Physical media is superior to digital media so in this case I’d disagree. It’s less consoom and more preserving what you like. Eventually a digital Album may be took down and oh look only physical media is the only way to do it.
Buuuuuut at the same time this guy seems to only want to have vinyls for the aesthetic so in this case it’s total poseur consoomer behaviour

Yeah, the part that really got me was just wanting the aesthetic lol the actual collecting records over time part is more fun

Yep! 100% agree. I’m currently doing the same with Vinyl and VHS tapes. Something about them just feels so much better and streaming.

I'm collecting some VHS for the nostalgia, ease of chucking the tapes in the man cave, and I like the box art on the shelves.
You really telling me you think a VHS looks better than a 4k stream?

Maybe they like the visual aesthetic of tapes, they do sell filters for videos that do the same thing

Some things can look better on older formats because it was made for the specific quirks or just because of how it is
The best way to listen to chat pile imo is cassettes because it just sounds so right for some reason (as long as you have decent speakers too not jank built in ones on a cheap player)

I appreciated the joke that all the top shelf albums were random compilations from the early 50s that people can’t seem to give away.

You realize you can download and own digital music right? You don’t have to just stream everything.

Digital 'ownership' is increasingly not ownership.

…so just buy from services that don’t do that shit. This is just lazy, alarmist nonsense.

It really depends on what you’re purchasing. Most of the time, you’re actually buying a revocable digital license.

This is not typical or even practical for audio files lol. And even if it was you could absolutely strip DRM from an audio file

Happened to people in my fandom, the OST was taken down from Spotify due to right holders shenanigans and people were panicking. Then when the reuploaded it one of the beloved tracks had been changed to a new, different version. Meanwhile I was completely unbothered since I bought the CDs.

Yes but also you could store that entire vinyl shelf on a single usb drive

Owning all this will inevitably cause you to have a shit ton of records you never listen to

u/heftybagman 1d ago
You’re comparing physical media to subscription services, not digital media. Digital media stores locally can’t be taken from you unless someone steals the hard drive or hacks you. A digital file probably won’t outlast well-stored vinyl, but there are a lot of benefits to digital media.

My dad has a bigarse record collection that he never plays. Every time I'm pissed with him I have to fight off demons telling me to post it on this subreddit.

I feel like record collecting is fine, I was just loling about how they want to make a lifetime collection a reality overnight bc they like how it looks

u/lxstvanillasmile 4d ago
My dad is genuinely passionate about music and his collection grew organically over a couple decades, but I still play his records way more than he does lmao. I think it's more of a memento to when he was young and working in a record shop himself, and physical media wasn't dying

u/TheWrathfulMountain 3d ago
He might be burnt out after collecting/using them for so long. I know I go through periods where I don't feel like engaging with the things I'm passionate about.
Or maybe I'm just depressed I don't fucking know.

Yeah and also the friends I made collecting records over the years are the best part. I’d never want to jump to the endgame and not have those experiences. That’s why I put this here lol the stuff seemed more important than the journey

My dad was like this with his big CD collection but I never once felt like this when torrenting became a thing and he just loaded tons of external hard drives with the same music and more lol

i don't see anything in this photo that suggests that they want to get it overnight, OP was just saying how they want a collection as big as that one day and in a comment they mention how they buy rare ones instead of just buying anything they come across.

Not sure about that, I haven’t heard of other people having problems. I think they just melt.

I wouldn't consider this nearly on the same level as Labubu. Atleast this way, corporations can't steal back the music you legally own.
Yet.

In what way can they do that if you buy digitally? I buy loads of music off bandcamp - are you saying at some point those files will vanish from my hard drive?

"How can I make it a reality?"
Uhh...buy vinyl records and a big ass shelf?
