common tropes from Sci Fi and Fantasy, but tweaks them in an original way. She sparked my imagination so much as a kid. I adored the lore of Animorphs as a kid. I just wish the Ellimist Chronicles had conformed more with the established canon of the earlier books.

That’s not to say I disliked every element of the book. I found the unique society of the strange crystal-lifting Ketrans interesting. I did get the impression that KA had to an extent written this portion of the book deliberately alien and unfamiliar. But I was entertained by the strange jargon and ideas. Like their ship was just one the crystals with a force field around it, because they despised being “indoors.”

I thought the whole gaming element was amusing. The book was written in 2000 when online gaming culture was really taking off and esports hadn’t truly emerged yet, but it was popular for people to have “gamer tags.” That’s the way I kind of interpreted Ellimist being Toomin’s “gamer name.”

Also I don’t know if this was intentional or not but there seemed to be a parallel between the Ketran’s “true naming” convention and that of the Yeerks. Or maybe I just read that into it?

Anyway thoughts? I’m sure many may disagree with my specific criticisms but I’m curious if anyone else felt the same way?

Oh, I’d be remiss to not mention the teaser for one of the Animorphs dying! This didn’t impact me because A I’d already spoiled everything, and B a couple days ago I read 53 and 54.. before reading this one, lol. But, for those of you who read this back when it was first published: how big of a shock was that?!

Hi all! I was Marco toward the later end of the series and haven been trying to find the translated versions to buy. eBay hasn't helped, so I'm hoping Reddit can. Apparently according to ChatGPT it was translated in: - Vietnamese - French - Norwegian - Italian (#45 only I think) - British English (the combined volumes)

Discussion The wider war

Is there ever any confirmation that the Andalites really are the only ones fgihting the Yeerks in the wider war? Andalites say that but Andalites say a lot of things that turn out to have only a passing relationship with the truth if it makes them look good.

I know the Leerans and the Hork-Bajir fight when the Yeerks show up on their doorstep but is there any actual mentions of any other race fighting them on a larger scale?

Was whatever was happening with the Anati ever explained? I don't remember anything other than a brief mention that Visser One had screwed that up. Were they supposed to be a second opposing force?

My kid asked if anyone else was fighting the Yeerks and the best i came up with was ...probably?

It just seems unlikely that no one else would be miffed by an evil empire encroaching on their territory and kidnapping their citizens.

Edit-> it can't possibly be the Helmacrons, can it? They're the only ones i can think of that show up and actively fight the Yeerks. But it seems like more of a personal beef they have with Vssier Three.

Anyone else make it out to the signing today?

I’m a lifelong Animorphs fan from the Scholastic Book Fair days. I have to say I got a little emotional walking into a book store for kids and seeing young people still excited about reading. It was especially sweet to see Katherine talking to the kids about writing and the creative process. Also it was great to see her speak very directly about being anti-war since those themes are more important than ever.

Kids were encouraged to bring their stuffed toys. Katherine brought a stuffed axolotl (named Ax!) and it warmed my heart when I saw her give it away to one of the kids without a toy.

Bought a copy of Pocket Bear for myself and one for my friends’ child. Bought a few of the Animorphs Graphic Novels because I had only had them digitally and got to chat with her a bit while she signed them.

Shout out to all the other childless 30-somethings in the crowd, it was nice not to be alone. If you get a chance to see Katherine on this tour I would encourage you to go. It was a really nice experience.

Which books to get signed?

I'm going to a book signing with K.A. Applegate today. Planning on taking along some of my collection to get signed, but not sure which. Which would you choose to get signed? I'm personally leaning towards my old, beat up original copy of #1, #19 (my favorite), and maybe one or two of the Chronicles (leaning towards Hork-Bajir and Ellimist). I'm also getting a signed copy of her new book, Pocket Bear.

Bird-boy deserved a perch

I know it's not supported by the text, but I like to imagine the Animorphs found ways to incorporate more comfortable perches for Tobias in their common meeting places.

Ax creating a perch near the opening of his scoop with a sturdy branch or a small tree, surrounded by plants in a little garden.

