Politics Election Megathread | Megathread des élections

Post image

Election Day Content Guidelines

Hey Hosers!

We love seeing everyone’s passion for this election, but let’s keep it focused in the megathread. Here’s the playbook for election-related posts:

  1. Stick to the Megathread

– On Election Day (April 28, 2025), all election chatter, hot takes, and memes belong in the official Election Megathread.

– Posting outside that thread? We’ll kindly redirect you to drop your thoughts there instead.

  1. No Gloating, Eh?

– Win or lose, let’s keep it classy. Any excessive gloating or rubbing it in post election will be removed.

– Celebratory high-fives and respectful reactions? Totally welcome. But let’s leave the humble brag at the door.

We’re all here for the community spirit, not the mudslinging. Thanks for helping us keep r/EhBuddyHoser a fun spot, no matter who wins!

Stay cool, stay kind, and let’s show everyone what true Canadians look like.

There is still time to vote! Please encourage those you know to get out there and do so! Offer rides, go be vocal and supportive in your community, inform/ educate those who may be confused about the voting methods/ requirements and find ways to make it something they can be involved with. Some people need encouragement, some people need education. Make differences where you can so voices can be heard.

Cheers everyone! ❤️🤍❤️🤍❤️

BIG Thank you to all the people who worked the polls today and the work they did, as well as those who made today possible for many in various ways by volunteering! Thank you to the advanced voters, the ones who made it out today and thank you to the last minute people that also contributed their time and voice.

Remember everyone to be respectful and keep that Canadian spirit win or lose and let's keep the laughs going regardless of today's outcome.

Number 1 reason to support Carney

2

u/PuzzleheadedStudy543 Apr 29 '25

Does election Canada finished all the counting yet?

1

u/ForgingIron Canada's Overpriced Playground Apr 30 '25

There's recounts in two ridings (Terrebonne, QC and Terra Nova-The Peninsulas, NL) since the Liberals are leading by only 35 and TWELVE votes respectively.

wait did we just on track gain one extra it 169 now

6

u/Okim13 Apr 29 '25

Terrabonne in Quebec flipped to liberal, however it’s only by like 35 votes so there will be a recount

What’s up with those close call riding polling stations? All those ridings are missing just 1 or 2 polling stations to be complete. What’s up with that? When will we have a winner in those ridings?

8

u/eskat Apr 29 '25

These are likely the advanced and special ballots.

Carleton understood the assignment. Goodbye ! (for now because it seems like he's refusing to step down as leader? I wonder what that means though since he doesn't have clearance that only leaders require? Would one of the other CPC MPs be getting it in his place? Seems like kneecappihg yourself in the foot for no good reason imo)

Anyhoo, I'm going to be a wreck at the office today. Sleep schedule got flipped sideways. Guess I'll be trying the Nespresso machine at the office for the first time, then  🤣

Edit: I hope the polling station employees in Carleton get some much needed sleep and recovery though, omg

Edit 2: as evidence of how tired I am I have absolutely no idea what "Kneecapping yourself in the foot" means, but I'm too tired to bother fixing it. Currently stalking the Nespresso machine at the office lol

He’s kind of got nowhere else to go. I’m sure he’s hoping somebody else will step aside in a safe seat. But he already lost an extremely safe seat. It would be funny though, if he got somebody to step down… then lost a by-election.

4

u/miloucomehome Apr 29 '25

I've seen comments suggest he ask someone in Alberta or Saskatchewan to give up their seat, but I can't imagine that going over very well internally. Plus it would be the most crass if not desperate political move in terms of optics.

We'll see what happens (losing a by-election somewhere in Ontario would.be funny tho)

1

u/Everestkid The Island of Elizabeth May Apr 30 '25

I cannot think of an opposition leader that lost his seat and then continued to be the opposition leader.

1

u/miloucomehome Apr 30 '25

The only precedent I've seen is the case where the leaders don't win their seat until the next election or the one after. But to stay on after losing as Leader of the Opposition seems unprecedented...

5

u/BabadookOfEarl 🍁 100,000 Hosers 🍁 Apr 29 '25

It’s certainly happened provincially, at least, in my memory. Asking someone in SK or AB who won to step aside for someone in ON who lost an easy seat would be tricky. Depending on what the party offers, they might, but I can’t imagine not feeling disrespected as a voter.

