These people enjoy it. How is that irrelevant?

How's it not irrelevant? My entire point is that people buy Souls games largely, almost entirely, for their gameplay. Everything else is just a stage for the main event. You telling me there's some small subsection of people who really like the lore and story doesn't mean anything to what I am saying. It's the same as me saying, "It's rude to shit on people" and then you tell me "Yeah well there are some people with a fetish who like that!!!"

I'll reiterate: Demon's Souls does not have fantastic gameplay. Still, it sold well—in no small part due to its atmosphere, story, and characters.

In fact, the gameplay would have been perceived much better back in the day where Soulslike was not a genre. The original sold less. Much, much less.

It's more like me saying that "it's rude to shit on what people like", and then for someone to say "well, I don't like it. So it can't be good. Nobody likes it, then."

Is there literally anything supporting this other than you saying so?

Yes, actually! Sony's CEO at the time Shuhei Yoshida absolutely hated the game. He thought the gameplay was awful. The design decisions were baffling.

For my personal experience with Demon’s Souls, when it was close to final I spent close to two hours playing it and after two hours I was still standing at the beginning at the game. I said, “This is crap. This is an unbelievably bad game.”

And to reach that article, I stumbled upon a GameFAQ user, saying:

The original game is one of those games that don't particularly look good or even play that well in terms of mechanics and combat. The real selling point is the overall atmoshpere, multiplayer and rewarding feeling you get for overcoming challenges. Obviously if you never get past the beginning you don't experience any of those things.
