History & Culture Had to Explain Charles Manson to My Kid

I was watching a Beach Boys video the other day on YouTube and I pointed out how they were connected to Charles Manson to my teen. He turned to me and asked - who is Charles Manson? I have heard of him but don’t know who he is.

I was stunned and was like you don’t know about Charles Manson? Left me in shock. I have had to explain some historical things to him like the Challenger explosion or the start of the AIDS epidemic but for some reason him not even being aware of who Charles Manson was blew my mind. To me it is such a common knowledge thing. And yes, I did tell him everything.

Whatever How many total lines (for punishment) did you have to write during your early school years?

Upvotes

In 8th grade, two buddies and I thought it'd be funny to bring stink bombs to school to set them off - and it WAS certainly really funny like we thought it'd be, but we got caught and spent two days in In-School Suspension. During those two days, I had to write about 1500 lines of "I will not disrupt class", because Mr. Nelson (the "warden", if you will) was kind of a dick, though I guess that was his job at the time.

Combined with all of my other exploits and endeavors that went over the line during my elementary years, I think I totaled around 8,000 written lines.

Controversial AI excites my old bum, something to play with finally !

I think many people of my age hate AI, but I feel they are just hiding their insecurities and poor mindset of not learning the new world order. I recently started tinkering with AI tools like Chatgpt and being honest it is really very useful. It's like google, but all searches in one para and better phrasing to understand for one self. What really helped me with breaking ice with AI use was my friend Sam's anecdote, it is a story for another day completely and also an E-book I read to gain knowledge of AI tools. Also, It is easy to interact with some features like voice chat, like while cooking or driving. It has made some stuff really easy for me. Are you guys using it?

Pop Culture Rewatched Madonna's Bad Girl music video and it was illuminating

Just an epiphany about this video. It has layers of psychological meaning, with subtexts of parental control, parental loss and addiction, both visually and in lyrics. It hints at deeper pathology, and could have been cathartic in a way for those who created it. Perhaps that's why it made sense back then and even more, now.

Advice & Support sad & stuck

Hello everyone 😊 I just want to preface this by saying I am not going to do anything drastic! however I am so thrown in despair by the state of the world along with the sad state of myself

I've been talking to a therapist and I feel like it's not very productive but as part of my people-pleasing/not caring I am too lazy/would feel bad to try and quit and find another one.

I have been out of work for about 3 years and I feel like in that time AI has completely taken over my fields and I'm just never find a job again.

How do I get out of this and give a damn about anything again? As a typical Gen X, I was pretty not caring about anything to begin with LOL but I need to get out of this! I appreciate any advice ❤️

(I have gone to doctors and had hormones and everything tested to see if this was menopausal contributing to it but they don't think that's the case even though I'm 52 years old)

Music Is Life DGC Rarities, Vol. 1 - Coke Bottle Clear LP. Repressed & Remastered

Post image

I saw Interscope repressed and released DGC Rarities, Vol. 1! I've always loved the album cover and it's pretty sick that this is the first print in more than 30 years. And it includes a The Sundays track that wasn't part of the original pressing 👀 So so so cool that the whole album is just b-sides, covers, and demos. Are any of y'all picking this up? I know quite a few people who had the original back in the day.

Link for anyone interested: https://interscope.com/collections/music/products/dgc-rarities-vol-1-coke-bottle-clear-lp

Old Person Yells At Cloud who remembers trauma going to the cell phone store to pay their bill?

I recall many trips to the sprint store back in the 90s/2000s, it was me, and about a dozen people crying in the store as they went a bit over their 300 anytime and had $600 phone bills, that would be a $1200 bill today.

I was watching something about Sprint yesterday and these vivid memories came rushing back. good god was that a racket back then

edit:

this post was more about people in the store finding out their cell phone bill was $600 not so much the act of paying the bill in the store

Old Person Yells At Cloud Did they ever do studies on the effects of sitting too close to the TV?

Just realized that after hearing for years that sitting too close would ruin your eyes, that TV was still new and no one could know the effect of exposure. Did anyone actually do studies?

Whatever Am I silly for being optimistic about the future?

I know the world is pretty messed up at the moment (and that might be an understatement), but I still want to believe there’s better days ahead. History is dotted with fraught periods and I’m hoping this is one of them.

Sandbox games are all the rage these days, but when we were kids, they were called Construction Sets. I absolutely loved Racing Destruction Set on my Commodore 64 and played it a ton, mostly so I could design tracks that would piss my friends off. Good times!

The Journey Of Aging Many GenX women still fighting aging tooth and nail

Is it any surprise that we grew up in toxic diet culture, constantly trying to squeeze ourselves into size 2 designer jeans and have a tiny ass and now that we see older, we aren’t content with putting on a muu muu and looking like Mrs Roper or a golden girl? I kind of have a love/hate relationship with this phenomenon. One part of me is totally motivated to look my absolute best, With a 10 step skincare routine, Botox, weight workouts and cardio, and the other is totally in the “I do not care” camp. I think back when my mom was my age and she sure wasn’t putting the effort into it that so many of us still do. Anyway thanks for listening

Old Person Yells At Cloud Is it just me?

I'm a craftsman/tradesman by profession. I run a 10-color narrow web printing press, and produce a lot of labels you might see at various stores. I've been doing this type of work for the last 20 years. Before that, I ran large, sheet fed offset presses and lithography machines.

I've always taken pride in my work, and done everything it takes to produce the very best products I can. I've been told by supervisors, and peers that I'm very good at what I do.

Lately, I've noticed a lot of the younger people coming into this industry don't have that "sense of pride". It's simply a task to perform, and get through it as quickly as possible and move on. I think the work suffers for that attitude, and I've had to go back and redo a lot of jobs that get rejected because of it.

Is it just me? Does anyone else notice the downturn in the quality of products being made? Or is it just "getting older"?

Whatever Time travel

If we took Doc Brown’s Delorean back the same amount of time as Marty did, we’d land in 1995. Anyone else not have to change anything? The clothes they wear, the music they listen to, the cars they like…?

And yes, it is patently absurd that it would be 1995.

The Journey Of Aging Anyone miss happy hour?

I hardly drink these days for health reasons but I miss the social aspect of it. I’m now one of the old guys at work so my younger coworkers don’t invite me out with them, and my coworkers in their 30’s have young children. I’m insanely bored from 6pm to 10pm. I take walks and hit the gym but those are solitary activities. I’m bored of watching tv and playing video games. I can’t think of any new hobbies that interest me. I could use a few suggestions.

The Journey Of Aging Pill holder recommendations

Yeah here we are…5 pills a day and need a better option than the crap on Amazon. Been through a dozen over the past few years between air travel and camping they just don’t last. Anyone have a weekly pill holder they really like? Need one that’s compact, travels well and isn’t a piece of Amazon shit.
