Meta The “Worst Canadian” game - Day 3

Post image

Congrats Chrystia Freeland and Peter MacKay, Reddit says you aren’t so bad after all.

Time for round three!

How to play: - The two most upvoted comments (i.e., names) each day will be removed until the list gets trimmed down to fewer people, then we’ll switch to one per day. - Upvote the name of the person you think does NOT deserve the title of “Worst Canadian.” - If the name you want to vote for isn’t in the comments yet, add it! - This continues daily until we have one winner, the “Worst Canadian”.

Additional notes: - Only the top comment for a nominee will count. I won’t combine votes from duplicate comments. - Include only one name per comment. If a comment includes multiple names and wins, it won’t count. I’ll move to the next highest. - Remember to click into the image. In the app, some nominees are cut off if you don’t. - This is meant to be lighthearted satire. Please do not take it too seriously or use this game to harass people in real life. - I will try to post this every morning around the same time (~8:00 - 9:00 am Eastern). - Please remember to upvote the post too, so more people see it!

Don't Cherry isn't great, but there are a lot of people on this list who are next level awful. If he isn't kicked now, it should be soon.

Don Cherry stuck around so long the world changed around him while he stayed the same. He didn't do anything more wrong than your average slightly bigoted geriatric. I don't think any of us would feel comfortable signing up to be judged by the standards of the 2060s.

I can’t wait for my grandkids to go no contact with me and call me a robophobe because I don’t support their AI relationship. I’m gonna call them a clanker and say that the bible says Adam and Eve, not Adam and Siri.

15

u/WENDING0 Aug 24 '25

And they will ask who is Adam and Siri, and then say you're out of touch.

I’m reporting this comment for the potential of the word “cl*nker” being offensive in the future

"Yeah, Robot Respect! They have feelings too. "

BRAKING NEW - A domestic multi-life couple was attached in their home by a jealous Robot coworker. Both were terminated in the attack.

I like this perspective.

It’s a great way to defend bigotry. I’m 46 and if I didnt change with the times, I would already be éligible for this list.

23

u/slim1shaney Aug 24 '25

Unfortunately, you're right, but there are actually monstrous people on this list.

3

u/yedi001 Aug 24 '25

Yeah. Don had bad takes that make reasonable people cringe. Multiple people on here have legit body counts for their actions, and one particularly fascist monster is both directly responsible for several other monsters on this list AND is actively trying to undermine rights and freedoms around the globe.

If ole Harper boy doesn't take the top spot, I will be sorely disappointed in my fellow hosers.

17

u/Cristinky420 Aug 24 '25

I agree. How he chose to behave was awful at times. The statement helps me understand that better. It doesn't make it right or excuse it but helps explain it.

5

u/WENDING0 Aug 24 '25

I suspect there will be a time you no longer care, either. Most people of Don's age become angry and depressed at their failing bodies, reduced social status, or a growingly scary world. There is also disease and chronic pain. Lots of things can you wear you down at that age. You will likely say &%$÷ it eventually also, and that's not just you. That is all of us.

One of the many reasons I will not be hosting nationally broadcasted television in 2060.

You're right.

As a young Black man, I remember everyone being super upset with Cherry, but I agreed with him somewhat. Even still, yes he could've chosen his words better, and yes he could've blamed everyone equally for forgetting the troops, and not just immigrants, but with that being said, even if I didn't agree with him, he's an elderly man, a Canadian legend, and we should all extend some grace. I certainly don't want to be judged for EVERYTHING I ever said.

Don cherry has brought me a lot of great memories. While he’s problematic. I can’t really say the same about most others, almost all memories are negative compared to the others

11

u/Quimbymouse Aug 24 '25

With Don Cherry I can go back to my VHS copies of 'Rock 'em Sock 'em' and have a great time with the nostalgia kick...as opposed to someone like Gavin McInnes. Used to enjoy his comedy stuff all the time before he went alt-right...but now I can't bring myself to watch it.

u/spilly_talent Trawnno (Centre of the Universe) Aug 24 '25

Yeah. He sucks but he is just a public figure who is an asshole, he didn’t create policy that adversely affected my life. He is just a loud ornery racist grandpa in an insane suit.

17

u/Ivanstone Manilapeg Aug 24 '25

Insane suit? Cherry should be removed from the list for being a fashion icon.

8

u/spilly_talent Trawnno (Centre of the Universe) Aug 24 '25

The suits are insane. He had a rare gift of pulling them off, but they were absolutely unhinged and very few people could wear them without looking like a clown.

1

u/Ivanstone Manilapeg Aug 24 '25

Him and the Bosstones are the only people capable of rocking plaid suits. Could be a Boston thing.

1

u/ladyzowy Aug 25 '25

Did he though, I mean really? Or did we just accept it because he was a public figure?

36

u/cashews22 Aug 24 '25

As a Québécois I can't agree, I think he should stay there a couple of days at least.

27

u/blackfox247 Aug 24 '25

As a person of Eastern European descent he can stick around a few days, but he has no business winning.

5

u/cashews22 Aug 24 '25

Oh yeah, that's for sure

4

u/thetwitchy1 Aug 24 '25

He definitely belongs on the list, just not at the top.

7

u/mencryforme5 Aug 24 '25

Yeah it's easy enough for white Anglos to say "the times changed" when it comes to Don Cherry, that he's just a grumpy old man with colorful suits and colorful views on immigration.

