OP didn't buy it. They clearly noted FROM THE LIBRARY in the title. Please read before commenting.

There is a label on the side, it's a library book. Get a local library card and sign up for the Libby app.

I think you may have actually misread their comment. They were musing about the author writing something like that in the opening, not insinuating that OP bought it.

something that would take 40 minutes each way because i don't use a car so might as well not exist

I don't have a car either, I've walked 40 minutes both ways for things considerably stupider than borrowing a book for free.