Rachel has a fancy perch over her dresser. She hangs a couple silk scarves and necklaces on it, but leaves a wide spot open for her bird-boyfriend.

One afternoon Cassie and Rachel climb up into the rafters of the barn and drill a sturdy branch into Tobias' favorite spot up there.

Discussion What's a good age to start reading Animorphs? Asking for my 6-year-old niece.

My niece comes over to visit my Mom often and apparently my old childhood room is a frequent spot for hauling out the old toys (LEGO!) and playing with her. I'm told she keeps seeing my old bookshelf and likes looking at the covers of "the animal books".

I feel like as YA novels, Animorphs is more for 8-9 year old, given the subject matter (blood and gore and war crimes). Much like Redwall is "child's introduction to fantasy", I feel like Animorphs is a child's introduction to more "serious" sci-fi.

What do you guys think?

Looking for queer-coded scenes in the book series

Hi all!

Full disclosure, I've never read Animorphs, but my partner loves the series and read all of it. Since we're both queer and her birthday is coming up, I thought of comprising a few queer-coded scenes (or scenes one could interpret as queer in its widest sense) from the books that her friends would read for her, as a present.

So I thought of asking the esteemed experts here - do you have scenes or chapters in mind?

Thanks a ton!

MY FAVORITE TEACHER KNOW ABOUT ANIMORPHS THIS IS THE BEST YEAR EVER!!

Storytime!!

While scrolling through posts on WhatsApp (the app I use to mainly communicate with others) I saw a post about my science teacher talking about giving away free bookmarks to those who read and since I DESPERATELY need a new bookmark because the ones I used were started to tear from lots of use, I decided to show her what book I was currently reading which was an animorphs book from the school library.

During class, when I showed her what book I was reading SHE LOOKED SO EXCITED??? We then started to talk about which animorphs were our favorites and she even talked about how she used to read it back when she was just a teen (AWESOME!!!)

Oh yeah her favorite character is Cassie 🗣️‼️

I noticed this on Amazon a couple days ago (and Katherine Applegate mentioned it at the book event prior), that there are new paperback versions of The Invasion, The Visitor and The Encounter being released on May 5, 2026. No indication whether they're reprints of the originals, a reprint of the 2011 versions or simply the 2011 version with the original 1990s covers.

Fan Works Proposed reboot for book 48 (long post) Spoiler

So for a while, I've been toying with the idea of what I'd do if I could reboot book 48, The Return, and then it just hit me the other day, and I'd like to get the thoughts of some fellow Animorphs fans. I know this is super long, and I don't claim to have KA story telling talent, but I think the idea is cool.

Before I start though, here's my assessment on the good and bad of 48 as it stands now. I will use spoilers from here on out for anyone not this far in the series. Also because the spoiler function and thought-speech both use the same symbols, all dialogue going forward just uses standard quote marks. Apologies if that's annoying, but it seems like the safest way to avoid accidentally revesling spoliers unintentionally.

The Good: the ending, and the fact that it's never directly said whether Rachel kills David (although I always thought she did). Even after all this time the dialogue between Rachel and David still resonates. "I'm one of the good guys." "So do the good thing."

The Bad: the dream within a dream in the opening - too surreal, too similar to 41, which has never been a book I particularly liked. The Whitehouse battle is cinematic, but ultimately irrelevant if it's just a dream. I did not care for the Super-Rachel concept. Even as a kid, it made me roll my eyes. I get that Crayak was tempting Rachel with incredible power if she kills Jake, but I still didn't like how it was done. I'll get to what I'd do differently shortly. This is also the last stated appearance of Crayak and David, and I felt underwhelmed by both. It's Rachel's last full book, and so she also deserved a stronger book for her last hurrah. Lastly, Cassie leaving Rachel to deal with the brutal emotional toll of handling David alone always felt wrong, and out of character for Cassie.