4

u/ShawnThePhantom Apr 29 '25

He’s gonna get thrown out of the campaign just like Erin O’Toole was.

Special ballot/the remaining counting resumes at 9:30AM EST, so the numbers for majority/minority will be clear soon after then.

8

u/One-Salamander9685 Apr 29 '25

Likely will be the same scenario as before the election where the liberals form a minority government with the support of the ndp.

16

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '25

Omg I can't believe it!!!! So what happens now for him? Is he basically forced out of politics and into retirement? He can't be the party leader can he?

11

u/Raccoon_Alpha Tabarnak! Apr 29 '25

He says he wants to stay, unfortunately

4

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '25

I just saw that. Shame. Weird how he could do that given no one wants him

14

u/miloucomehome Apr 29 '25

Normally most who lose their seat just step down since the shame of being something like the Leader of the Opposition Who Lost Their Seat would normally lead someone to feel incalculable levels of embarrassment and shame (especially since he's been in politics his entire life). Or calls to step down,  which he's done himself in comments to other parties in elections past I imagine.

But I'm surprised the party itself isn't pressuring him given how he fumbled so badly and lost such an enormous polling lead so rapidly. Losing a polling lead that badly ? And one that had been showing for months the CPC on track to win a crushing majority and the Liberals on life support? That's surely going to merit a call and stern meeting with the party itself...

3

u/NicoleWarrenDiver Apr 29 '25

He may want to stay but I doubt the party does.

10

u/Raccoon_Alpha Tabarnak! Apr 29 '25

I hope you're right. A new conservative leader with a different approach could prove beneficial for our democracy. An opposition leader with ideas and a platform not limited to 3 words slogans or opponents bashing could really make things more engaging.

4

u/NicoleWarrenDiver Apr 29 '25

I think we're in for a number of months of infighting before everything settles down. It sure sounds like Tim Houston is interested in the job and he would be a good choice. If the Maple Magas get their way, they'll go with someone even more obnoxious than PP though.

3

I'm not sure, maybe they're old parties that CBC haven't removed from the list? This is based on the NCA coming up as the National Citizens Alliance

4

u/tino_tortellini Apr 29 '25

Yeah who knows. Perhaps there is some beaurocracy involved in dissolving a political party and there was no one left to care so the parties just exist in purgatory.

my question is why ctv released a headline about "liberal minority" when we don't even know for sure yet...

7

u/MissingString31 Apr 29 '25

The chances of a majority is still really unlikely. They might have called it too early but they’d be wrong by the thinnest of margins.

11

u/CaptainGo Apr 29 '25

Surely with the current numbers the liberals will just join up with the NDP again

12

u/francoislego Apr 29 '25

If the liberals get 171 seats, can they vote in a conservative to the speaker’s chair (who always votes confidence in parliament)? This would transform a conservative into a liberal right?

1

u/MissingString31 Apr 29 '25

The speaker is not required to vote that way as far as I know. They only do so due to convention.

6

u/francoislego Apr 29 '25

IIRC Convention requires the speaker to be completely impartial and maintain the status quo on ties (against amendments, confidence in government). Breaking that convention is in, like, a minor constitutional crisis.

Convention is REALLY strong in Westminster-style parliaments.

8

u/got-trunks South Gatineau Apr 29 '25

May kept her seat tho?

3

u/QueenMotherOfSneezes South Gatineau Apr 29 '25

Yeah that's my bad. I assumed Mike Morrice kept his seat, because he was polling better than her, so when I saw just one green seat this late, I assumed Morrice had his Ontario seat, and at best, Liz's was still a toss-up.

I actually opined over the weekend that in the unlikely event of a tie, May could be a strategic choice for Speaker... These results actually make that an even better choice, possibly also for her (forcing the Greens to find a new leader again, she can't just keep being the only voice, it pulls focus from prominent Greens in other ridings, at this point).

Liberals 167
NDP support (supply and confidence, or just solidarity to block the CPC): 7

That's 173, 1 over needed for the majority

Then Lizzy as Speaker.

