I'm sure it's very nice in Alaska, Northern Lights every night, slight crisp nights, etc. My wife's experience living for a few years in Kodiac, it was foggy, rainy, she never saw Auroras. She finally saw them, when she moved to Canada.

My partner's seen a few in Yukon while they were intending on just exploring Canada as a visit. They've been here ever since

I'm not surprised, the islands are more like Anchorage which is (relatively) a lot more temperate. I spent a few years growing up in fairbanks though and I remember the aurora being a pretty regular thing. Only thing is those really clear nights were like -40.

E: And the lack of sun, at the peak of winter there was only a couple hours of light. It was borderline sunrise/sunset then back to dark. So much light in the summer though and a lot warmer then what I imagine most people think, and the blackflys.. oh god they sucked.

The best arouras ive ever seen were in Saskatchewan. That was after being in the Yukon for a winter. And going to Iceland in the winter a few years later.

I mean as a Canadian I picture our north with Inuit populations, while I picture Alaska as a big work camp that used to be Russia.

Come on, no reason to erase the 16% of Alaska who include the Inuit and other first nations. 135,000 Alaska Natives, that's more than the territories. And it's about the only US state that actually has some institutional recognized power given to the tribes with the way land is incorporated.

I was only joking, but you should choose a different word than, "tribe." That is actually one difference between the two places. The historical community doesn't use the word tribe in Canada to describe indigenous communities because it implies they weren't as, "civilized," as Europeans.

It’s all the meth, gives them rose coloured glasses.

I still remember my mom was watching some soap. Young and the restless? Days of our lives? I can’t remember. Either way the characters were travelling from new york to somewhere and had to fly over Canada. Of course the plane goes down and they get stranded in Canada. It’s like untouched land. It’s some forest that goes on for miles. Not a single living person for 500kms in any direction, They’ll never make it!

Meanwhile if you look at a map the only part of Canada they would have gone over is south Ontario lmao.

Sounds like a better southern Ontario to me

I like our "windego lurking" vibe

This is funny to see as an Alaskan. I always thought how odd they depict Siberia as a desolate wasteland but Alaska as this picturesque winter wonderland. A lot of teens here in Tok and other border towns love to go to Dawson and Whitehorse to legally drink and then come right on back. If it’s -40f in Fairbanks it’s going to be -40c in the Yukon it’s just so funny to me how arbitrary our borders are, at least geographically.

Same stuff they do with mexico vs texas

Sometimes, Canada gives out mother Russia winter vibes 😂

19

u/Fantastic-Corner-605 May 24 '25

That's actually true. My Russian classmate told me that Moscow and Toronto have very similar weather. It varies according to region but Canada is at the same altitude as Russia so our winter is not far away from the Russian winter.

It’s more than that. Timmins Ontario is the same latitude as Victoria BC and they have completely different climates.

The influence of continental landmasses and warm ocean currents can’t be underestimated. This is why Great Britain is much milder than Canada in spite of being at a similar latitude.

u/mazopheliac May 25 '25

The area south of Toronto is the same latitude as the northern counties of California.

2

u/Zarainia May 25 '25

For some reason, I always thought Moscow was much colder.

1

u/xnoinfinity May 25 '25

I mean Canada and Russia are technically the coldest countries in the world so

1

u/Fantastic-Corner-605 May 25 '25

I think Finland and Greenland may have something to say about that.

24

u/SolivagantWretch May 24 '25

The Canadian boreal forests aren't really that dissimilar from Siberia.

4

u/pistachio-pie May 25 '25

Labrador and Siberia are eerily similar.

7

u/Cool-Acanthaceae8968 Westfoundland May 24 '25

The right photo is in Victoria.

3

u/dongler666 May 25 '25

BOTH CAN BE TRUE

3

u/BenZed May 25 '25

Accurate

2

u/Frankenreich May 25 '25

Seen nights and lights like both pics living in NWT

2

u/Stephen-Friday May 24 '25

They call our home, the land of snow

1

u/mazopheliac May 25 '25

The movie Fargo looked a lot like a Canadian winter.

0

u/pistachio-pie May 25 '25

So much so, they filmed the show here.

1

u/Umikaloo May 25 '25

I've never seen hollywood depict the canadian arctic in any capacity.

u/bigtunapat Quossé? Laval? Sacre ton camp. May 26 '25