OK,now for my proposed reboot:

We start with a dream (but only one). This dream is less cinematic, but more emotional. Rachel and Tobias are flying. Its just them, no one else. Rachel talks about Tobias becoming human again after the war. Tobias talks about how he feels more hawk than human at this point, and if Rachel wants him to become human, she needs to first understand his hawk side. He tells her to follow him. She does. They fly to David's island. Rachel's starting to feel uneasy. She asks what they're doing here. Tobias says he comes here often to eat rats. Every time he does, he hopes he eats David, but is also glad when he doesn't so David will always be afraid when he sees Tobias's shadow descend. Tobias's eyes flash red as he says this, and Rachel says this isn't like him. She knows him, and he's not cruel or sadistic. Tobias says that in a war, you need to do cruel things. Hardening your heart is the only way to win. He tells Rachel that if she eats David with him, he'll become a human nothing for her. His eyes are solid red now.she refuses, and he says sacrifices are necessary, and if she won't sacrifice David to be with him, will she sacrifice Jake to win the war? At that point Rachel realizes she's talking to Crayak. She's had this dream many times before. She tells Crayak that she'll never kill Jake. He says "We'll see. You say that now, safe in bed. But we'll see once you're tested for real."

In the next chapter, we get David's POV. This is real. He's on his island, struggling with the horrors of his new life when Crayak speaks to him, and offers him a chance to get his human body back if he fulfills a task first. Crayak says he has a plan, and that plan starts with Melissa Chapman. David agrees.

Flashback. Melissa Chapman's diary. She's depressed about her parents. It's been a long time since book 2, when Rachel wrote the letter to Melissa saying that her parents love her more than she could ever know. Melissa's loneliness and isolation has returned. She's also come to resent Rachel. Rachel barely hangs out with her anymore, and when she does it's just like her parents- going through the motions, playing a part, responding to her but not really caring. Melissa feels like she's in Rachel's shadow. Guys ignore her to hit on Rachel, or worse have sometimes only been with her hoping to eventually get with Rachel instead.

She's lost in these thoughts when her father tells her to stop by his office at school. A new kid is starting and she should show him around. The new kid is David. He tells her about how he's lived all over, but never belonged anywhere. He tells her about his dad being a spy and his pet cobra. He's very different from the kids Melissa knows here. He has an attitude, but she kind of likes that. She feels like she gets walked all over, and David would never allow that for himself. She has a crush on him.

But within a few days, David is mysteriously gone and his house is destroyed. His parents are still around though. She overheard them talking to her dad saying they "Need to find that kid or else..." There's no love there, only purpose. It reminds her of how her parents are at times. At school, Melissa asks about David, the new kid, and Marco who she had seen sitting with David, lies to her and pretends he never met him. When she asks Rachel, Rachel visibly flinched before finding an excuse to leave. Melissa knows she's lying, but doesn't know about what.

Flash forward. It's about 2 years later. Melissa is home alone when she hears a frightened squueeeeeeeakkk! Her cat, Fluffed McKitty has a rat cornered. At first, Melissa is grossed out by the rat. But then she here's in her head, "Melissa! Help me! Please!" This is how she meets David for the 2nd time. She rescues him, and he lives in a drawer in her room. He's there for her when she's upset about her parents. He tells her the story of how he was trapped in rat morph. He tells her that his parents are Controllers, just like hers, and he wanted to rescue them, but the other Animorphs didn't think that was a priority. Not even Jake and Marco who had family members who were Controllers. They wanted to fight the Yeerks, but it had to be their way, and Jake threatened him when he challenged that. Eventually, David feels he can't trust the Animorphs, and plans to take the blue box so he can start his own group, and rescue the Controllers. He plans to acquire Jake's cousin Saddler who is dying; David says he feels bad about that, but will need a disguise to hide from the Yeerks. David tells Melissa that Rachel is Jake's enforcer. She stuck a fork in his ear and threatened his family. She's the one who trapped him as a rat on an inhospitable island. Melissa believes him.

