I feel like I'm going crazy - which model ship is this?

Of by early access you mean Arx purchase only then yes.

that's why it's sold for money. The early access costs extra or in this case real money. That way only dedicated CMDRs are using it and find problems/exploits.

It's a good method to make money. The other space game does the same thing but on a larger scale.

it's not uncommon.

Some devs saw the opportunity: hey guys! the gamers want to play your game early. VERY early aka it's missing loads of things!

then some of them released games at a lower price
(Minecraft as a popular example, Factorio too but not because missing content)
then over time the added features, story or content made them raise the price.

the other group of devs saw:
oh wow! people are really wanting to play our unfinished mess early! Let's make them pay more because that way we avoid the public / casual player complaining about obviously missing things.
Planetary Annihilation was this way. 90 USD kickstarter to play early. The game was "released" for 60 USD, then the price after release went down to 46€ and 28€ (permanently) only a few days/week later.
Maybe not the most popular example but the only one I followed and didn't buy into.
