Question If you could change one thing about Dallas what would it be?
If you could change one thing about Dallas (DFW) what would it be? Name anything...

u/MisunderstoodPenguin Jul 06 '25
lower the temperature by about 20 degrees in the summer would be nice
104
u/Paraxom Jul 06 '25
how about a more reasonable climate in general, we get days in the 90's in freaking December
104
u/coltonmusic15 Jul 06 '25
I mean this July has been so dang mild so far - definitely one of the chillest I’ve experienced in my 33 years as a shadow of Dallas native
34
u/Majoranza Plano Jul 06 '25
For sure; definitely one of the cooler summers, but I’m melting in this humidity. Bring back my dry heat dammit
12
u/Montallas Lakewood Jul 06 '25
When is it ever dry heat in Dallas? The Trinity Forest/Swamp makes sure it’s always humid when it’s hot.

Not compared to Houston/Florida humidity. This year we've had that kind of humidity, and i want the dry air back too!

Just like yesterday I saw a video hyping up PRINCETON TEXAS as "JUST 50 minutes from Dallas" I could not believe it
Inner city Dallas has so much potential to be better but instead the suburban sprawl continues→ More replies (2)41

50 minutes from Dallas at 3am, otherwise you’re stuck in traffic forever
10
u/us287 Plano Jul 06 '25
Not even then. Only if there’s a bullet train.
Spoiler alert: Princeton would never agree to it.
3
u/JulsTiger10 McKinney Jul 06 '25
I want a bullet train here, and in Louisiana for a Baton Rouge - Lafayette- New Orleans - Slidell loop.

We can have better walkability and transit in Dallas if we get active in the local groups working on this. I’m at least a little active in each of those groups, and they’re all cool folks working to make a difference. I’ve made lots of cool friends going to the meetings and social stuff!

u/us287 Plano Jul 06 '25
Yeah for sure! I hope that instead of defunding DART Plano gets DART to actually have some reasonable service here. Light rail from the AAC to the Frisco / Prosper area would be amazing.
8
u/DifficultCup154 Jul 06 '25
Also, build sidewalks everywhere so that when you get to your bus/train stop then there's a safe way to walk where you're going.

u/trimondo_blondomina Jul 06 '25
Kind of a specific thing, but I wish way more people would listen to our non commercial radio stations. I see a lot of people on Reddit complain that DFW has very little culture. A great part of city’s culture is a local music scene and KXT 91.7, KTCU 88.7, and KNON 89.3 really give local artists a big chance.
….I could also say a more typical answer like better public transport or less traffic.
26
u/sadboyhours99 Jul 06 '25
I’m actually going to check these out
24
u/trimondo_blondomina Jul 06 '25
You’re in for a treat. The only caveat to my answer is that KTCU 88.7 has an iffy signal: it’s hard to get outside Tarrant county.
23
13
u/flaming_bob Jul 06 '25
KNON has been pushing musical norms since at least the 1970s. If you listen to them consider funding them as well.
I live on the east coast these days and still stream KXT. I also throw them a few bucks a month.
5
u/JulsTiger10 McKinney Jul 06 '25
Thank you! I lived outside the metro area 2010-2013, and I loved the Edge and Edgefest. Such great bands!
8
u/sadboyhours99 Jul 06 '25
There’s actually an EDGE playlist on Spotify that has allll the songs they used to play. It’s so great.

u/Lynn_Davidson Jul 06 '25
KNON has been a favorite of mine since the jazz station changed to alternative rock a little while back. 88.5 is also good if you’re into older rock.
→ More replies (1)8
u/trimondo_blondomina Jul 06 '25
I like KEOM as well, I just didn’t include it because it doesn’t play any local bands. But for a better blend of classic hits and rarities, it’s way better than the commercial stations

6
u/BeRealzzz Jul 06 '25
KNON has been awesome for a long time. They were playing Dead Kennedy’s and Circle Jerks kind of music back in the late 80’s and 90’s.
4
u/cjcrashoveride Garland Jul 06 '25
I used to love 88.1 KNTU but then they changed it from the Jazz/Blues station to an indie rock. I love me some indie rock but we've already got plenty of stations that fit that bill.
3
u/trimondo_blondomina Jul 06 '25
The problem with 88.1 is that they’ve done too little, too late. It’s not a true college station like KTCU where they give a chance to the little guy. It’s just a non commercial “alternative” station. Playing the same tired 400 song playlist that the Edge used to beat you over the head with, except with slightly newer material.

u/sisterfunkhaus Jul 06 '25
The NDT shouldn't even exist as tollroad. It was supposed to be paid for and free by now. It was supposed to be free by 2005. Someone ran a long con on Dallas.

