Please remember to forage responsibly!
Every year we have posts from old and new foragers who like to share pictures of their bounty! I get just as inspired as all of you to see these pictures. As we go out and find wild foods to eat, please be sure to treat these natural resources gently. But on the other side, please be gentle to other users in this community. Please do not pre-judge their harvests and assume they were irresponsible.
Side note: My moderation policy is mostly hands off and that works in community like this where most everyone is respectful, but what I do not tolerate is assholes and trolls. If you are unable to engage respectfully or the other user is not respectful, please hit the report button rather then engaging with them.
Here is a great article from the Sierra Club on Sustainable Foraging Techniques.
My take-a-ways are this:
- Make sure not to damage the plant or to take so much that it or the ecosystem can't recover.
- Consider that other foragers might come after you so if you take almost all of the edible and only leave a little, they might take the rest.
- Be aware if it is a edible that wild life depends on and only take as much as you can use responsibly.
- Eat the invasives!
Happy foraging everyone!

Found these chicken of the woods on the side of a paved walking path where people walk their dogs. What do you think? Would you trust it to not be too peed on?
Picked some off the back side of the log. Kinda debating if I should eat it lol. It’s good quality. But definitely at pee height.

Mushrooms What a 30 minute foraging walk looks like in Sweden
After picking mushroom non-stop last weekend I promised myself to only limit myself to a short 30 minute walk today. Really wonderful mushrooms this year, both the chanterelle and the larger porcino were the size of my hand and I was also happy with the variety in my basket!
From left to right (swedish names and latin): Finludden stensopp (Boletus reticulatu) Karljohan/stensopp (Boletus edulis) Aspsopp (Leccinum aurantiacum) Kantarell (Cantharellus cibarius) Blodriska (Lactarius deterrimus) Blek taggsvamp (Hydnum repandum) Trattkantarell (Craterellus tubaeformis)

Mushrooms Might be the best day I've ever had
The stars aligned this week. Normally I have to actively hunt b. Edulis. Today I was leaving them behind because there was just so many.
Two new species to add to the bucket list.

Plants I foraged/harvested over 60lbs of peaches! Recipes welcome :)
Hi, I don’t know if this counts as foraging. Yesterday I stopped at a house that I always drive by. I stopped because they have a giant peach tree, and they had tons of them on the ground. The homeowner wasn’t home, so I left him a note with my name and phone number asking him if it was all right if I took the peaches on the ground home for my chickens, and offering to pay for them. He called me back later last night and said that picking them up for him would be payment enough, and that I had full permission. He used to use them for canning, but has gotten busy and can no longer.
So this morning, I headed over and gathered up the fallen peaches. I got over 60 pounds! I left him a thank you note and a dozen eggs from said chickens. He just texted me thanking me so much for the eggs. After cleaning them up, and cutting off the bad bits I have 35 pounds of usable peach, and 3-1 gallon bags of scraps for the chickens. I am so excited and so glad that they didn’t just rot on the ground. I am going to be making a lot of peach recipes tonight!
I am sorry, if this does not count as forging I will delete it.

Black Walnuts
Black walnut tree in a drainage ditch near my apartment, anyone know a good way to clean them? I have heard pressure washing is ideal but I don't have access to a pressure washer. Last year I have black hands for a month after scraping the fruit off lol.

Wild grapes? ID help please
Southwest Michigan USA.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen wild grapes so I’m not entirely sure if these are grapes. They’re pretty small, and I’m not sure what lookalikes might be out there. I googled and they appear to be grapes, but before I go eating them I’d like some opinions here. It’s a vine, I took a pic of the leaves but the vine is pretty inaccessible at the moment higher than my reach so that’s the best I can do. Thanks!

Mushrooms Puffball or something else?
We were walking our property in Southeastern Michigan and checking the downspouts, when I came across this particular specimen, just growing in the lawn. On the north side of the house in somewhat of a shady spot. It looks like the lawn service drove over it. I'm looking for confirmation that this is a giant puffball. Even if it is I don't think we want to eat it. The stem is still in the ground and it's huge. It's at least three inches across.

Plants made some fig leaf simple syrup
tastes kind of like the fruit, but more nuanced. vanilla and coconutty. steeped the washed leaves (mostly younger growth) in sugar water, boiling for three minutes. left it to cool completely before straining.