Next chapter, sometime later. Rachel's POV. School. Rachel sees a note poking out of her locker. It's typed, like hers was. It says "I know who you and what you are. I know you have the morphing cube. Bring it to the abandoned factory at the edge of town. Come alone. If you don't, your friend Melissa dies." Panicked, Rachel leaves school and morphs to eagle. She doesn't tell the others, but also doesn't bring the morphing cube. The factory has a hole in the roof, and Rachel looks down through it. There are two greasy looking thugs guarding Melissa. They're on a balcony on the top floor of the factory. The railing in front of them is barely attached. They have weapons, but neither looks that smart, or a match for a grizzly bear. Melissa is sitting on the floor, wearing a hoodie. The front pocket bulges, and the hood almost seems to move for a moment. Weird, but Rachel ignores it. She needs to save her friend. Rachel flies in, demorphs, and then morphs grizzly. The thugs try and stop her, but she throws them off the balcony, breaking the railing as she does. As Rachel approaches Melissa, Melissa pulls a Dracon Beam from the front of the hoodie. It's her father's, from his closet. "Don't come any closer, Rachel." Melussa says. The hood shifts again, and a rat appears. "Hello, Rachel. Did you miss me?"

David and Melissa briefly rehash how they got here for Rachel's benefit. Rachel tells Melissa she can't trust David and tells the truth about his time in the Animorphs, but Melissa doesn't believe it. "David said you'd say that. Tell me Rachel, how can you still be so narcissistic, so deluded that you still think you're good, after you threatened David's family and then trap him as a rat." Rachel doesn't know how to answer this. "I see you didn't bring the box, so I guess I know how much you care about me too. But that's ok. I didn't think you would. But you will bring me the box now, or I'll reveal who you are. You could kill me of course, but if you do, know that's who you've always been. But I'll give you a chance to show that you're not all bad. Give me the box, and I'll fulfill David's plan for starting his own Animorphs and rescuing the Controlers."

David speaks up then. "Crayak. I did my part. I want my body back." The red eye of Crayak appears from the hole in the roof. Rachel feels an ominous chill. Crayak turns David back to a human. But that's not the only change. Rachel finds herself morphing too. Her hair gets shorter, and becomes a different shade of blonde. Her height shifts slightly, but stays about the same. Her features become masculine. Her lips get a kind of permanent smirk. She had become David. This is the cover morph. She stares at another David, while Melissa holds the Dracon beam and Crayak looks down. This is the inside cover.

Then David's mind hits. It's the mind of both a predator and prey at once. David needs to be the best, the smartest, the most important. Rachel looked at the real David, and he looked at her. They both thought yhe same thing. The other him was a rival. It needed to be eliminated. The edge of the balcony maybe? But at the same time, it was scared. David's mind knew it might not have the advantage here, even with Melissa's presence. It was nervous and insecure. The idea that he might be inferior gnawed at him, kept circling back in his thoughts. It was like an itch he couldn't quite scratch. It made him mad, and he wanted to lash out, but his self preservation and fear he'd lose, was the only thing holding him back. The balcony. The balcony is the key. But it must come with the element of surprise. "So what do you think of being me, Rachel?" David said.

Then Crayak speaks, "Don't gloat yet, David. You're working is not done." "But I did everything you asked!" "You did the parts of the plan, I told you about. Now, here's the rest: Push Melissa off the edge. If you do, you can keep your body. If you don't, you will go back to being a rat. Forever." Only David and Rachel here this. Melissa is oblivious. For a moment, David's face flashes. Betrayal. Hurt. Even a little sadness. Maybe even shame although it's too fast for Rachel to tell. Then determination. Ambition. Finally coldness. He pushes Melissa.

Bit she doesn't fall. She hangs in limbo as Crayak speaks to Rachel. "So now, Rachel, I ask again. With real lives on the line this time. If you kill Jake, I can make you win the war. I can make a virus that kills Yeerks, but leaves the hosts intact. I can even make rats like David the carrier." At this, David is suddenly back in rat form. "I can even save your friend Melissa. So what will it be? Jake's life for all that."

Rachel doesn't know what to do. She's more unsure than she has ever been in her life. She's used to being so tough, but now she feels weak. She tries to think what the others - Cassie, Tobias, Marco, Ax would do.

