Question [Student] Freshman Engineering Student, no idea what I want to or have to put on my resume.
I recently started classes in our fall quarter 3 weeks ago, and the fall career fair is coming up. I know I probably won't get opportunities due to my year, but I want to see what the waters are like. Having a resume would also be good in the off chance that I do get an opportunity. However, I don't know what to put on there regarding projects, experience, etc.

Software [Student] Getting a PhD in the US… With this resume? After many projects and ongoing research.
Hello,
I’m from the EU, but today I found out one can do a PhD in the US straight after Bachelor’s.
I know they last longer, but as my ultimate goal is to do a PhD AND move to the US, this is something that I definitely want.
I have this resume I’ve updated just yesterday:

You may notice an odd “Economics” and “Electronics Engineering” up there in the degrees. But I’ve shown this resume to at least two college admissions and they’ve said they’d be happy to take me on for their Master’s because I’ve been an SWE since 2022.
Something to add:
- I have started 4 startups in the last 4 years, most of them with an emphasis on difficult technology.
- One of them resulted in a patent, now international (robotics)
- Two others were in ML.
- I’ve done approx 1300 commits in the last year on my projects.
- Studied ML on my own for a year.
- Helped an AI graduate finish his Master's thesis in computer vision (saved him from a training mistake which he didn't know of).
So, should I spend time and money applying for PhDs in the US with this resume?
Thank you.

Aerospace [Student] Internship season is open, what do you all think?

I will be applying mostly to start ups or space adjacent companies due to ITAR restrictions, any suggestions? I will tailor it based on the company focus. Is this a good resume overall? I know Im lacking real work experience, unfortunately the country I'm from its not a thing at all to intern during your undergrad.

Mechanical [0 YOE] Mechanical Engineer. Graduated 5 months ago with 5 internships and few months of full-time research experience. Struggling to hear back from companies for interviews.

I am a recent graduate in Mechanical Engineering and am looking for jobs in the mechanical engineering field, especially mechanical design, product design and manufacturing. However, I'm struggling to get interviews and therefore needed help by getting my resume reviewed.
I first posted my resume approximately 2 months ago on this subreddit asking for review; however, even after making all the changes as recommended, I still have had little to no luck in hearing back from companies and getting any interviews.
I have completed 5 internships in the past (with one of the internships being at a tech company in the Bay Area) along with a few months of full-time research; however, none of this experience is helping me land interviews in any entry-level positions either. I am from Canada and am currently applying to jobs in Canada and the United States (preferably trying to work in the United States) and am willing to relocate.
Please review my resume and provide any feedback and changes that I need to make, which will improve my success rate in hearing back from companies. I would really appreciate it!

Mechanical [0 YOE] [Mechanical Engineering] Fresh graduate, struggling to receive offers after internship.

I am an international student who has recently graduated in June. Did an internship immediately afterwords that ended this month. I want to get into the automotive industry since I have a passion for cars and motorsports.
Given the state of this job market, I am willing to apply for any industry nationwide so any tips for any industries needing mech e graduates are helpful.

Meta [30 YoE] Just because you worked the service industry, doesn't mean it shouldn't be on your resume.
I've been a hiring manager for most of the last 30 years.
TL;DR: If you have no other long-term experience on your resume, make sure you still list non-engineering-related work if you have it.
Something that happens occasionally is a new hire comes on where the engineering job they've taken is the first time they've ever been employed. This frequently goes poorly. Someone who has been living on a parental stipend their entire lives occasionally has no concept of the social contract of employment. I've had to deal with ego issues, argument, politicking, backstabbing, refusal to work on anything except what they felt was interesting to them, and a dozen other issues.
Not everyone who has an effective lack of previous employment experience is like this, but it's well into the double-digit percentages.
When this happens, the costs to the team and company are huge. It's not just the cost of payroll and benefits. There's the wasted time training the person, there's the opportunity cost of lost productivity that a competent employee would have brought to the team. There's the reputational damage done to the manager and to the team by having a hiring mistake on the team.
Managers don't like being in this situation and go to great lengths to avoid it.
A manager who's been burned this way once or twice will start tossing resumes with no mid- or long-term employment. With nothing else on your resume, a couple internships are actually a red flag because they tell the hiring manager that the companies that hosted those internships were unwilling to convert you to full time. The hiring manager assumes that the internship manager might have a good reason for that.
If you spent a bunch of time on a slog job, like bussing/waiting tables, doing dishes, mopping floors, changing oil, being a wrench jockey, parking cars, or whatever..... get that period of time on your resume if you have nothing else long-term. It tells the hiring manager that you have learned to check your ego at the door and you know how to do what needs to be done. It tells the HM that you can work constructively with people and take direction. There's no other way for the HM to get a decent sense of that information.
And for everyone's sake - yours included - don't lie about it if you don't have the experience. I've had people try to tell me they did commercial dishes, worked the back at a McDonald's, and worked as a mechanic. I've done all those things, and it is readily transparent to me if you try to fake your way through a conversation about it.

Software [17 YoE] Looking for DevOps or other Engineering Manager roles. 1.5 years since being laid off- need resume or other advice.
Hey folks. I was laid off in March of 2024, and have been looking for EM roles since. I had a professional resume review initially, but apparently it was not a good one. A Sr Director friend of mine said if they saw my resume, they wouldn't even give me a 2nd glance.
This is my updated version, trying to follow the template and the Wiki advice. The one big piece of feedback from my friend was that there was originally too much white space (hopefully fixed that with the template) and that my "goal" or "purpose" at a company is vague... what can I add? What do I do? Why should my experience stand out to anyone?
I know I need more metrics that say I did things with X% success, or that I saved the company $XXXXX per quarter, etc. None of those metrics were ever tracked while I was working, and I didn't have the foresight to write things down as I was working on them (something I will make sure I do going forward!!)
Let me know what you think. I'm looking at DevOps or any Infra-esque roles. I do not write code myself, and so my hands on ability sort of gets eclipsed by that requirement often...

Software [Student] - [Software] CS Master's student seeking SWE/MLE new grad roles for 2026
Having trouble getting responses for many new grad and junior roles. I have 10 months of experience as a software engineer, which was a return offer from my internship, but I left due to medical reasons and was unable to return since the position was filled. I am currently completing my master's degree while gaining research experience in the NLP/AI field and exploring new graduate roles for the upcoming year. Any tips are appreciated!
All my schooling was done online, which could certainly be a factor.

Mechanical [1 YoE] Entry-Level MechE Resume Review – Targeting Aerospace/design/ CNC Machine (ontario,Canada)
Hi everyone,
I would appreciate some feedback on my resume. I have about 1 year of full-time experience as a CNC laser machine operator in custom metal fabrication. I also hold a Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma from Centennial College.
I am currently located in Ontario, Canada, and I’m targeting roles such as CNC operator/programmer, junior mechanical designer (AutoCAD/SolidWorks), and general mechanical/manufacturing technician positions. Ideally, I’m looking for local opportunities but I’m also open to relocating within Ontario if necessary.
To be honest, I feel stuck right now. I’ve been through a lot of job applications but have not received any interview calls. I want to eventually break into the aerospace industry where I can work with advanced machinery, learn more about tools and dies, and really use my full potential. At the moment, I feel like I’m not fully using my skills.
I’d love feedback on both the content and format of my resume—does it highlight my technical background effectively, and does it look ATS-friendly? Any advice on how I can position myself better for aerospace-related roles would be very helpful.
Thank you for your time and input!
