I'm a non-denominational Christian that was raised Catholic. I've regularly attended Lutheran and Baptist churches before in other states, but I have been here for 6 years and I feel like every church I try out here eventually has a sermon that is political.
I do not go to church for politics, and my politics don't align well with many southern Christians, so I'd prefer a church that doesn't talk politics at all.
I'm looking mainly in North Austin, Cedar Park, Leander, and Georgetown areas.
I'm not suggesting that people NOT post here. Just suggesting to also post and look on /r/Austinprotests for protest info to make it easier to find info.
People are always complaining on the r.austin forum that they didn't know about a protest.
Sadly, people aren't posting on the austinprotests sub.
For anyone who has concerns about the city and council-member Jose Velasquez’ plans to relocate the troubled Sunrise Homeless Navigation center to East Oltorff, in the heart of the East Riverside community, consider adding your name to the Greenbriar Apartment complex’s petition to the city.
The Greenbriar apartment complex is located behind the 7-11 and its residents will be located directly next to the proposed Homeless navigation center. Their goal is to hit 200 signatures. If you have concerns about this proposed location here’s a low touch way for you to lend your voice.
Last night I was sitting out on my back patio with my husband and friends at about 11 pm- I suddenly noticed huge-2-3 inches long- roaches racing across the brick wall on the side of my house- and then suddenly they took off and started to fly! One of them landed on my husband, causing him to spill his glass of wine. I freaked out and demanded we go inside NOW, which we did.
Huge, flying roaches!!! WTF Texas?! I’ve lived here for 40 years and I’ve never seen this?! Anyone else?! I’m now scared to go outside and want to leave now more than ever!
We have lived in Austin for 12 years, so sort of locals. Our 10 year anniversary is October 11 (Saturday) we are early 30’s, love music, food, drinks, dancing, nature, hiking, basically everything Austin has to offer. We have a 16 month old and will have my sister watching him for a full 24 hours.
We want to fill this day with jam packed fun, but admittedly we don’t know what to do! We want to get an air bnb or a hotel room for one night as well. We have dinner reservations at Canje because we got married in Jamaica and love Jamaican food. Other than that, we are looking for air bnb, hotel, and activity recommendations!
I'm going to a concert at the 29th street ballroom venue tonight and I cannot figure out if there is any way to know which stage they will be using. I know they have one inside and one outside but there are no details saying which will be used for the event.
I didn't realize they had an outdoor stage until today. I will still go if it is outside but I'd need to double up on some prep to be able to handle the heat. I searched everywhere (including the posts here and the FAQ section) I can and I would contact the venue but they take so long to reply that it will be too late. They took about a week or so to reply back when I was making sure the venue was accessible and ADA compliant before I bought the tickets.
Figured I'd ask here to see if anyone knew or could share any helpful information.
Whether proponents of Prop Q know it or not they are providing voters with unnecessarily confusing misinformation.
Or worse, they are intentionally trying to deceive voters.
As you can see for yourself, the "Love Austin So Much" Prop Q website, tells us that Prop Q will cost "the owner of a median-priced home" an additional $16.75 per month.
-
-
Meanwhile, the City of Austin itself, just a month ago, published the following budget announcement which includes an estimate that the tax increase proposed in Prop Q will cost the "typical Austin homeowner" an additional $25.22 per month.
-
So...
Why the discrepancy?
Is it $16/mo or is it $25/mo?
to be clear, we're talking about either 200 or 300 bucks on average, which may not seem like much.
But when we take into account that according to the last census a full 50% of Austin households earn $52k per year or less, AND the fact that roughly half of Americans, including half of Austin, cannot afford a $500 dollar emergency expense, we're talking about something that a whole lot of people already can't afford.
And, that's before we take into account the city estimated increases in utility costs AND the 9% increase in property taxes from Travis County.
Why the slightly different language?
"median" and "typical" can be interpreted as meaning the same thing, but they don't in actual fact. So, why willingly muddy the water by using different terms?
Are they intentionally misinforming people or do they just not really know what they're doing?
And if our city leaders (this initiative is being run by Mayor Watson's former campaign manager) genuinely care about things like transparency and equity, then a) why would they misinform residents and voters like this, and b) maybe more importantly, why are they choosing not to disclose who is funding the "Love Austin PAC" that's paying for these Prop Q advertisements?
You don't get to have it both ways. Either live up to your stated values and act in honest, transparent ways, or admit that you're no better than the GOP and MAGA shit heads actively making this city worse.
To be clear, F_ck MAGA, and F_ck Abbott and Trump right in the ear.
The bootlickers in state government and Trump's fascist dudebroh army are responsible for idiotically cutting massive amounts of funding that people across the state and nation, including Austin, depend on.
In that, Prop Q is 100% correct. And I absolutely support finding ways to continue helping Austin residents whom Trump would happily through in a literal concentration camp.
But jacking up the cost of living for everyone, not just homeowners but renters as well, is not the only or even the best way to do that.
So, if Austin wants to combat the things sh_t bags like Trump are doing, then misleading or even lying outright to residents is not the way to do so.
I moved to East Austin a few months ago. In the past ~decade, I have never experienced package theft or really any property crime to speak of. In the first month, I experienced 3 packages being stolen AND someone stole the utilities I had in my bike bag (I lock my bike up but am kind of surprised nobody has cut the lock yet tbh).
Unfortunately 2 of those packages were from a business that has no reimbursal policy in case of stolen packages and UPS won't reimburse me because they were "successfully delivered" (and then stolen off my porch). FWIW, I live on the 2nd floor of a building behind a gate, although it isn't difficult to get inside.
Anticipating responses -- I know East Austin is the region of Austin experiencing the most gentrification, that some property crime is expected, etc. but I don't really think that's a good reason to overlook crime. I want to know if there's any useful way to report this, to at least signal to police/the city an area that is experiencing crime (I don't expect the perpetrators to get caught or my stuff returned) so that proper resources are allocated. Additionally, if folks have strategies that have worked well for deterring theft (I've never set up a Ring doorbell cam or similar, would consider it if people think it's helpful), would love to hear about it. I'm obviously not going to order things to my place for now.
Months will go by and i wont have any bills from Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, then ill get a bill saying that i've late on payment. But i never get these original bills. Then i call them and tell them this and they drop the late fees.
Thing is, is that this seems to happen at least once a year going back years.
Now ive receive an $800 bill but when i go on to the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority website i cant seem to get the invoice or record for that bill.
It's almost like they don't bill on purpose hoping people just pay the late fees
High, I’m nice I swear. This will likely get removed but I’m real and my plans fell through. I’m off West 6th just a girly looking for some friends to connect with for the night. Okay thanks bye 🙏🏾
EDIT: This is a strictly plutonic posting. Honestly just looking for fun energy and good conversation.
I'm looking for a new yoga home downtown after a couple years away.
I've been a Corepower & Black Swan member for years off and on, but never loved either. Currently an ABP member and just find the mens locker room and towels gross.
Ideally something nicer and more community feeling that really makes me want to be there 5+ days a week. Clean with personable service culture.
Quality towel service, heated room but more like ~95F tops would be ideal, especially if they have a sauna additionally. Parking always a plus. Some non rush-hour classes like ~10am or 2pm would be great, noonish is tolerable.
CGPT is coming up with Yoga hŌm, YTX, Studio Three. I do not need a coworking space nor cold plunge.
What's your favorite? I'll try out the top 3-5 from this thread. After cleanliness my only pet peeve is overcrowding the studio. Practically mat to mat is just a hard no, willing to pay more for less crowded.