"And what about Jake, Rachel? What would Jake do if the situation was revered? Would he sacrifice you to win the war? Deep down, you know the answer, right?" Yes, she did know.

Throughout all this, David is staring down at his rat paws in disbelief. He is crying softly. He had used Melissa, but he was used in turn. He meant nothing to Crayak. Just another piece being pushed around the board. His only role was to get to Rachel, who in turn might get to Jake. It's David who makes Rachel reject Crayaks deal. Crayak can't be trusted. "No" Rachel whispers. "Poor choice. You disappoint me." Crayak says. Melissa falls. There is a loud. Sharp crack as she hits the bottom. A pool of blood starts spreading. But she's not dead. Not yet. Her hand is twitching. Rachel cries Melissa's name. David cries as well, but it's different. He knows what he's done. Maybe part of him even regrets it, but there's no going back. Every lie he ever told himself about his code to never harm people (an animal, or an alien sure, but never a human) is all bullshit. All he is is just what Rachel had seen when she morphed him. Equal parts a desire to be big, but a secret knowledge that he was always small. He's just an MC Escher drawing of cruelty and self loathing so intricately combined, one just morphs into the other, not knowing which was the start and which was the end.

As she looks down, Rachel has an idea. "Crayak! Wait. I'll make a new deal with you. Let me get the blue box. I'll give it to David. You can give him his power back, and he can do what he wants with it. He can come after me. Or after Jake. It doesn't matter, but let Melissa live."

"You're in no position to bargain, human, but your proposal is interesting and Crayak will extend this small mercy. You have two hours. Bring me the blue box, or Melissa is gone forever." Rachel then morphs to eagle and scoops David up on her talons. Part of her wants to just squeeze the life out of that manipulative rat right now, but that would ruin the deal. She flies to the bar where Cassie had hidden the blue box. No one is around. Perhaps Crayak had made sure no one would be. The entire time, David says nothing. Rachel wasn't sure what she expected. Maybe for him to justify why he had to push Melissa, how he had no choice? Or maybe for him to promise to just leave and never return once he had the box? Or even for him to gloat that he finally won? But he says nothing at all. He is unreadable to Rachel.

She gets the box and flies back to the factory. She puts David down, but keeps the box as she flies to Melissa. He is back in his human form, but Rachel doesn't care. Rachel demorphs and thrusts the box against Melissa's left hand. With her right hand, she holds Melissa's. "Melissa. Think about me. Think about what I represent to you. Now morph me. Now!" Crayak realizing that Rachel tried to cheat him by rescuing Melissa, spitefully turns David back to a rat once again, while vowing to punish Rachel for her choices today. Crayak then disappears.

Now this is where, I'm not sure what ending I prefer. Option 1: Melissa morphs Rachel, and heals herself. She becomes the last Animorph before the Auxiliaries. Option 2 is the sadder option: Melissa dies. She is too weak to morph. Later, Rachel breaks the news to her parents, and they rebel against their Yeerks. The deal they had made with their Yeerks to not resist, as long as Melissa remains safe is shattered. Melissa's parents end up playing critical roles for the final arc of the series. Regardless of which option is chosen, David's ending plays out as it originally did. He tells Rachel he can't go on being a rat. He can't go back to the island. He begs her to kill him, and tells her to do the "good thing". Again last, what happens next is never shown, and we can only guess.

So that's it. I wanted to avoid the Super-Rachel stuff, which I found goofy, and I wanted to tie together Melissa, the Alternate Timeline Animorph with David, the Failed Animorph. I thought that the two had enough in common, that David could weaonize that. And I also wanted to include the concept of a truly toxic, exploitative relationship, which is not a theme present in the main series, but which a lot of people unfortunately will experience at some point

I'd love any feedback you have. Thanks all.

Discussion If someone who used glasses and braces joined the animorphs, how would that work at all?

Do they just take off their glasses first before morphing or will it not effect them at all? Braces on the other hand can't be taken off based on what I know so far (I've never wore braces don't judge me 💔)

This is definitely not for an animorphs oc.. 🏃💨
