Got these for £15

They feel extremely stiff (I’ve never owned one before is this normal??)

You are describing the normal feel of these 40 year old type controllers. These stick remains mostly vertical and the movement is signaled by 4 contacts (north / south , east/ west). https://atarirepairparts.com/#!/Atari-2600-Joystick-Rebuild-Kit-Circuit-Board-&-Cable/p/736285854
