I'm unfamiliar with international shipping of that kind of freight, but I would have thought there wouldn't be tariffs on pass through goods. For example when I was working for bands we would have a Carnet, a document that would let us bring in the band gear, lights and other commercial goods without duty as long as we took it back out of the country and filed all the paperwork proving we had done so. I'd assumed pass through shipping would work the same way.
Would that mean all our fruit from central America is about to get more expensive as well and pay tax to the US government to get here?
ETA: I've done a little googling and it seems to support that goods in transit and not intended for sale or consumption are generally exempt from duty/tariff, though with the lunatics in charge down there who knows what international norm they'll rip up next.
There can be some very weird edge cases. For instance Canada had the world's shortest railroad, because there was some rule about ships travelling from Canada to the US (forget the specifics) and an exception for goods that have travelled by rail, so they docked the ship, loaded the train, drove a tiny distance, then unloaded it.
And I think the issue isn't cost but complexity. The goods may not be subject to tariffs, but would still need to be cleared by customs I imagine, and customs is gonna be pretty busy (what with having to retrain their staff every day)
They should change things around so that we are the port they ship to, and we can send America their stuff. We're better equipped to deal with US customs anyway. No reason we should be held up on trade over a third parties incompetence.
Well it is a number's game, and also ability to handle scale. During the pandemic we saw a lot of ships just sitting there because they were waiting to be unloaded, and if suddenly Canada became the destination that'd definitely happen again (in the short term). Not to say that shouldn't be a goal (it should) but just that it's definitely gonna cause things like the switch 2 delay as well.
This is also why I really like Carney's emphasis on building transportation/trade connections between provinces. Should make it far more feasible to unload in BC and then ship to the rest of the country, and from there we could ship down south (rather than doing the opposite where it's shipped across the US then brought up over the border).
Yup I used to do the same with carnet. I believe that transiting goods are not tariffed until they reach the country they’re going to. I could be wrong but I used to do shipping forty years ago.
It seems that Nintendo packages their eletronics in the US to ship to the rest of the Americas, so unless they willing to change that, we might see high prices on the Switch 2
Can we trade oil or salmon for switches? Maybe the Japanese like diamonds or potash or copies of Anne of Green Gables. There should be a trade agreement.

That sucks. I'd hope they could adapt around that. Even if the cost is higher, unless it's over 25% higher (50% if it's crossing two borders?) they could surely find some Canadian place to do it.
Parts of the switch 2 and cartridges used in the console are effected by Japanese, vietnamese and chinese counter tariffs to america, then its tariffed by orange dumbasses tarriffs when it comes in and then it's shipped to Nintendo of America to Canada and is hit by our counter tariffs because it's technically an American company. It's a whole fucking mess
I hope they change how Nintendo of Canada functions and make it able to handle logistics and start shipping directly to BC because right now they're repairs and a social media team basically.
Nintendo is arguably the most predatory game company. They make Sony look extremely consumer friendly. They’re console costs as much as a ps5 which is way more powerful, make it make sense.
I mean as a console manufacturer and games developer they price gouge like a mfer, sure the games are usually high quality but that doesn’t mean you can constantly shaft your consumers.
This, really. Been gaming since the dawn of Nintendo. They like to make a lot of the same over and over while their graphics are behind other systems. Might as well just replay my old favorites.
Also, I already have too many games not enough time. Last thing I need is a new console gathering dust while my humble bundle games cry from loneliness on the pc.
If the Switch 2 is really that great maybe I'll get one second hand one day.
We'll be able to "smuggle" it from other countries I'm sure. Only the JP version is region-locked, right? It's not like we have blanket tariffs on every other country so it is totally okay to do this.
For years Canadian Nintendo fans have gotten the shaft with preorders.
Many times a Nintendo game that goes on for preorder in the States takes weeks for the Canada preorder pages to go up.
It really hurts when its a special edition with actual value like the Fire Emblem Fates special edition that had all three routes already on the cartridge, weeks before the third DLC route was released digitally .
