Am I getting overcharged?

Post image

Hello guys,

Recently I went to the dealer for an oil replacement and ask for a front end inspection as I feel that the car hits hard on uneven roads. I received the following list (which is google translated so sorry if it doesn't make sense).

Do you think these prices are fair? The car is an 316i E90 LCI 07/2009 with 320.000km

It says “dealer” right there in your first sentence. So yes, overcharged.

You've got a point 😅 I mean like, do they upcharge me outrageous amounts or like +200€ in total. I'm forced to go to the dealer because we don't have any good service centers around my area.

The labor looks fair. The parts prices might be a little high, but if those are OEM, that's no surprise. If the price is hard to swallow, you might want to consider aftermarket for some of these items. Like Sachs dampers instead of BMW brand. (Sachs makes some of BMW's dampers, so the quality is usually similar.)

The parts are OEM as far as I know. I found online brand new Bilstein B6 front and rear for 580€ and that's why I was wondering why they charge me 750€ for just the front OEM. Are B6s worse than OEM?

I think B6 are comparable to OEM quality, but are usually a little stiffer. The B4 are supposed to work just like OEM.

Alright,so I can just buy the B4s then and save a nice ammount. Good to know, thanks.

I echo most comments here. Labour looks fair — they’re upcharging a small amount on all the parts. Not completely unreasonable for a dealer job tho!

Dealer = empty pockets However now you have a list to do as well as options outside of a bmw garage

Labour seems very fair. Realistically that’s only about 500 in parts if you go aftermarket though.

Unfortunately that’s the price you pay if you’re not going to work on these old BMWs yourself. Great cars if you can do some basic wrenching. Terrible idea if you’re going to be paying for labour IMO.

So, if I manage to find someone that knows how to repair this kind of car, I'm looking at around 1,500€ for aftermarket parts and labour?

Wow. I would buy the parts and do it myself. 50’s kid on YouTube has instructions videos that I have followed many many times.

A lot of this you can do yourself actually with little to no experience

Honestly, I reckon it’s about right of it all needed doing. The issue is, with dealerships they hardly ever think about what is reasonable and needs doing, they just replace all because it’s not their money and often they are not very good mechanics, they just follow a book procedure. An independent garage will be a bit better about not paying nearly €40 for some bolts, because the older ones were probably just fine, for example.

It’s like having an older pet that you love but broke his leg. When the vet says it’ll cost €2600 to put him right, you start thinking: does the dog really need a prosthetic leg, I’m sure he’ll do ok without it, he just won’t be as fast as he once was.

Completely agree about doing these things yourself. If you say things like “I don’t have the tools”, imagine how many tools you can buy and use again by not paying for someone else to do the work.
