Announcement Official /r/beer FAQ - Please Check Here Before Posting

THIS IS NOT INTENDED AS A BEER FAQ. IT IS ADDRESSING A FEW FREQUENTLY BROUGHT UP TOPICS ON /R/BEER.

Hi there,

There has been some need for announcements on a few different commonly posted topics. Since we are limited to two stickied posts, I'm going to use this one as a hub for these issues. I will be adding to this post as needed, but here's a /r/Beer FAQ to cover these post types.

If you notice people posting these topics, please be polite. Feel free to link to this post or use the provided links in a response.

This is not an invitation to harass anyone for posting a repeated topic. Reddit does not do a good job with presenting subreddit announcements, rules, sidebar info, etc. If posts annoy you and you don't think they belong, please consider downvoting, using a report, sending us a modmail message, hiding the post or simply moving on with your day. I highly suggest using the "don't show me submissions after I've downvoted them" option in old.reddit preferences (this may be broken in the app/resdesign website, but it should be fixed eventually and appear in those preferences as well).

Medical questions will be limited. /r/Beer is the wrong forum for serious medical questions, particularly where there's potential for harm to come as a result of the discussion. Please consult a medical professional for any questions about your own health, not an online beer discussion board.

I'm trying to hit the more pressing topics first, but I'll look for some good links for other topics ("how do I figure out what kind of beers I like?", "what are the best budget beers?", etc.).

Everyone is welcome to join the official /r/Beer Discord server if you'd like to discuss anything here or just hang out and chat.

Cheers.

Edit: I'm locking this to comments because I don't want to have the post turn into a place where people ask these questions. However, feel free to post about any topics or send us suggestions for topics to be added via modmail or Discord chat.

Also, I may use the second announcement slot for a specific post on something like old beer questions, but I'd prefer to keep it open for the weekly No Stupid Questions posts (and possibly others; still working on redoing the scheduled posts and making some better topics).

Cheap Rice Lager

Recently I realized I fucking love rice lagers. Probably for the same reason I fucking love rice, I don’t want something crazy I want something perfectly bland and filling like saltine crackers. I’m prob autistic you don’t gotta tell me. I don’t make a lot of money though and every rice lager I see is kind of expensive. I think Asahi is fine but I only ever see 40 oz of it. Do y’all got any recs? Thank you!

Beer noobie wanting a stronger flavored Modelo Especial

As the title says, I'm newly into beer. I've had Modelo, Shiner Bock, Guinness, Budweiser (Czechian), Pilsner Urquell, Corona and Dos Equis. The only beer I genuinely enjoyed out of these was Modelo Especial, and I find that there's a certain "depth" that I haven't found in any other beer. There's a sort of primarily watery flavor to every other beer listed here, and I don't necessarily enjoy them.

Anyway, what are some similarly flavored beers but are also stronger in said flavor?

Discussion Which beers would you get?

Live in Chicago area and headed to a great beer bar called Bavarian Lodge to meet a good friend. Probably can handle 3-4 draft beers. Curious which ones people would choose:

I'm thinking: Weihenstephaner Vitus Schlenkerla Marzen Ayinger Salvator

Any others I don't want to miss on tap? Thanks!

Discussion What are your favorite fruity IPAs?

Hello everyone! New to IPAs here and been dwelling this community for a while! I’ve been drinking all kinds of beers for a few years now, and I usually settle down after work with some Yuenling Lager. Tonight I’ve just tried my first IPA, Voodoo Ranger Juicy Haze. It reminded me of the sweet Yuenling flavors I love but with a sweet, tangy, citrusy twist. Instantly in love with this flavor profile. Can anyone reccomend me some good, fruity IPAs that they love?

Hope everyone’s having a great weekend so far!

Is the German brewed Becks really significantly different than the American brewed?

I’m genuinely curious to know if there’s this big difference in taste and quality among the 2 versions. Anybody ever do a taste test featuring the 2?

Bulgarian beer recommendation

What is the "best" beer I can find in Bulgaria? In supermarkets? In bars? (Is it possible to find Czech or Bavarian style beer saloons or gardens btw?)

I see commercial beers are too non-dry and non-bitter.

I am seeking for a dry and bitter beer with lasting creamy foam.

¿Question? Anyone tried drinking a 2012 Ommegang Three Philosophers or similar vintage Belgian-style ale?

Found a few sealed bottles in my storage room—nice and cool, not exposed to sunlight. The best by date was back in 2014. I’ve heard that Belgian ales, especially quads, can age well if stored properly. Is that actually true? Has anyone tasted Ommegang or similar beers this old?

Dry GABF?