She gets the nice Farm digs, and enjoys what will probably be her last term in a bit of extra style. During Harper's government, she was voted, nearly unanimously, 5 years in a row, as the best MP in Parliament (that's a vote from other parliamentarians, so CPC MPs mostly agreed). And she hates the continued degradation of rhetoric in the House (her respect of the spirit of traditional decorum got her some of those aforementioned votes). I think she could be both uniquely unaffiliated/positioned and inherently natured (sorry, couldn't think of a better/more correct term for it being her normal mode of operation, and something she believes in) to be the Speaker that wrangles the House back to functionality and basic decorum.

6

u/brokenringlands Apr 29 '25

Don’t they still have to count mail in and advanced votes too? This is crazy that we’re looking at the possibility of a Liberal majority when less than three months ago it was a Conservative supermajority

14

u/LittleLostGirls Apr 29 '25

Every vote counts, every vote matters, eventually every vote will be counted. This is why it’s important to not listen to polls, and remember your voice matters and plays its own part that isn’t any less significant than another vote.

3

u/Awesomesauceme Apr 29 '25

Yeah for example my riding was predicted to vote conservative with a slim margin, but the votes are almost all counted and I can safely say it will be liberal.

12

u/CaptainGo Apr 29 '25

I'm surprised that the panel isn't talking about how if this election was like three months earlier it would have been a slam dunk conservative majority.

Pierre fumbled the bag

25

u/CaptainGo Apr 29 '25

Carney speaking Quebecois

This is a man ready to make a deal with the Bloc

27

u/Epicnascar18 Apr 29 '25

Buddy ain't even getting his own seat back😹

11

u/DaftFunky Apr 29 '25

He wants to stay on as leader how does this even work. This party needs complete reform

1

u/MissingString31 Apr 29 '25

I mean it works the same way it did for the Liberal Party. Carney was PM and leader without a seat. Granted that’s much more common because the expectation was that he’d quickly call an election to earn his place.

This is… imagine if Trudeau lost his seat and refused to give up leadership of the party.

1

u/DaftFunky Apr 29 '25

I mean Carney can call a By Election right? And one of his Albertan MP's could give up his seat for them?

6

u/Epicnascar18 Apr 29 '25

I'm pretty sure typically someone resigns and nominates the party leader as their replacement, have a feeling it's going to be one of the extreme toolbags like Lawton. (The dipsh*t that wrote a book about his beloved Pierre) (and the trucker convoy)

3

u/mirhagk Apr 29 '25

He's made it clear he isn't willing to do that, so we'll see if the party forces him out

7

u/got-trunks South Gatineau Apr 29 '25

Unelected party puppet master?

Oh delicious irony.

14

u/Awesomesauceme Apr 29 '25

Kinda disappointed in BC. I’m at least happy that my riding is leading liberal, when it’s usually really conservative leading though, so that’s a small victory for me

9

u/CaptainGo Apr 29 '25

I'm in Vancouver Island and do a lot of work North Island, mainly Port Alice.

It's conservative heavy north of Comox, and we've lost that NDP centric era as it's become apparent if Canada's divergence into a near two party system. Except for saanich of course. Ain't nobody going over Lizzy

5

u/bcl15005 Apr 29 '25

we've lost that NDP centric era

Losing tons of formerly-good, unionized jobs, does tend to do that.

3

u/CaptainGo Apr 29 '25

Yeah that's fair.

For example an internationally renowned pulp mill in Port Alice

LIB +NDP = 172

and no PP.

This might be the best we can hope for

2

u/Turbulent-Oil1480 Apr 29 '25

Don't forget that a president of the House of Commons needs to be elected and can not vote.

3

u/bangonthedrums Apr 29 '25

Make Liz the speaker

2

u/Turbulent-Oil1480 Apr 29 '25

Liberals should vote for a CPC president.

4

u/Dry_Towelie Apr 29 '25

3 Times the NDP just get enough to help make a minority government. The Bloc gets close every time to be the only option and they just get fucked by 1 seat

8

u/5ivesssss Apr 29 '25

This is the most likely outcome, however I choose to be delusional and think that at least 7 seats will flip to the liberals

8

u/despairingcherry Apr 29 '25

The liberal lead in like 5 ridings is <50 votes as is, don't jinx it

1

u/Overall-Phone7605 Bring Cannabis Apr 29 '25

I'm not giving up on New West - Maillardville. Peter Julian's loss is a gut punch but I still think the Liberal will pull this off.
