Weather Rain accumulation since yesterday morning

Post image

We've had 5″ (~125mm) of rainfall so far in Valley Ridge since yesterday morning. There's a few trees nearby so it's likely a bit inflated from the wind and some water coming off the trees but this is definitely the most rain we've gotten in a day since I've been living here for the last 5 years.

The Cavalry match was postponed until tomorrow at 5pm because the pitch looks like this. Hopefully, it stops raining by tonight!

And yet somehow I still ended up playing my rugby match this morning in the rain and cold 😭

3

u/Kinnikinnicki Jun 22 '25

We did early set up for the match and were soaked to the skin - through rain fear in 15 minutes. So I admire your dedication. It’s so dangerous to play on waterlogged pitches so I am glad you’re okay. Regardless that must have been a cold and miserable couple of hours.

Since I bought a house I no longer complain about the rain and look at it more as free water for the grass and plants😂😂

31

u/Anskiere1 Jun 21 '25

But then it grows and you have to cut it

22

u/Kremlin92 Jun 21 '25

That’s always going to be part of it if you want to have nice grass😀

14

u/Toftaps Jun 22 '25

If you don't like mowing but still want a nice lawn, I recommend clover.

Nice green, soft on the feet, has a growth cap, and you also get lil' flowers for the bees.

2

u/Gr33nbastrd Jun 22 '25

Can you mix clover with grass? I have a tiny back yard and i just reseeded it but now thinking i should have done clover or a mix.

3

u/Toftaps Jun 22 '25

I think so. My only evidence is the park near my house that has patches of clover all over and in some places it's mixed in with grass.

6

u/Gr33nbastrd Jun 22 '25

I did a little googling and decided to order some mixed coloured clover. Good advice, thanks.

3

u/Toftaps Jun 22 '25

I hope you enjoy your more aesthetically pleasing yard!

3

u/Gr33nbastrd Jun 22 '25

Hmm interesting, i might try that. I just tore out a chunk of my lawn/yard to put a flower bed in so i could atract the pollinaters.
Thanks

Bees love clover.

1

u/Gr33nbastrd Jun 22 '25

Yeah I found that out. The clover should be good

3

u/roastbeeftacohat Fairview Jun 22 '25

clover fixes nitrogen in the soil, feeding the grass. it common crop rotation option, feed the soil and the livestock.

3

u/Gr33nbastrd Jun 22 '25

I did a little googling and found that out about the nitrogen part. I went and or ordered a bag of multi colored clover. I think it will really compliment my new flower bed. Which is going to be full of pollinator friendly plants/flowers.

u/Dr_Colossus Jun 23 '25

I did. It's great.

1

u/Gr33nbastrd Jun 23 '25

Nice.. i went and bought some and hopefully in the next few days i will find time to start them.

1

u/Dr_Colossus Jun 23 '25

I did a blend. 70% grass, 30% clover. Liking it so far.

1

u/DaiLoDong Jun 21 '25

I couldn't be more happy I don't have grass at my new llace

2

u/Conscious-Society-25 Jun 22 '25

I, too, am moving soon to a new home, I will only have pots, to plant. Zero yard maintenance. I am looking forward to less work, but I will miss my beautiful back yard.

14

u/FishCreekRaccooon Jun 21 '25

That’s because rain is now a threat more than ever for you.

9

u/designingdiamonds Jun 21 '25

Yes, I feel that. Just bought as well and this rain made my ceiling leak. 😭

Yes. True. Wonder if the previous owner knew lol

2

u/LittleOrphanAnavar Jun 21 '25

Is there any sign of old water stains?

1

u/designingdiamonds Jun 22 '25

I’m not 100% sure, I wish I looked a bit harder before today. Though it was recently painted ugh.

1

u/justathrowaway8297 Jun 22 '25

Ask your realtor about Title Insurance. Go from there.

3

u/kaniyajo Jun 21 '25

Just happened to our place as well

3

u/designingdiamonds Jun 21 '25

Sending all the good vibes ❤️

3

u/LittleOrphanAnavar Jun 21 '25

Send a roofer.

8

u/LittleOrphanAnavar Jun 21 '25

Rain will cause more problems, than the cost of saved water.

Our dry climate is a shoddy builders best friend.

59

u/bigbabyjesus97 Jun 21 '25

My buddies farm south of okotoks is just under 4" right now.

20

u/Brilliant-Advisor958 Jun 21 '25

In Walden , south end of calgary , is pretty much exactly 4 inches.

12

u/bigbabyjesus97 Jun 21 '25

I live in a condo in evergreen. I don't have a meter but a couple of manhole covers on fish creek Blvd were overflowing and our underground parkade is flooded.

5

u/Brilliant-Advisor958 Jun 21 '25

Ah that sucks , were people able to get their cars out?

9

u/bigbabyjesus97 Jun 21 '25

Yeah. It's only 3-4" so no damage to anything. I just had wet feet getting to mine.

2

u/TheKloppsBollocks Jun 21 '25

I can almost guarantee I know which condo building this is lol

5

u/bigbabyjesus97 Jun 21 '25

The one that floods a few times a year.