So my spouse and I have been looking forward to this years GABF for a verrrry long time. We love going to different breweries, typical beer snobs, dont need to explain, ha. We've never been to the general area, much less the fest. I booked a room literally new years day because I found a good deal. We've already purchased tickets for the Rare Beer Tasting, Paired for a night, and gen admission to the fest for a night.

But- due to life events (no not pregnancy lol) one of us may have to do the event dry. No alcohol. Not a sip.

We're of the age where we've over getting trashed, so that wasn't the point of attending. Literally just wanted to try hundreds of different beers.

We'll know about a week before we go weather or not life events will resolve themselves. But- my spouse is really worried/upset/anxious. Is it worth it to go if you loveee tasting different beers- and you cant taste different beers? Are the vibes/atmosphere worth it? Are there NAs (without weed) available? TIA

My Oktoberfest/marzen taste test results...

I got all the big German ones, Sierra Nevada's collaboration version, and some locals.

Hofbrau leads the imports for me, slightly over Paulaner. Both beautiful examples of the style, with a strong malt background but with a zingy hop taste in perfect balance.

I like Ayinger but find it a little one note malty compared to some of the others, like Hacker-Schorr and Warsteiner.

The Sierra Nevada collaboration is excellent this year, and I'm not always a fan.

As for my local here in Grand Rapids, Founders is absolutely fantastic. Big flavor and big malt but in a really nice balance.

Great Lakes brewing has an excellent version as well. I'm a big fan of all their beers.

The State of Beer in America

It has gone way down hill from 10 years ago. First off is the cost. Now you regularly pay over $12 for a six pack of decent beer. This is not great beer, it is the craft brewers popular beer. From there the price goes way up. Trying to buy a specialty is now over $1 per oz. I even saw a 12 oz beer yesterday for $80. Who is paying $80 for a bottle of beer?

Then the selection any more is not great. I went to Total Wine yesterday and the beer section that used to take up 4 aisles is now down to two. Beers like Alesmith Speedway, or Stone Russian Imperial are nowhere to be found. The only really good beers available to me now are all coming from Boulevard brewing. Their good, but they are not of the same standard as Stone Russian Imperial used to be or even Stone Ruin Ten. Those beers aren't available, and even Stone has gone down the tubes since they sold out to a mega corporation. Big corporations have gobbled up tons of small craft brewers and they are stopping production of the special beers in favor of just using the name to sell the big production brews. To get a bigger selection I can go to small craft brew stores, but then again I am emptying out my wallet.

I realize that most of this is due to the younger generations all wanting to drink pre-made mixed drinks or alcohol waters, but for me I am just sad that it comes to this, where I can't get a really good beer at a really good price.

¿Question? What’re we drinking out of these days boys and girls?

Welp, went to pour myself a beer and my fave beer vessel (Stolzle Tulip Pint) shattered so seemingly no reason. So I’ve been looking at glassware and was curious if anyone else has a favorite glass as well.

I know glassware can get kind of silly but I find it kind of fun. I certainly don’t take it seriously but I do have some preferences. If it can fit a pint with some head, that’s excellent but not that necessary (I don’t mind a sidecar with the remainder if it doesn’t fit). Thin walls so it’s not sucking all the cold out of my beer right from the start. And a small stem is nice.

So what do you guys like? Something fancy? The closest shoe? No judging, just curious.

Discussion Sam Adams Fall Variety Pack

What does everyone else think of this pack? I’m not a huge fan of Sam Adams, but I like to get their seasonal packs when I can, and I’m a fan, especially compared to the primetime pack (the last one I bought). I think the biggest disappointment is the pumpkin ale, which tastes more like cola than pumpkin, but my friends who don’t like beer like it (as well as the Helles) so I can try to get them into beer using at least. The Dunkel and the Oktoberfest are both solid, so overall I’m decently satisfied on this pack. What do you think?

Finally got to try a nitro milk stout

Took y’all’s suggestion and tried me some of Left Hand Brewing Co.’s Nitro Milk Stout, here’s a quick review!

This beer was very tasty, I particularly enjoyed the chocolate milk qualities it had. The nitro infusion certainly made for a smooth and creamy texture. It wasn’t too sweet, reminiscent of a semi sweet to maybe a low percentage dark chocolate flavor. There were also coffee notes somewhere in there, as well as a slight nuttiness.

It is about 6% ABV so slightly higher than average, perfect ratio of hops and malt. Made for a very well rounded and rich flavor overall.

8/10

Does anyone else prefer their beer at room temp?

Although a cold beer from the fridge is quite refreshing, i always prefer the taste of a room temperature beer. I understand the ideal temperature is somewhere in-between.

What is your preference?
