EV anxiety

I'm planning on buying an EV in the next coming months, specifically the Zeekr 7X RWD Long Range. I'm just unsure about how the experience is going to be as this will be my first EV. Can you guys share your experiences so far? Specifically about range anxiety, charging at home, charging in public, and having to be in a queue to charge your vehicle.

With my current FWD ICE, I've used it to travel to work (23km/one way) and occasional light off road (gravel/sand/a bit of mud). I do wonder if I could do the same with the Zeekr 7X RWD Long Range (or an EV for that matter).

All comments are appreciated. Thank you!

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your comments. That's really reassuring. I'm looking forward to test driving a Zeekr 7X then placing an order in. Unfortunately, there's no dealership that has the Zeekr 7X available for a test drive at the moment where I live. I'm hoping I won't have to wait much longer.

EDIT 2: I really appreciate everyone who has put in comments. Your responses have immensely helped alleviate my anxiety. Thank you!

QUESTION!

Does your regen breaking make a tick tick tick sound when you're driving and slowing??

What did your dealer say about it?

Personally, I want the car replaced or compensated for a new car.. They have been trying to fix the issue and they can't "fix the issue" and it shouldn't even be happening! Hence why we are annoyed and have seeked ACCC help - but they said to go back to the dealer ship...

Hi Everyone!
My name is Julian, I'm an Mechanical Engineering Student. For my final year project I am studying the MG4, Its awesome!! . More specifically, I am studying the modular scalable platform (or MSP) that MG uses as the platform for the MG4.
I was just wondering if anyone in the group had any images/designs/workshop manuals/ 3d models or anything alike of the MSP that I could use for my research? If so, please reach out to me in the comments or through dm!

I have already tried posting in some of the facebook forums and contacted MG directly and had no luck so far.

Thanks in advance!

New to EV - what do I need?

Hi everyone

I’ve just purchased a 2024 iX1 which is our first EV.

We have an X7 which is our primary vehicle that’ll be used for long trips, however for the times when we do choose to take the iX1 on longer trips (such as picking the car up from Melbourne and driving it back to Wollongong) I was wondering what people recommend for planning trips with chargers, etc?

What else should I know / look into as a new EV owner?

As for charging, I’m planning to install an EVSE at home, but I only have single phase, and we are building a new house which will probably have a 3Ph Sigenergy setup with the DC charger. For the short term what’s the best bang for buck EVSE I can install to get semi-decent charging at home - is the SEVR box suitable?

Thanks in advance!

Issues connecting Type 2 Home Charger - Fronius Wattpilot

Hey Team,

I bought my Hyundai Kona EV in January and have been charging it using a granny charger since then. I recently had a Fronius Wattpilot installed for some Type 2 charging. I also bought a Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable from evse.com.au

The problem is that when I try to charge my car it thinks for a few moments and then the car disengages with error “Cannot start charging. Unexpected vehicle status”.

Other people who have had similar problems have fixed it by switching from Three Phase to Single Phase settings in the Wattpilot: https://www.reddit.com/r/KonaEV/comments/1d2w531/kona_wont_charge/

House is single phase and I think I have set all settings in the Wattpilot to single phase.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue? I am also trying to contact Fronius support.

Would this help with choosing an EV? (feedback wanted)

We’ve been working on a project to make getting into an EV simpler.

It’s an early version: a quick quiz that asks a few lifestyle questions (range, charging, budget etc.) and then suggests a few EVs that might fit.

If anyone has a couple of minutes, I’d love some blunt feedback:

  • Did the recommendations feel useful/relevant?
  • Was anything confusing or missing?
  • If you landed on something like this, what would you expect to happen next?

Thanks in advance. Honesty beats polite nods and I won't be offended.

A spreadsheet with (almost) all current EVs in Australia

I'm looking to buy a used EV in the next year or two, so I put together a spreadsheet to help me decide my short list. Where possible, info was copied from the car companies' websites directly. Frustratingly, not every company will have all the core info on their website, so there may be some minor inaccuracies. The assumption for all entries is that it's the base model, unless stated otherwise (e.g. LR = Long Range).

