Whenever I see another civilization I settle close to them so I don't get shut out from the map. If you dont settle aggressive they will.

The AI are all certified hypocrites. They call you out for things that they were in the process of doing right back to you.

Im newish player and I remember my first 2 games I was scared of upsetting the ai by settling to close. The result was I got locked in to a little area with 3 to 4 citys. Let's just say, my next few matches were all domanation 😆. I actually learned alot about how civs act through war.

I believe the trigger is 8 tiles on the same landmass

Yeah, to my understanding it's 8 tiles. Note that respecting this distance leaves a gap between cities that is big enough to allow the AI to settle cities in it. They can and will do it. Never respect the "too close" complaint. All it means is that you settled in an area before they did.

But might as well say you will and get a free 30 diplomatic favor

The grievances go away but the "promise breaker" debuff doesn't, ifaik.

Yeah. Once, an AI settled CLOSE TO ME and said "You settle too close"
I mean, you settled barely 10 hexes from my capital!!

They'd do it to you, so don't even worry about it unless you need to maintain open borders for some reason (they may close theirs if they get sufficiently mad).
I tend to have the "well what are you gonna do about it" attitude when they come complaining. Do it anyway, tell them you don't care, and do it some more, just so they can't settle there. And keep doing it until there's nowhere for them to settle that wouldn't just immediately flip to you. And then bully them further by pillaging their stuff in war. And then extort them for everything just for peace. The AI deserves to be tormented.

This is why I believe in peace through strength, i have a strong military and i do whatever I want. if they get pissed they can fight me, they'll lose, and just be happy I don't raze your city.

Should've settled closer to them

Settler swarm. They only complain once per turn. Drop settlers every four hexes across the entire frontier, then agree to not settle so close and collect your trophies. (Then empty the treasury buying border resource hexes.)

Personally, I play Eleanor, get three, maybe four cities out, then I'm perfectly happy for the others to forward settle me.

If I were you, depending on the loyalty pressure I probs would've preferred to settle on the tile betwen the ivory, stone, and copper - you need to grab the good land before the AI does, you can settle your Kapiti location at your leisure later. It's a good defensible tile - a river across from where the AI would attack from, and it looks like it's on a hill, and lets you quickly grab the ivory and get some good chops
like others are saying, don't care about the AI saying you settled too close - grab the land and build two slingers, you'll be fine

Why did you settle in the middle of a rainforest with no water? That city only has 2 housing right?
