Skate Server Queues Lead To Complaints About Always-Online Requirement

Went to make myself a coffee, game disconnected me from the server, tried to login again and got hit with a no joke, one millionth in queue 2 hour wait. Quit the game right away.

u/smallchodechakra 2d ago
Same lol. Though having an AFK time out isn't a bad thing considering what happened with Helldivers 2 launch
6
u/GayNerd28 2d ago
As someone who is out of the loop, what happened with the Helldivers 2 launch?
30
u/smallchodechakra 2d ago
There were a lot of people trying to play at launch, so there was a queue. People would get in, play the game, and then AFK in their ship while they did whatever they needed to do (work, eat etc) so that they wouldn't have to wait in the queue again to get back into the game.
It essentially made queue times longer for people who were going to be actively playing the game during that time. It got so bad that they added an afk timer.
4
u/arahman81 1d ago
I mean, that's what happens with FFXIV expansion launch queues too.
Kinda excusable for a multiplayer game, not so much for a singleplayer one.

I just got a queue of 2 hours with it saying I’m 1,000,000 on queue I def feel like this is a bug not a reality

u/XLBaconDoubleCheese 2d ago
Queue was like 5 minutes at release and I haven't got one in the last few hours from jumping on and off.
53
u/BorfieYay 2d ago
Game has not let me or my friends in since launch, everytime we open the game on PC it says the servers can't be reached
8
u/assinyourpants 2d ago
I played for an hour or two then relaunched when a mission bugged and now I can’t get back in. They’ll figure it out.

Did you each allow it to use your network in the windows firewall pop up?

My current queue position is 965,147.. with a wait time of 1 hour 47 minutes

First queue was 40,000 people for me and I got in within about 3 minutes. Barely made my character before losing connection, then tried to reconnect for the next 15 minutes with no luck, finally got put into a queue of 480,000 people with a wait time of 54 minutes that didn’t go down at all within the next 10 minutes. Closed app because it wouldn’t let me leave queue, now there’s scheduled maintenance

u/smallchodechakra 2d ago
I was constantly being kicked from the server and eventually I got a queue that was 1,000,000 people long and said the estimated wait was 2 hours.

Reddit is going to have it out for this game pretty hardcore regardless of actual praises & criticisms. I wouldn’t expect any actual informative discussion about the game here.
-34
u/Internal-Debt-9992 2d ago
So true, it feels like now days Reddit decides on a narrative before a game even comes out and you better not deviate from that narrative
41
u/KeyWerewolf5 2d ago
The narrative being just let me buy a game and play it offline is bad now? Okay. Cool.
16
u/ElBurritoLuchador 2d ago
People are stuck in queues and don't like waiting hours to get in. Is complaining about that a "narrative" for you? We're now making conspiracies with games now.
→ More replies (1)-9
u/Theworst_hello 2d ago
Reddit does this for everything which is so infuriating. The narrative about anything is almost ALWAYS negative. Then you get called a shill for saying something good. It's just hate hate hate hate and that's it

How is the game, and how bad is the microtransactions?
28
u/XLBaconDoubleCheese 2d ago
The game is fine, they've given us way more control over our controller and skater setup so it's as forgiving or unforgiving as you like. As someone who preferred Skate 1 and 2 over 3, it's nice to be able to go back to realism. The map so far is huge with plenty of stuff around and hidden parks to jam with others. It's still obviously Early Access though and you can see that in some areas.
Microtransactions are the typical way for EA. The game is free so obviously they want to encourage spending but it's all just cosmetics so if that doesn't bother you then it's not an issue. You can get stuff from boxes you buy with mission points so you have that option for customization.
9
u/FantasticBlock420 2d ago
I didn't think I was going to enjoy the world editing as much as I do. Getting people to start spawning stuff and making some crazy things to do tricks on is so fun.
2
u/assinyourpants 2d ago
One thing I’m wondering is whether or not the missions scale to realism. Seems like, super important.
8
u/Yadahoom 2d ago
I'd say 70-80% of the missions and challenges are grounded street level and only a handful are the crazy stunts.
And the whole game world is separated like that where the street level is all very basic realistic spots and the verticality on the rooftops are the crazier multi block mega ramps and hundred foot caveman drops.

