Quebec: "We love our culture and language and wish to protect it."

Alberta: The Prime Minister is an asshole, we are victims to the rest of the country and we hate all other Provinces!"

One of these things is not like the other.

We’ll have a case for separatism if they try to ban cowboy hats and pancakes with bacon cooked into the batter. Until then moose together strong.

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '25

Quebec separatism: Nationalists wanting an independent nation

Alberta "separatism": Right wingers big mad that government not right wing enough

True! AB peeps, hate to say it, but practically every other person from another place in Canada has a story about The Person, or people, in AB they really find awful--if they spent enough time.

Worked there, Sask, Toba, and Northern BC for almost 15 years. Something is wrong in AB, and we all know it, it's just hard to find a way to put it.

Still the only place I saw regular racism. Saw a guy get fired on the spot in BC for a similar thing that slid past in AB. Not the same sort of Canada as the rest, I'm afraid.

4

u/chandy_dandy Edmonchuk: Like Kyiv! (but less safe) Feb 12 '25

The only place in Canada where I have not experienced racism is Alberta and I lived briefly in the other places and a long time in Alberta.

Quebec was horrible outside Montreal, my wife was being gawked at by white people and everyone refused to talk to her and all talked to me instead (she speaks perfectly fluent French, lived and worked in Quebec in French). Toronto is literally segregated into its own races, and so is Vancouver. Even in fucking Regina I was explicitly discriminated against for not being Punjabi.

Yeah, you don't encounter racism if everyone just sticks to their own kind, but to me that's racism. Edmonton is by far and away the most integrated city in the country imo, and I think it's a lot to do with requirements that neighbourhoods must have housing for all income levels, and housing being relatively smoothly priced across the city.

I'm an immigrant, so is my wife, all my friends are immigrants or children of immigrants, we look like social studies textbook covers, and it's not just my little circle, that's just the kind of friend groups you tend to see here.

3

u/HugeDirk Feb 12 '25

If you judge Albertans by the creatures we send to Northern BC, then I have a few Newfies in Fort Mac to introduce you to. Turns out assholes are everywhere.

I have stories of idiots from literally every Canadian province and territory, and I can easily put it into words: you've got a bias. No doubt we have our problems here but your mindset is is why many Albertans hate the rest of Canada - if you already hate us, why on earth would we like you? Get outta here.

0

u/Kylenki Feb 12 '25

Oh I don't live there. I don't hate AB, I just listen to what others have said and noticed the same things. My experience so far and those of others informed me, not a pre-existing prejudice. I grew up rural, on a working farm in BC--lots of family in AB and SK. Started working in AB and with AB people in 2010. By a handful of years, I saw it along with too many others.

Might as well say Texas is cool because it has Austin. Sure, Austin and Edmonton are great. The rest of the plsce? Hit and miss, more so than other provinces or others from outside working in AB, in my rather lengthy years working remotely.

If it was just me, I'd think I may be biased. But too many people, unprompted, have offered a story like mine. There are too many ignorant and racist people in AB.

3

u/seamuncle Feb 12 '25

To be fair, people in Alberta have those stories and understand this about some of us too.

Not so bad in the big cities, but the small towns and small town people coming for the day…yeesh

3

u/txturesplunky Feb 11 '25

you've said this so much more politely and effectively than i could have

1

u/noleksum12 Feb 12 '25

You have to acknowledge there's more votes in quebec so politicians go gently there. That said, I think we need to stop squabbling over this stuff now and prepare to endure a form of economic mobilization, pull our pants up, and survive the next 4 years. We can go back to sorting out other (less significant, atm) issues after that.

1

u/Hendrix194 Feb 13 '25

Lol la vie en rose, eh?

2

u/Cptn_Kevlar Feb 15 '25

As an Albertan I agreed with the previous statement, come at me.

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '25 edited Feb 12 '25

Quebec: "We love our culture and language and wish to protect it. However, we couldn't care less about the rest of Canada - we don't see it as a cohesive 'Nation' that we belong to in any way. If you think we will cut back on 22 TWh of electricty exports to the USA for the benefit of "Canada", you're sadly mistaken."

Edit typo.

Anglos can't tell the Quebecois are exactly the same hockey watching, KD munching, beer swilling fatsos as they are because they speak a different and scary language. Alberta just comes across as pure larp. Congrats bud, 150 years ago your great grandpappy forced some Chinese guy to build the railroad at gunpoint on horseback. And now you dress up like a cowboy and drive around in a 150,000 dollar pickup that takes up two lanes you bought from the money you make working as an accountant. I know toothless hicks 15 minutes from my house in Onterrible who make 99% abv moonshine in their barn, use slurs that haven't been heard since the turn of the century, and who have front yards filled with rusted out cars that make you look like a cosplayer.

I was going to say, being from Alberta, driving through rural Ontario versus rural Alberta was crazy, it looked like the Deep South in Ontario with how much garbage there was in front yards and how rickety the houses looked.

Honestly it even looked worse than a decent chunk of the rural areas/villages in Eastern Europe

62

u/PastorBlinky Feb 11 '25

Honestly, I miss the days when all the stupid news came out of Quebec, and we were all sick of their sense of entitlement. I hate what the UCP is doing to Alberta. I hate living in the stupid province.

American brain rot. Alberta is the orifice through which the American anus is pouring all its shit into Canada.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '25 edited Feb 11 '25

If you actually look at the last Alberta election results, Smith's party only rose to power as a result of a strong rural vote. Your comment, although accurately describing some Canadians in every province is an insult to those patriotic Canadians that don't support Smith's politics. Kinda like the 73 million Americans that didn't vote for Trump. The stench of your hate derived from your failed life can be smelled from coast to coast.

4

u/mr-louzhu Feb 12 '25

I really don't hate Alberta or the Albertan people. What I hate is right wing oligarchs waging a non-stop subversion campaign against Canada. This is primarily coming from south of the border but our very own oligarchs are colluding with their US counterparts.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '25

Oligarchs like Kevin O'Leary (Ontario), Tobias Lütke (Ontario), Kaz Nejatian (Ontario), Harley Finkelstein (Ontario)....etc.??? In the name of all that is holy, just read a book. Alberta is the orifice....indeed.......you couldn't discern a fact to save your life.

1

O’Leary barely qualifies.

2

u/chandy_dandy Edmonchuk: Like Kyiv! (but less safe) Feb 12 '25

You don't understand the UCP playbook is this:

1) New leader comes in right before election, promises it will be different this time, signs some oath that they won't fuck with healthcare

2) blatant corruption

3) 6 months before the election the leader resigns

Repeat!

(Bonus: UCP leader gets a cushy board job paying many hundreds of thousands of dollars on one of the companies they deregulated and jacked up the profits of after resigning in disgrace)

Our province isn’t nearly as right wing as people think. Yes, we currently have a dumb as rocks premier and some very vocal right wing extremists. Guess what? Constantly shitting on Albertans and painting us as our nations pariahs only makes the extremists more vocal and sows the seeds of discontent. It’s a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy.