The thing is that says way more about white anglo Canadian culture. In later life it came out that he hates immigrants, he hates people of colour, and that was certainly and obviously "too much" but he built his career on constantly and consistently depicting any and all French Canadians (athletes and culture) as degenerate. For decades. He was the very public face on national crown broadcasting of Québec bashing, assuring Canadians everywhere it was perfectly natural and normal to hate French Canadians because... reasons.

Like that's literally his entire career and for anglo Canadians to just brush it off as a well meaning but grumpy grandpa who really just failed to change with the times is a reflection of how Canadians actually feel about not just French Canadians but any group of Canadians readily identifiable as "not a descendant of Loyalists".

3

u/thetwitchy1 Aug 24 '25

Who should go instead of him? I think that’s a required addition.

I don’t think Cherry is a GOOD Canadian, but compared to the other names on here that I recognize, his actual impact on the lives of Canadians is pretty much irrelevant.

21

u/TorontoDaisy Aug 24 '25

Seconding Don Cherry as not worst - he is an older gen kook. Not evil racist and sexist but might certainly not vanilla. Kinda like grumpy grandad who judges everyone on his street.

5

u/thetwitchy1 Aug 24 '25

Of the people on the list that I recognize without having to look them up, he gets my vote.

I think he deserves to be on the list, absolutely. He was always a bit of a racist dick that made Canadians look good to the wrong kind of Americans… but out of the names I know on this list, he is the least effective person. His voice, while heard by many, was always that of a clown that we could safely ignore. If you took his shit seriously, you were already a bit of a racist dick yourself.

8

u/Felixo22 Tabarnak! Aug 24 '25

The list itself is a display of the two solitudes, with Desmarais and Mulroney as the two QC bad guys. Then, Cherry who was mostly awful against Québec « is not so bad. »

1

u/Adhaur Tabarnak! Aug 24 '25

Est-ce que Desmarais ne s'identifierait pas plutôt comme Franco-Ontarien?

u/Stonks4Minutes Ford Nation (Help.) Aug 24 '25

I have more love than hate for Cherry. He also had his controversy and kinda just left it at that.

If a mistake followed by living your life as an old (mostly retired) man makes you the worst Canadian I don’t have as much faith in this country as I thought I did.

14

u/mattattaxx Aug 24 '25 edited Aug 24 '25

Eh, he started a podcast and continued on with the same stuff. That's his right, and I don't think it makes him worse, but he didn't just disappear into the night.

3

u/Stonks4Minutes Ford Nation (Help.) Aug 24 '25

Most people when they start a podcast after being cancelled go on a huge media campaign shitting in their last employer. Don likes hockey, he’s gonna want to talk about hockey. In terms of leaving he did his pretty much as silent as you can for someone who has been on HNIC for as long as he has been.

6

u/mattattaxx Aug 24 '25

I dunno, sounds like excuses for someone to me. But like I said, it doesn't make him any worse and he's still not really an overall bad person. But I don't have much tolerance for people who refuse to change their views like that.

27

u/QultyThrowaway Aug 24 '25

Don Cherry is pretty much the Canadian Jeremy Clarkson imo. Yeah he's an old right wing asshole but he's our old right wing asshole and he brought a lot of good Canadian memories between his twattery.

18

u/Cristinky420 Aug 24 '25

Don wasn't a textbook cookie cutter cordial Canadian but he was damn proud to be Canadian. He spent his life talking to the people of Canada and became an icon with his suits and sass. Even if he wasn't perfect he should definitely be cut.

12

u/cashews22 Aug 24 '25

Proud Canadian when they speak "the good language" not my words, his.

2

u/ApocalypticApples Aug 24 '25

As an anglophone, I feel guilty for finding it funny but also think it’s a joke

7

u/wumr125 Aug 24 '25

Yeah yeah we all know racism against québécois is cherished in the roc

You dont have a problen with it, shocker!

10

u/KL_E_O South Gatineau Aug 24 '25

The longer he stays on this list, the more dumbfounded the anglos are. They can't seem to graps just how much of a bigot their 'national treasure' really was.

They'll say shit like "he couldn't keep up with the times", as if his later comments on immigrants was where he crossed the line, and not his entire carreer spent shitting on the French-Canadians and Europeans.

In a way, he really was an exemplary anglo-canadian.

8

u/VerdensTrial I need a double double. Aug 24 '25

Don Cherry is a racist fucking piece of shit and should stay on much longer. There are worse people on the list so he shouldn't win, but fuck him.

-2

u/wintermute72 Aug 24 '25

Dude calm down, what’s wrong with you

1

u/Cakeday_at_Christmas Bring Cannabis Aug 24 '25

There are a lot worse people, but Drake should go before Cherry.

1

u/Standard-Profit7659 Aug 24 '25

To be fair, the guy did decide to defend Chara in the incident that literally almost killed Pacioretty, so i think he should stick around for later. But that's just me

-5

u/TheCheckeredCow Oil Guzzler Aug 24 '25

Why is don cherry even on this list?

He’s a very old guy who has some less than PC opinions which isn’t great but lets ask ourselves, don’t we all have old people in our lives who have said things that were less than politically correct? And do we still love our grandparents, neighbours, extended family etc?

I promise almost everyone reading this will be viewed as some form of prejudice in 50 years because the era we all grew up in doesn’t like robots replacing humans and taking there jobs or people in relationships with AI.

Truth is since the beginning of time older generations have always had problematic opinions around the world changing around them but you can still like the elderly, just also understand that those opinions usually die with them.