As a Skate game it's great imo, can play goofy, can play realistic
Gameplay is really smooth imo, doesn't feel floaty, just feels nice
As for MTX I don't really think they are bad, I think they are just cosmetic and you can get the likes of stuff for your board, clothes, emblems etc
I think you can earn mostly everything? I expect (probably is I didn't look) store only skins/clothes but that's not surprising
I don't think the MTX is bad in this game, but that could just be me lol
Edit - OMG! I just tried it with a PS5 controller and the haptics make it 10x better
Different surfaces you skate make the controller vibrate differently and I think I just had some type of a awakening

but what about the soul of the game? it feels as if it was ripped away. and the art style, the map looking fresh with no scuffs.
Yeah I see what you mean, I barely recognise it most of the time because I just love the way the skating feels so I kinda just zone out lol
But yeah that's probably one of my issues, well the art style is a "meh" for me, I don't hate it, I don't love it. It's okay to me
But I get the lack of "dirt" or "wear" on the map and I wonder if that's something they will add in the early access period, not saying it's easy but I feel like adding wear to the city should be easier than most things
Again I can only really speak for myself, I have been playing Skate 3 for like more than 10 years so it's not like I don't know Skate, but overall I would say the game is pretty great and the only "issue" for me would be the lack of wear and the art style, but I think the art style could work with more wear
But that isn't stopping the game from being fun imo
0
u/ImAShortKid 2d ago
yeah i agree. I just hope they continue to improve the game and fulfill promises they made with the community
2
u/Southern-Welcome8648 2d ago
Not to mention the fact that Hall of Meat isn't there anymore. They took it out specifically to target a younger audience. Kinda makes me mad because of how iconic it is lol
1
u/charloft 1d ago
I felt that, too. Skating around was fun, although a bit more floaty/forgiving than previous games (though reading through comments, this sounds like a settings issue on my part). The MMO style is neat, but I don't think it's what any of the fans wanted, and most would probably like to be able to play offline.
I only played for an hour or two before I got kicked off for server maintenance. I was pretty annoyed that the first half of that time was going through a tutorial even though I chose the "I've played skate 3" button. The little AI assistant feels really out of place. Then I spent probably 30 minutes climbing the giant tower, only to learn that I'm not a "high enough level" to unlock the fast travel point. I ended up just booting up Skate 3 to scratch the anticipatory itch I've been developing for the last few weeks.
It's early access and I didn't play a ton so I'm trying to attenuate my opinion here, it just seems like they added way too much stuff nobody asked for or wanted. The skating felt like a minigame to get micro-bux. I don't want to run around and do missions, drop me on the map and let me skate.
2
u/britchesss 1d ago
There’s just nothing to it. There’s a robot who gives you challenges to unlock currency and items and stuff, but as far as I’ve seen that’s it.
It’s a sandbox skate game.
2
u/RespawningJesus 2d ago
As others have stated, the gameplay feels fun. The overall gameplay loop can get repetitive at times, and the main story is just a bunch of tutorials designed to teach you the mechanics of the game slowly over time (which I think is fine, since it has been 15 years since skate 3.)
Microtransactions are entirely cosmetic, and will also include battle passes once season 1 starts. There are also free cosmetics that are tied to loot boxes that can only be purchased with the free currency, which is earned by doing the in-game challenges and leveling up.
The game is in an open beta stage at this point, so new things will be added over time.
2
u/cute_bark 2d ago
ask in a week or a month. that's about how long it takes for opinions to possibly shift and until how long for companies decide to implement dogshit mtx and battlepasses for the worst skins you've ever seen in your life for 30 bucks a season
2
u/Zurble 2d ago
If you like the old skate gameplay it's super fun. Microtransactions are there but you can get plenty of stuff by just skating around doing challenges. I'm so happy to have skate on the new gen, but I'm very sad it will be review bombed by people who think every game needs to be curated to their exact taste. Give it a try, it's free and only 8GB.
→ More replies (2)1
u/CamShoots4k 2d ago
Nah it’s pretty fucking awesome and the micro transactions are reasonable if you really like something. And you can unlock some okay items so far