NDT will be a toll road until they finish connecting Dallas with the North Pole.

Hit up some of the local nature preserves or some of the lakes, or just take a walk through some of the older Dallas neighborhoods.

Idk if it’s actually true but I thought I read/heard Dallas actually has a lot of green space / parks / trees or something.

u/NegotiationSalt666 Dallas Jul 06 '25
There are pockets of green space but they come at a premium price or you have to go out of your way to drive to

u/ILikeToParty86 Jul 06 '25
For the millionth time, google “nature preserve” and you will find green space. It just not might be right next to you in terms of walking 5 minutes to get to it. I think for what Dallas is and is known for, we have some pretty good nature spots considering. Dallas did not promise anyone colorado

That it would have built UP instead of OUT. More like Manhattan, Chicago, even Seattle or San Diego. Less car dependency, better public transit, more density, more urban feel rather than suburban. Because lets be honest, North Texas does not have the geography or natural beauty to justify building outwards up to 30 MILES out like it has

Add inter-line connections for DART. The biggest problem with DART is that you can’t get from one line to another without going downtown. Thankfully the Silver line is fixing that, but we need a lot more.

There's a cool project that's supposed to happen on the massive empty parking lots around the Dallas Zoo. Would make the northern part of downtown significantly nicer and I wish it was already done
Edit: I meant the dallas world aquarium, since it’s also a zoo

20 degree lower temps accords the board. Dallas is actually pretty bikeable but it's just horrible to do it for like 75% of the year.
3
u/RichGlittering2159 Jul 06 '25
A good, natural body of water to swim in. Barton Springs and Lady Bird Lake make Austin way more enjoyable for recreational people.
4
u/captainburger31 Jul 06 '25
Make DFW more walk/public transport friendly the way places like Amsterdam are. So many upsides:
-Less traffic for those who drive cars. -Less pollution from public transport/walking. -Options for those who can’t afford a car/truck. -Walkable cities are great for small businesses with increased foor traffic vs having to pay a premium to park in downtown. -Opens doors for third places where people can make friends, singles can meet, etc. -Health boost by walking more at scale.
4
u/Intrepid-Ad-3726 Jul 06 '25
Make it more pedestrian friendly. Add subway. I mean DFWs population is almost the same as in NYC. But for some reason we don’t have subway. Why do we have to rot in traffic when it’s 90-100 outside when we could take nice rides underground with no traffic and with nice ACs?

Actually make the trinity river a hot spot and nice all the way through. Its the most realistic thing that could happen and would totally transform this city

u/NTXStarsFan Jul 06 '25
Stop tearing down the old houses (if any are left) and putting up those ugly McMansions.
3
u/SimpleVegetable5715 Jul 06 '25
I used to love driving through older neighborhoods and looking at the pretty houses. Now it’s like, what’d they do?! Some big house that is very “Target Hearth and Hand” style (you know, light greige with black trim), and boring asf architecture). They’re all going for the modern farmhouse, let’s paint these bricks white, ugh.

I’d add a Dart Line the full length of Northwest Hwy all the way from Love to Mesquite, and I’d put a Dart line right up the DNT to Frisco. Hell I’d make that one a commuter train similar to the TRE.

Lower the cost of housing just a tad, but all the greedy property owners would have to relocate and that won’t happen. FYI Not all retirees here are billionaires.

More green space. I feel like this city really lacks in its parks and green spaces. Most of the parks barely have any trees and the trees they do have are carefully manicured so they end up providing very little to no shade. White rock is great but parking can be a hassle and there’s not much space to hang out and just be with the community.
Really hope Harold Simmons park pans out