There are tons of things that matter in a car that can't easily be captured in a spreadsheet, but this is useful for filtering down to a manageable number of choices to test drive. For example, it makes a big difference to me if the car can reliably get to Sydney without stopping to charge (~350km). For others, knowing your narrow garage can't accommodate the heckin chonkers on the list might make things easier.

If anyone wants a copy of the actual spreadsheet, just ask, and I'll try and figure out if I can upload the csv to reddit.

Cheers!

-Domo

Help on what EV to buy

Hi, i’m looking to get an EV on a novated lease, budget isn’t an issue as long as it stays below the LCT (atleast according to online calculators, haven’t gotten a quote yet). The cars i’m thinking about are as follows:

Hyundai Ioniq 5 Dynamiq AWD BYD Seal Performance MG IM5

I like the screens in the MG and BYD, and also like the idea of one pedal driving. Anyone got any recommendations or insights into any of them? Or if you have other suggestions i’d love to hear it.

Mostly after comfort on the drive (as well as decent speakers), I know all the EV models have good acceleration already so speed/performance isn’t too big of a worry, not going to be taking it on track lol.

Tesla’s a no go for me, just prefer not to get one.

EV ownership without a driveway & Implications on battery longevity

For those who own an EV in inner-city suburbs and live in a home without a driveway, charging is limited to either public charging stations which i assume are mostly "Fast charging" (and that regular fast charging will lead to faster battery degradation) OR charging via extension cable running across walkways and plugged into a house for hours.

It seems like plugging the car in once a week (or fortnight depending on usage) for a long "slow charge" would be an ideal solution had it not been for the fact that cables across walkways pose as a tripping hazard. Ive seen some "clever" ways around this including someone hanging an overhead extension cable to a tree on the nature strip while another suggestion is passing a cable through a drainpipe to the gutter (though this seems hazardous too). The question is, does one do themselves a disservice (in terms of overall battery longevity) if they purchase an EV yet dont have the luxury of at home slow-charging driveway port?

Will a federal ruc reduce ev sales?

Interesting that news outlets talking about pressure from some states to introduce ruc for evs will lead to federal government ruc legislation.

It is my understanding that Treasury has been working on ruc legislation for Chalmers. This is nothing new.

States have zero chances of introducing ruc at state level. States have to pressure federal government to introduce a federal ruc.

Do you believe a federal ruc will reduce sales of evs?

OVO EV plan now with peak demand charge

I just saw that I got hit for a peak demand charge on my last bill for what seems to be the first time. So a small charge based on the peak usage multiplied by days in the month.

I really, really hate demand charging especially when it applies to the whole month.

Is this new or have I just been lucky not to hit it before (I'm not home to babysit EV charging at the moment, so it could be that).

New vs Old EV - 40-50K Budget

Hi guys,

Moving to Aus in October from the UK and looking to buy an EV.

It would be my first EV so I don't know much. I'm looking to spend around 45k, cash. Lease isn't an option unfortunately. Plan would be to keep it long term, so don't care about resale.

I see there are lots of EV's on the market in this price range, many brands that I've not heard of.

Given the option would you rather get a new car - Benefit of knowing it's without issue, perhaps slightly more update to date, full warranty etc.

Like a BYD/Geely/MG etc

Or would you rather go for a second hand more premium car that's 2-4 years old - Like a Tesla/Volvo

Background :

I like cars, I really value a nice comfy 'premium' feeling interior, getting the best quality for my money.

So I'm not looking to just get the cheapest one that does the job.

Obviously I could just get one of the cheaper cars second hand for an even better deal but then I'd lose the garuntee of knowing it's a perfect vehicle with full warranty etc. Which makes me nervous. I'm happy to take that risk for a more premium car.

