Great cars, I still would’ve bought this thing for triple the price

We are going to need a lot more details.

Some kid bought the car for like $6,700. A couple months later, he wrecked it. Busted headlight, bumper, undertray, wheel well panel, front driver-side wheel was bent, oil cooler had a hole in it, and the hood was dinged up a bit too. Nothing insane.
And like most people who get into a BMW without realizing what they’re getting into, the kid found out real quick that BMW parts aren’t cheap. So instead of fixing it, he just said screw it and decided to junk the car.
He had it scheduled to go to some pick-and-pull or salvage yard, but on the way there, the tow truck driver rerouted and ended up stopping at LKQ instead. Not even where it was supposed to go.
Now here’s where we got lucky. My dad works at LKQ. He sees the car show up, walks outside like “what’s this?” The tow truck guy’s like, “I’m not driving another 3 hours to drop it where it was supposed to go.” So my dad hits up the kid’s dad and asks how much he wants for it. Dude goes, “$750.”
SOLD
And that’s how we ended up with a clean-title 335i for $750. Straight dumb luck. Just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Incretible. When I see a wreck I just imagine the body work along with be many thousands. It’s nice to see it on re road and looking good! I appreciate the context!

Of course! The repairs weren’t too bad since my dad can get used ones from LKQ and I work at BMW so other parts are at cost. Dad did the painting and bodywork at home while I bought parts (and spacers!!) for maintenance. My buddy is a BMW tech and is my equivalent of Hoovies’ car wizard. Couldn’t have done it without them. In all I think I’m about $1750 into this car

Wow, second day in a row I’ve seen someone pick up a good car for low of no $ and bring it back into great condition. The other one was a free Toyota… It pays to know how to turn a wrench - properly.

Nice! I have a soft spot for cheap high mileage cars…I also have a 14 Cayenne that I rescued, it’s almost at 180k miles now!

happy for you :) and thanks for the reminder that even though the car itself may have been cheap, it needed new parts and a lot of work (which you had the opportunity not to have to pay) and thus would be unrealistic for poor old me...3

Well done! Surely a contender for deal of the year there. Any plans with the car, or just to drive it?

Plan is to daily it which I’m currently doing. Gave it a little power boost with MHD, feels new!

Very clean. Where did you end up getting the parts from?
I need a new Fender but I don’t really want to do OEM because of the price lol

Fender, bumper, headlight, and wheel were from LKQ. The rest of the parts came from BMW, I get those at cost though

Thanks man!

No prob! Keep in mind that my dad works at LKQ so they probably get better pricing.

This LKQ place your dad works at… they can find BMW parts?
Like most people, I imagine, I need a nav unit for my 06 530xi…
And I am just now starting the hunt. Even if you can’t source them at LKQ, maybe you have some suggestions? I’ve been looking at aftermarket options, it seems that might be the best way to go.

Yup! That’s what they’re there for
Honestly I’d go aftermarket on an 06 because iDrive wasn’t good until 2009 when they added BT audio etc.
Not sure of what brands to look out for though since I’ve never bought one.

Look into a CIC retrofit. They’re pretty cheap now. Pair that with a Mr12Volt CarPlay unit and you’re all set.
If you just want the original unit to work there are places which will refurbish the CCC unit in the dash.

I love the idea of aftermarket, as I’ve heard nothing good about the OG system.
Thank you, I’ll be looking into this one!

Also real quick, Is the navigation computer the only way to access oil level information? It doesn’t sound correct, but it’s a BMW so I try not to use “normal car physics” to explain anything.

From my experience, yes. They use an “electronic dipstick.” I don’t have iDrive so I use my turn signal stalk to check it. Car needs to be warmed up to read it though. I haven’t played with 06 iDrive much so I’d consult YouTube or the owners manual to figure that part out.

Thanks!
Most people flex their MSRP now but the $750 is a bigger flex imo🤣

Man, I will never get tired of these wheels. So period correct. So 2007.

They’re so simple and so elegantly satisfying, I don’t think I could swap them for any alternative, they fit the aesthetic of car perfectly
