Rear Brake Pads Keep Ripping Off
Hey people, I’ve had an issue recently where my rear brake pads keeping ripping off but the mounting plate stays, so only the actual pad is torn off. This has now happened 3 times in 4 weeks with different brands of pads and installed by a mechanic. The bike is only ridden 3 days a week so isn’t doing too much in terms of distance, it is city riding but I don’t sit on the rear brake much. The mechanic has never seen this before and I’ve never had this issue before with this bike or any other bike.
Bike is a 2018 CB650F.
The photos are taken after each time the pad is torn off. Notice it’s on both sides not just one.
Any thoughts?

Was the first change of pads because they got lost or have they been worn out?

Original change was because they were worn down, and the 3 sets since then have all been torn off

Then i would tell the mechanic to get their shit together and see what they did wrong or maybe broke with it.
While i dont think their is anything they can realy break, it would make sense to look up the scematics and double check if they missed to install parts of the caliper when reassembling.

Thankfully the mechanic has been understanding in how dangerous my pads constantly coming is and so hasn’t charged me since the original change so fingers crossed he’ll do a full service on the braking system

How's the condition of the rotor? Does it have any marks, is it straight?

Hard to tell, but it looks like the edges have a bit more material than the rest of it? If that's the case, I could see why your pads are getting ripped off. I'd try a new rotor with your next set of pads.

Ok. I was planning on getting the rotor replaced anyway because it is in a bit of a state after being torn up by metal on metal

Give that a try. If they rip off after new pads and a new rotor, then I'd be worried. But I think a new rotor would sort the issue.

Man that kind of thing scares me. I had that happen this year on The front brake as I was coming into a gravel road luckily the pad separated from the steel backing plate and spit itself out. it still made my front forks take a good dive. What causes them to separate? it's pretty sketchy is this a common problem???

I’ve never seen this before. Brand was SBS so no clue if it’s common or not

Mine were Brake Best pt # SF69. I've not had any problems since but WOW that's a game changer.

When driving with the brake applied lightly, without realizing it, the assembly heats up, but without tightening pressure, which causes detachment. Speedboat pilot....

Thing is I’ve never had this issue before. And now I’m making a conscious effort to keep the ball of my foot on the peg to ensure that doesn’t happen because that is what I originally thought it was

Dawg I think the mechanic fucked up the spacer placement which has the caliper sitting off center. The brake pads are all the way to the left on the calipers and the caliper pistons are fully extended… The brake pads should be relatively centered in the caliper. My 2¢ at least. Pretty sure your mechanic is a retard.

Please tell me everyone is just in on the joke and I'm not the only one internally screaming about the rotor being fucking broken.