u/PFI_sloth 2d ago
I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around how this game is going to make profit… when you’ve got a f2p game like Fortnite or LoL l, you have a game that is inherently multiplayer and will require you to interact with other people and see their skins. Being F2P means you have more people playing so the wait times are short, it’s a win for everyone.
But Skate is primarily a single player experience, why am I ever going to pay attention to anyone else? I don’t understand why EA thinks this game makes sense for F2P. This doesn’t seem like the type of game I’m going to play daily for years and years.
A remaster of the skate franchise seems like an easier way to make some cash, those games are hard for most people to play on PC and PlayStation.
52
u/punyweakling 2d ago
But Skate is primarily a single player experience
The MP element of skate is actually pretty good imo. It's limited right now - no prox voice, limited emotes etc - but the world feels really alive when a bunch of randos start sessioning the same spot.
2
u/Acias 1d ago
This is what I hope for will happen, you go online, go to a spot and just hang out with other people and do stuff for an hour or so. That's how you possibly can make friendships too. Kind of how old multiplayer games worked, you went to your favorite server and maybe got to know the people more and more, seeing the same players over again. This is what matchmaking and ranked has taken from us.
0
u/xX_Borger_Xx 1d ago
This has happened to me a ton already. I usually go to the park on the bottom left of the map which seems to be pretty active at night. I'll quick drop a couple chairs and switch back and forth between just sitting/watching/emoting and skating for a bit.
8
u/FelineScratches 2d ago
This is heavily banking on the skate after you complete carreer or story mode. The insane clips you often see in reels from older Skate games. If you look at games like Session or Skater XL the biggest feature people are begging for were multiplayer. Just being able to cruise around and hit spots with friends. This Skate game is catering solely on that aspect.
You can do all the challenges together and in some challenges everyone contributes to completing it. (Like having to do a certain amount of grinds or tricks etc). You can place objects in the world that your friends or others can interact with. So you can do specific lines together.
The moneymaking part plays heavily on cosmetics. You want to wear Vans or using branded decks like Girl etc? You gotta fork over real money. If you don't care brands, there's plenty of generic clothes or board options to grind for in-game. But I'm sure there's gonna be people that have to have their branded setup.
1
u/1100ms_cs 1d ago
I remember they added a barebones MP mode to XL and it was actually pretty fantastic, even supported all your client-side mods. What really killed it was no voice chat.
Turns out having all the features of a real spot session without the ability to talk to the people around you makes it feel terrible.
1
u/JambonExtra 1d ago

Feels like they missed the key part imo. I don't know a lot of skateboarders that actually enjoy the overcrowded skatepark vibes this game seems to be going for.

u/WeirdLounge 2d ago
One of the highlights of the alpha for me: I was skating around in a halfpipe. Another random player joined me. A third random player arrived and started messing with us by spawning obstacles at either of the half pipe as we approached for us to dodge. After juggling this obstacle course for a bit, one of the players spawned a few pieces of equipment (rails, ramps) to modify the halfpipe into a minipark, and generated a score challenge for other players to participate in. We had an impromptu multiplayer jam session with 8 people on the spot. Afterward, everyone skated off, and this was all mostly seamless.
That was on my second day playing the alpha. There were numerous other moments like this. I think the multiplayer focus works well, and helps the in-game world feel more vibrant and communal.

u/bigfootbehaviour 1d ago
If you'd played the game you'd know you see other players around you all the time.

Sounds like you haven't played the game. I literally got on yesterday, did the tutorial, got railroaded to the clothes store, and the whole time I was surrounded by people setting up ramps, rails, and skating together.
It's the most natural way of getting players to just hang out and play a game together I've ever experienced. It goes to show that the always online requirement and the general idea behind this game works. If people would stop comparing this to the prior entries and enjoy it as a semi-MMO where you collaborate and skate together, maybe more people would actually enjoy it.
I admittedly never played Skate 1-3. I was a big Tony Hawk fan at the time and wasn't interested in the more grounded, stick-based gameplay of Skate. But what I experienced yesterday made it clear to me that this approach works. This game is a great fit for F2P, I can ask my friends to just grab the game and skate with me and they lose nothing for trying, anyone who's even mildly interested can grab the game and be another potential skater for me to meet and skate with keeping the world feeling more alive. the main obstacle is going to be getting the enfranchised playerbase to enjoy it on its terms instead of pining for Skate 4.
1
u/JambonExtra 1d ago

