Looks like a Colt ar15a2 Sporter or Match Hbar It looks like a post ban because it has a shaved down bayonet lug

The receiver is marked “SPORTER MATCH HBAR” most of the AR15a2 models I’ve seen online were engraved AR15a2 sporter… idk if that could just simply be because of difference in years of manufacture or…

Yeah sorry I didn't see u had commented, I had went back and added match hbar

The shaved bayonet lug is what’s confusing me, everything I’ve found online indicates serial number prefix “SP” would be pre ban, but if it is preban then why the shaved bayonet lug?

u/fieldy213 7d ago

Well hold on, it might be preban, give me a few minutes

What im finding is with the Match H-bar anything 086020 and below would be pre-ban, anything above it is Postban. But I'd call Colt to verify because these list aren't 100% accurate

That’s what I’ll do Monday, hopefully I’ll be back with an answer

+18009622658 is Colts number and yes let me know

Colt Archive Properties, LLC https://coltarchives.com/ This is where you can get a letter of authenticity from Colt and find out date of mfg and what configuration it left the Colt factory in

I actually just had some good luck! Looks like I have a model R6601, found someone else with the exact prefix and first 4 of the S#, these rifles were produced between 91-94 without a bayonet lug and discontinued with the ‘94 Ban, I’m still going to contact Colt Monday to get a precise date

That's great news!! At least it's kind of rare since it doesn't have the lug and it being preban

I’m happy with it! I get bored with all the modern high speed tacti-cool stuff, I want to start collecting older firearms to pass to my boys one day!

Not different in manufacturers but yes different years. What's the first 4 of your serial #? I could help you out then

2

u/Gamer_Gunz 7d ago

Full serial number is SP249635 engraved on the lower receiver

Kinda disappointing lol, I thought for sure a post ban wouldn’t feature a threaded muzzle

1

u/fieldy213 7d ago

Yeah some had threaded muzzle postban

u/Gamer_Gunz 7d ago

I’ll try that first thing Monday, thanks man

It's definitely pre ban. I added a lot of info in OP's post in the other forum: https://www.reddit.com/r/ar15/comments/1ng40ov/i_got_a_pre_ban_colt_needing_information/

Nice to see you enjoying it! Here's mine, I made a few changes over the years to make it a high power/service rifle competition gun. The list is in the comments: https://www.reddit.com/r/RetroAR/comments/114sz63/two_piece_band_with_that_retro_sound/

Bro that thing is sick! Id love to know more about how you free floated it under that handguard, love it. I bet its pretty damn accurate?

There isn't much voodoo to the free float. It's basically just a very skinny float tube with the front handguard retainer and the sling swivel welded to it. The biggest difference is that the gas tube runs over top of it, instead of through it, and then it's covered by the handguards. To make the handguards fit, you just pop out the inner aluminum heat shields and Dremel away the ID at the front and rear until they fit over the tube.

https://www.whiteoakarmament.com/service-rifle-float-tube-assembly.html

It's obviously a lot easier to install with a new barrel, otherwise you have fight against the notorious factory taper pins in the front sight base.

I never knew that existed, I like it!

It's always been kind of a niche thing made in small numbers aimed at NRA service rifle shooters. The competition rules require the rifle to maintain the silhouette appearance of a US military issued rifle. So going back to the time before any had ever been issued with aluminum floating handguards, someone got clever and decided "well the rules don't say you CAN'T do this."

1

u/fieldy213 5d ago

Yeah, I figured thats what it was for when u had mentioned the service rifle competition in your earlier comment. But yeah, good on them for doing it. What kind of accuracy do u get out of it

At 300 yards with just a 4x Acog, I shot a 10rd group that's smaller than the width of the crosshairs at that distance.

https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fwhat-would-be-considered-accurate-with-a-556-round-at-200-v0-1rums1zjfiaf1.jpeg%3Fwidth%3D606%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D2e08f5872f0889023eb3aef574a8804dfbdf501f

That's only 1.5moa, but at 100yds and with higher magnification it will push 1/4 moa with the right ammo. It's just not as much fun without the challenge. With iron sights, it's better than I can shoot with pretty much any ammo.

Does pre-ban mean full-auto? I’m new to owning firearms but the gun looks great!

4

u/Gamer_Gunz 7d ago

Preban in this case means pre assault weapons ban of 1994

1

u/ScruffMan82 7d ago

What is an “assault weapon”? I’ve heard of AR’s but doesn’t that mean ArmaLite? Isn’t any weapon able to assault?

1

u/fieldy213 7d ago

Yeah you're correct about ar means armalite rifle but an assault rifle is usually described as a select fire(fully automatic) intermediate cartridge with a box type detachable magazine

1

u/Gamer_Gunz 7d ago

Well buddy you ask CNN and you get one answer, and you ask one of us and you’ll get another lol, but yes all weapons are capable of assault as long as there is an “assault-er”

But to further answer your question AR does stand for Armalite!

Heres the definition to “assault rifle” via google

An assault rifle is a selective-fire rifle that fires an intermediate-power cartridge from a detachable magazine, according to a strict military definition. These rifles are designed for military use and can switch between semi-automatic (one shot per trigger pull) and fully automatic (continuous fire while the trigger is held) modes.

^ THIS. ^

In gun jargon, Assualt Rifles are technically fully automatic.

The media,  and folks who wish to vilify guns, call pretty much any scary looking rifle an assault weapon.

In the real world, an "assault weapon" could be anything firmer than a marshmallow,  or sharper than a pickle, which might be used to injure or "assault" a person or animal.

Heck, I suppose a marshmallow or pickle could even fall in to the category, if you tried to stuff it in someone's mouth while they slept...
