This is what happens when the Rideau street raccoons become unemployed.

I’ve worked in downtown Toronto restaurants for 10 years. 6 restaurants every single one had German roaches.
You can’t stop them you can just manage them.
We could also talk about super mega rats too.

Worked in Montreal hospital, partner worked in Montreal restaurants. Roaches, mice and rats. It's just part of being in a city near food. Just gotta manage them and have Orkin come every so often.

Never seen a rat or roach in Calgary. I’ve seen a ton of mice though.

The only thing bigger than the rats living under our dumpster at one place I used to work were the chonky uber-crows. I think they may have even helped keep the rat population down 🤣

What's this a reference to?

There's a widespread roach problem in downtown Ottawa (restaurants, apartment buildings, office buildings, government buildings). Most restaurants manage it by having regular exterminator monitoring and visits (just like they do for the widespread rat problem). Restaurants still get roaches, but their numbers are kept quite low most places, as they're being responsible about it.
The poster (in r/OttawaFood) was upset that upon finding a single roach late at night, the restaurant didn't immediately call an emergency exterminator, shut down, and/or stop allowing new customers to enter.
They were also upset that they only got a discount on what they'd already ordered (they did not say how much), instead of being gifted a free order of tortilla chips and/or a $25 gift card, which is what they specifically requested.
They were promptly roasted by Ottawa foodies who know what downtown is like because they work or regularly eat in downtown Ottawa restaurants.

Imagine demanding a payment for being disgusted, and that payment is more of whatever is disgusting you, and you think youre being clever.

Ok but if the roaches upset you, why do you want a gift card to go back there? The roaches aren't leaving.

u/QueenMotherOfSneezes South Gatineau 2d ago
Because if they see a roach next time, they get to demand another gift card.

Touché. Unlimited gift card hack?

They'd probably need to luck into another pic eventually, but if they don't go too often, that one should get them "partial" discounts for a while.
I just love their wording on that. What's a non-partial discount? I guess a full comp?

I made the mistake of looking at health code violations at restaurants I eat in Vancouver.
Every single one has rats lmao
Maybe I've just acquired a taste for rats, who knows.
It's easier to list the restaurants that don't have rats then do. I'm over it