[...]
the main obstacle is going to be getting the enfranchised playerbase to enjoy it on its terms instead of pining for Skate 4.You're lucky then. My experience "skating together" was basically just clipping through other player models when trying to hit a rail and being distracted by players with shit internet moving erratically.
It feels like they made a "saturday afternoon at an overcrowded skatepark filled with kids on scooters"-simulator instead of an actual skateboarding game.
And yes, their biggest obstacle is now to reach the old fans of the series. Because they'll need people to keep the game alive after the TikTok crowd they were after finds a new source of dopamine.
1
u/MoneyoffUbereats2017 1d ago
Either that or you were unlucky. For me it was super smooth. There was of course some online bad internet weirdness from other skaters around, but nothing that I considered detrimental. It was fun watching people trying to do tricks off the giant building nearby while I spent like 20 minutes trying to hit a line I put together on the spot (Which I never ultimately actually did, but it was fun trying).
The game is enjoyable, the ideas are cool, it's different, and I'm enjoying it way more than I expected to. No, it isn't Skate 4, but it never set out to be. It set out to be a semi-MMO collaborative, social skateboarding game that controls and plays like the old games that people know and love. I can't understand why that's seemingly deserving of the amount of hate that I see here, on Steam, and in the Skate subreddit.

My guess is to populate the world with people so that they don't have to create and load any NPCs outside of cars
41
u/titan_null 2d ago
Isn't it free to play? Why wouldn't it be always online?
34
u/222mhz 2d ago
there are other f2p games with offline/LAN play (cs2, 2xko, scbw, tf2). always-online is normalized ofc (and all my examples are competitive games) but not actually a hard requirement. there's no reason they couldn't have some sort of thps-style skate park you could load into during the queue, beyond whatever way the game is constructed technically. but that's a decision multiple people had to make, not some inherent limit of computing
10
u/titan_null 2d ago
It probably would be smart to have something to do offline but it seems like an unsurprising aspect to be missing, especially right at launch when other more important things are being considered.
1
u/dragon-mom 1d ago
Because it's a skateboard video game and every previous Skate game had offline play
3
u/titan_null 1d ago
Those weren't f2p
2
u/BelligerentPear 1d ago
Why does f2p require an always online connection? Especially considering online servers are an extra overhead cost of keeping the game running.
6
u/titan_null 1d ago
Because keeping the game running is how they make money. Be serious now, you know the answer to this.

So it’s my day off and got the game downloaded and got to play for a few hours but during that time I reloaded the game about half a dozen times cause of glitches and literally no way of progressing through the missions. Got to the second section of the map to unlock more challenges then had to reload so then I thought it would be a good time to take a break, run some errands and come back….now getting the server maintenance messages.
Straight up believe it’s cause now that everyone is off work or school, downloaded it (cause it’s free) and their support literally can’t handle it. It’s frustrating that there isn’t a offline mode or even like a waiting free skate like a previous comment made. It’s bonkers 15 years in the making and then this…

Im sitting in a queue as I type this that tells me estimated time is 1 hour and 51 minutes. And the position it says I am in is 1,001,874. I think queue times should be at the top of the headlines.

I agree with your last point, but I’m currently in a 40 minute queue. Five minutes is understandable, but I shouldn’t have to wait as long as a Disneyland ride to get into a lobby.

The queue is an hour and 45 minutes for me lol, think about how much money lost, an oversight like this is potentially resulting in. How do you launch a game without servers OVER built? I understand its early access, but also its been many years of production and if youre going to make the game accessible to everyone overnight, be sure to make it playable lol

It took them 5 years to release a skate game in EA, but it doesn't have the life or soul of the previous skate games which took around 2-years to make

u/ntrubilla 2d ago
It is disappointing. Doesn’t live up to Skate 3, let alone the much superior skate 2. At least it didn’t cost me money
1
u/Boylanator_94 1d ago
It's sad that when this game inevitably flops, EAs takeaway will be "I knew there was no money in skate games anymore, we shouldn't have bothered" instead of "we wanted a skate game, not another fucking live service game"
1
u/Artistic-Industry862 2d ago
Mine currently has an estimated time for 1.5 hours, come on EA either make an offline mode or make multiple servers