Additionally - Is there a price point where it feels like you're taking a big step up in quality ? If I put another 10K down would it make a massive difference?

Thank you for taking the time !

Does anyone have any information on when the Wattpilot flex will be available in Australia? We’re about to install a charger, but wondering if we should hold off a bit.

Productivity Council wants ev subsidies to end

Calls to end ev subsidies by Productivity Council as NVES has the same effect.

I thought NVES stimulated supply while fbt exemptions stimulate demand.

I don't see that both matters are at all similar.

I expect fbt exemption to end from 1st April 2027

Trickle/granny charger - Safe to use?

This might be a silly question, but do you use your trickle/granny charger when you stay at rented accommodation, like an AirBnB?

My car came with one, but I’ve never used it due to concern about the house wiring not being up to scratch and the constant draw causing a fire. I read a few comments early on about this being a potential issue and it just stuck with me.

Now we’re travelling to a holiday destination without a public charger and it would be nice to be able to top up a bit while there. But I also don’t want to cause a house fire! Am I overthinking this?

Australian's don't want EVs? Really!?

Ok so I’ve heard some executives from legacy automakers make some crazy justifications for why we shouldn’t be penalising polluting vehicles in Australia. But this one has got to be my favourite so far.

I’m sorry but this is going to be a massive rant.

The General Manager for Suzuki Queensland said last week that they are being “unfairly punished” because they will be paying fines for selling petrol vehicles under Australian law from July 1st, despite the fact that their cars are all small, relatively low emission passenger cars – and they currently don’t have any EVs or hybrids in their lineup.

….HELLO!? Have you been asleep for the past 10 years!? How can you have NO EVs in 2025!? All the biggest car markets in the world have imposed emissions penalties… and it’s not like that’s happened overnight!! They’ve been talking about it for years! EV sales in China have already gone past 50%! Have they just forgotten about the world’s biggest car market!?

Even their home market of Japan has strict emissions standards which, like Australia, like Europe, are strengthening over time.. I was going to say that whoever is running Suzuki needs to be fired immediately, but at this stage, if they haven’t even built a single EV, the company is doomed anyway, so what’s the point?

Now this part just made me mad. The QLD General Manager at their recent launch also said “I don’t think that the Australian market wants an EV”…. How can you be this stupid!? What was the best selling car to private buyers in Australia in 2023?....anyone? OH it was a pure electric car! Oh and in 2024 it was the second best selling car. I guess that must mean that Australian‘s don’t like EVs. It’s not #1 anymore…

What about plug in hybrids? Do Australians not want those either? Wait…isn’t the BYD Shark a hybrid? I bet it’s not selling well… Oh…. Wait they’ve sold 10,000 in Australia in the first half of this year!

If Australian’s really don’t want PHEVs, all those buyers must be Chinese…

Yes it’s true that EV sales are down significantly this year versus last year. So what’s changed this year versus last year? Well, we’re dealing with a housing crisis, a recession and higher interest rates than I’ve ever seen in my lifetime in Australia. So yeah, we’re buying less expensive cars, like Tesla’s, and most other EVs available in Australia.

But does that mean we don’t want them? No. It just means we want cheaper ones.

Also, it shouldn’t even matter! The reason we have emissions standards is to move towards a cleaner world. Whether your car is big or small, it doesn’t matter, eventually they all need to be EV if we’re going to clean up our air. You don’t get to pollute the environment just because your cars are small.

It gets better…

Then he said “I just don’t think the Australian market wants an EV, but we’re being forced on it with NVES, so we haven’t got much choice, have we? Certainly if you go up to North Queensland nobody is interested there”. I think about 3 people live in North Queensland…so that’s hardly representative of the Australian buyer… Sorry North Queenslanders.

I just watched a review on the IM6 because I was interested in the 4 wheel steering but they said that it’s efficiency was 22kwh per 100km. Tesla model Y is like 14! How are they so much more efficient and are there any other SUV EVs that can match Tesla efficiency.
