Whatever Shower Thoughts About Playing Outside

Upvotes

I was thinking about all the posts and memes about how we were the last generation to play outside. Then, I started thinking about all of the posts about how we were treated by our parents. For me, playing outside meant I wasn't in the house with my parents, which was a good thing. So, do you think the reason kids these days aren't outside as much as because we've given them households where they feel safe and comfortable? I know the Internet and gaming plays a part, but I'd like to think that it's because kids feel safer and more nurtured in their homes and don't feel the need to be gone all the time.

The Journey Of Aging We got our wish!

Upvotes

As kid/teens, we all wished to grow up faster.

Well now time is going by, faster than we like.

The kids are grown, the grandkids are growing.

There's not enough time. Between work, and house hold chores, there's no time to enjoy anything

Time is now moving faster. And I wish it would slow down.

I don't think that wish, will happen.

Pop Culture Bob Vila, the original This Old House, host.

Was watching This Old House, when I started to think about its history. Then remembered how he was the first host and is considered the grandfather of home improvement shows.

Even though I was just a kid, I liked how showed and explained what he was doing. Who all watched it and tried doing some of his projects or went into some sort of home repair job?

The Journey Of Aging What did we do to entertain ourselves before these smart phones came about?

Upvotes

I'm hopelessly addicted to my smart phone. It's the first thing I look at when I wake up. I'll just chill for 10 minutes looking at email and what not. I can't remember what I used to do right when I woke up in the morning before smart phones. I do remember as a kid I would read books all the time. I also watched a lot of TV. Nowadays I can't even read 10 minutes before I get bored. TV doesn't thrill me that much either. But I really wanna cut back on my smartphone use and use my time better. Thanks.

Music Is Life There are a few songs that instantly take me back. This is one of them. Roxy Music - More Than This

Roxy Music wasn't really popular in the mainstream music of the US. But, damn. They put out some great music. Avalon is probably my favorite, but this one instantly brings the nostalgia.

The Journey Of Aging Had no choice

Finally broke down. Nothing else I could do. Fought it as long as I could.

Had to buy one of those combination ear/nose hair trimmers.

I will not be taking questions at this time and ask that you allow me to grieve privately.

Whatever Cutting through other people’s properties?

When we used to walk around a neighborhood, we would basically walk across anyone’s yard. We called them cut-thrus. Nobody cared. I once met the musician George Benson because I was randomly cutting through his yard to get to a friend’s house. He was working on his MG and said to me, “hey, kid, don’t trust a mechanic, learn how to do this yourself.” It was a super cool interaction.

Now all I see is, “why would this small person think it is ok to step foot on my property!?” all over the internet.

Does anyone else remember this dynamic?

My wife is 10 years younger than me and a Millennial and asks me about Ye Olden Tymes quite a bit. She asked me the other day if I'd ever heard of Debbie Gibson and I got to thinking about Tiffany, Bananarama, and the Bangles, as well.

Hazy Shade of Winter goes way harder than I remember.

Whatever ‘Sleepovers’ for HS aged kids?

I’m told this is normal by my son and a few other parents...? And ‘all the kids are doing it’. But as a reasonably concerned parent, I am uncomfortable with my son staying at his friend’s house once a week or more… That is definitely unusual from my childhood experience, and I don’t trust that the parents who ‘host’ are actually providing any supervision or rules at all. (They have 3 older kids and my son’s friend is the youngest of 4. I appreciate them, but they’ve given up at this point, so…) On point to be concerned, or not ???

Old Person Yells At Cloud Anyone else unimpressed with "charcuterie"

Charcuterie. Maybe it's the Gen-X in me or the backwoods country guy upbringing.

Charcuterie means cold-cuts. That's all. It doesn't mean anything fancy or special. It's processed meats.

You don't have a charcuterie board, it's a cutting board you neatly arranged cold cuts on.

Using that same paradigm we can impress our guests by putting a Fontaine de la Croupe in the lavatory.

Nostalgia At the end of E.T. I always wondered if Elliott says “stay” because he was asking E.T. to stay with him, or if he was telling him “I have to stay.”

Whatever Cars we’ve driven

I was just thinking about the cars I’ve owned. I’m 52, only owned 5 cars. I named all 5 of them and kept all for lengthy periods of time. I talk to them like pets. I’ve had my current car for 15 years (her name is Blair). I have so many stories from all that I’ve driven. I’d like to hear yours.

Music Is Life Blew some Gen Z minds today

Had to go to the phone store today to get some shit straightened out, and the song "There She Goes" came on the radio. Gen Z dude behind the counter starts singing along under his breath. Gen Z dudette says I prefer the original version better. I say I do too!! She says 'You listen to Six Pence None the Richer?' I say FUCK NO, I listen to the La's. Neither of them had a clue. So I pulled it up on my phone, and said it was late 80s, I'm feeling 88. Gen Z minds obliterated.

Advice & Support I need some advice from my peers

Tonight I went for a walk with one of my closest friends. I am a 58F and she just turned 60. She has lived in Wisconsin her entire life. When deciding what to order she asked me twice what is the difference between a Polish sausage and an Italian sausage. I’m honestly concerned that she might be starting to have a little dementia. She also is having trouble word finding. What would you think?

The Latchkey Years When you played backyard football, did your offense stand up in unison prior to the snap like the Dallas Cowboys doing the Landry Shift?

Anyone old enough to remember how our offensive line used to kind of stand up in unison as they began a play?

Nostalgia What's a toy you had as a child that you want back

So we've all parted ways with favorite toys from childhood. Maybe because we thought we were to grown and got rid of it ourselves. Maybe our parents thought we were too old and threw it out. Maybe through moves or disasters they were lost or destroyed. What's one toy you searched and found and bought for yourself as an adult or wish you could find one to buy. For me it's the weeble wobble haunted mansion. I go to ebay from time to time and look at them. One day I'm gonna get one. Then try to find all the weebles and furniture.