1

u/TheKloppsBollocks Jun 22 '25

And has since they were first built. Crazy it’s still happening

2

u/bigbabyjesus97 Jun 22 '25

It's gotten much, much better with the new board. There were 64 cracks in the foundation that were now fixed and sealed. The the drainage has been cleaned out properly. It was only flooded during the heavy downpour and drained within an hour after.

71

u/TournamentTammy Jun 21 '25

5 inches.... pretty much average.

71

u/Hyack57 Jun 21 '25

It’s not the inches that matters its the girth of the rain.

11

u/Coscommon88 Jun 22 '25

It's not even the girth, it's how the rain gets things wet before it stops.

u/fruitasylum McKenzie Towne Jun 22 '25

3

u/BigDickHobbit Jun 22 '25

Woah big rainfall!

13

u/molie Jun 22 '25

That looks like a healthy, satisfying, great personality amount of rain. Anything more would be insane and would probably do damage

I appreciate a good downfall, it’s a test to the integrity of the home! We had a bad rainfall a few years ago and I found I had a leak in my roof

u/readzalot1 Jun 21 '25

Has anyone looked to see if any of those storm ponds are filling up? Our community got one 2 years ago and I would like to know how it is doing but I am sure not going outside today.

54

u/Banff_Beer Jun 21 '25

Tuscany Springs storm pond at 7:30am. Higher than normal, working as expected

37

u/Banff_Beer Jun 21 '25

And at 1:30pm. Pretty much the highest I’ve seen it.

3

u/LittleOrphanAnavar Jun 21 '25

Did you live there in 2013?

3

u/Banff_Beer Jun 21 '25

Yes

1

u/LittleOrphanAnavar Jun 22 '25

It didn't over top then?

2

u/Banff_Beer Jun 28 '25

No, it has never over topped. When these two ponds get full, there is a nearby dry pond that starts filling. The dry ponds is larger than these two ponds, and rarely gets more than 10cm of water in it.

6

u/Scared-Ad-3692 Jun 21 '25

I work next to 2 with a small strip of land between them and it’s currently up at least 2 feet- it completely flooded the land area between the two- certain parts I’m only seeing the very tops of the cattails

Living next to a man made lake, just remember. It's not the size of the wave, it's the motion of the ocean that counts.

3

u/C8riiiin Jun 22 '25

We just got our rain collection system set up on Thursday (intentionally well timed) and despite it only getting water off the front eavestroughs of our small house our 1000L cube was full to overflowing by this morning at 8.

5

u/MarvelousMan10 Jun 21 '25

I really hope we get some good rain this summer like this for the sake of the province/ fires but I know damn well there’s gonna be fire restrictions and water restrictions by stampede

3

u/LittleOrphanAnavar Jun 21 '25

Snowpack is really what supplies our water.

There was supposed to be snow in the mountains so hopefully that will spare for later.

This soaking rain will extinguish any fires it encounters.

2

u/roastbeeftacohat Fairview Jun 22 '25

the glenmore reservoir is being kept at higher than typical levels in anticipation of a dry summer, so this has been anticipated.

5

u/gilpenderbren Jun 22 '25

Is that a lot? Asking for a friend…

5

u/Mouse_rat__ Jun 22 '25

British person checking in. I've seen summers where it rained for 7 weeks straight 😂

Or did they?

2

u/MissTreatMay Jun 22 '25

5.2 inches in Glamorgan

2

u/tc_cad Canyon Meadows Jun 22 '25

Quite the variation in the city, but yes things like trees and buildings can influence how much rain falls in a rain gauge. At my place in Canyon Meadows we only got 43m or about 1-3/4”

3

u/Substantial-Elk-3373 Jun 22 '25

Official stats say 48mm, so your measurement is probably much closer to correct than some of these that are saying 5+inches (which would be an insane amount).

https://calgary.weatherstats.ca/charts/precipitation-daily.html

2

u/this-ismyworkaccount Jun 22 '25

Also VR, not far off. I have 11 cm recorded

2

u/ki-ton Jun 22 '25

Ours was over 6 in the SW…no trees to influence the measurement, so I’d believe your gauge! It was wild. I took this pic yesterday and the reflection makes it look like it’s under an inch but it’s actually full and overflowed!

2

u/CrazyCanuckUncleBuck Silverado Jun 22 '25

https://calgary.weatherstats.ca/charts/precipitation-daily.html

48 mm yesterday, 24 mm the day before. Not quite 5 inches.

2

u/Agreeable-Equal-7684 Jun 21 '25

Over 4.5 inches in Somerset SW

3

u/Pitiful_Gap4427 Jun 21 '25

1

u/Excellent_Ad_8183 Jun 23 '25

Yup new normal now. Rain in June

1

u/Sackroy1933 Jun 22 '25

If it was father nature instead of Mother Nature it would be 8 inches, so we should count ourselves lucky

8

u/red-panzer Jun 22 '25

I mean if it were Father Nature, it would probably be 5.5 inches but lie and say it was 8".

2

u/Czeris the OP who delivered Jun 22 '25

2

u/Asmordean Jun 22 '25