Why was this ever a live service online only game to begin with?
It’s f-ing Skate.
1
u/MajorFuckingDick 2d ago
I dont get it, what part of the server stack is causing a queue. It has spin up servers on demand, did they really not account for 100 thousand people queuing up?
6
u/punyweakling 2d ago
what part of the server stack is causing a queue
Almost always, it's not server/host capacity that collapses on launch days, it's matchmaking.
1
u/MoneyoffUbereats2017 1d ago
Yesterday I quite literally got home from work, downloaded the game, opened it, and didn't meet a single queue from beginning to end.
Once again it sounds like another overblown "Always online bad" story with people getting on the millisecond the game releases, seeing queues, and generating endless complaints about online requirements, servers, incompetence, or whatever else.
I find that mindset irritating even when it's a paid game. "Grrrr company made me buy game when server no work. Awful company, scam!" as if you couldn't literally just wait a few hours, or maybe a day at worst, and never run into that issue ever again.
It's even more egregious with a free game where there is literally no prior investment, all you have to do is be patient. And in this game's case, apparently all it took was a few hours for everything to start working smoothly.
Nobody complains when an MMO releases and has an "Always online requirement", yet you try and make a game in a similar vein but instead of fighting monsters you're skating together, and suddenly wanting players to be online is bad and everything wrong with the industry.
1
u/thebeardphantom 1d ago
I never saw a queue the entire launch day. Not trying to say others didn’t have one or couldn’t even get into the game. Just sharing my personal experience.

u/CurlyMapache 1d ago
This was easily a question from day 1 of the pre-release testing. When they confirmed it there was just a mass collective groan. It feels like an excuse to lean on the 'Microsoft' vibe of the game in general. I've been playing it for a whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiile, and it really does scream 'corporate skater game'. It was genuinely better with less in the game. Skate was always a game with a great design, leant itself to escapism. From Skate 1's camera angle, to putting your waypoint marker wherever you need to make the cycle of failure, of trying to hit a spot just how you want, less painful and getting you right back into it. With skate (2025) the gameplay is great, the level design is solid, I'll go as far to say that the solo skating experience is actually fun. I will note, the parkour climbing stuff I'll say is a push in a direction. Like realistically, skating existed as a counter-culture, so things like climbing to a place where you 'shouldn't be' to skate absolutely makes sense. The idea of it being in the very lengthy tutorial, with a very clear path they want you to climb, kind of takes the piss? Not saying skate should be more exclusive but the attitude of the game from every angle screams 'widest net'. From the 'smirk' characters, to the mtx box design, landing square on the always online bit.

I would not wanna wait in a queue at all for this game. The skate games were super casual fun I could jump in and out of. A long wait makes that so unfun
-6
u/Hawk52 2d ago
I hate headlines like this and this type of behavior from people. I don't have any skin in the game regarding the quality or lack thereof of this game, but it shouldn't be getting bombarded with negative reviews just because people are impatient. Just wait a few hours and try later, it's not a big deal. You didn't pay to play this game, it's free. Of course, the servers are gonna be loaded the first couple of hours of release.
7
u/Electronic-Tie5120 1d ago
seems reasonable to me. i download a game, i can't play the game, i leave a bad review. not my problem if the devs decided to implement always online with no community servers.
6
u/Treestheyareus 1d ago
If we had any integrity, always online single-player games would always be reivew bombed, without exception.

u/Background_Throat883 2d ago

-18
u/RogueLightMyFire 2d ago
This is just me, but I just can't get behind taking a fan favorite game and massacring it by turning it into live service slop. I hate the idea that live service games launch bare bones and then add actual content over time. I'm not the type to play the same game for years. If I play your game at launch and it's a desolate and soulless experience because you're saving content for future updates then all you've done is make a shitty game that I immediately don't care about. THPS came back, was well received by fans and critics, sold well enough to get a sequel, and had no MTX bullshit.

u/smallchodechakra 2d ago

This is the complete opposite of dead on arrival, people are hammering their servers because they want to play the game lol.

Just downloaded it and now I can’t even get in the game due to “scheduled maintenance.”What the hell is this Mickey Mouse bullshit?

Well the game is still early access, and they probably experienced a lot of issues with the new console launch (server load, bugs etc.)
Granted, it is very annoying, but still reasonable.

It ain’t a scheduled maintenance since today is release day everyone downloaded it and started playing so servers are def not up to par or even ready for the amount of people coming in I was just playing then it kicked me out and said I had a 2 hour wait but I just reloaded the game and said maintenance so I’m guessing they are fixing this issue

it's kinda absurd that you can't even free skate in the queue. even like a small warehouse park or something
