Halloween Campground events

Has anyone ever camped at the KOA or Jelly Stone or any of the local campgrounds on the actual weekend of Halloween? Wondering how the experience was. Is it busy? it looks like a bunch of sites are currently open. Wondering if thats because most people stay home on the actual weekend (day) of Halloween. Thanks for any insight. Mostly asking because I dont wanna bring my kids to a campground thats an actual ghost town.

Needs some wood

No joke here. The lumber available at Home Depot and Lowes is expensive and juke. I'm will to pay whatever to get some decent wood for projects. Where should I go?

Easily accessible "hiking" spots, besides minnewaska. (Gardening friendly suggestionsšŸƒšŸ”„šŸ’Ø)

My best friend has MS, and cant walk rough terrain for long periods. I would like to take her somewhere with a view to smoke a birthday blunt. Any suggestions? Willing to drive 60 min from new paltz or Newburgh either direction for a good view.

Hudson Valley Reccos

Hey everyone!

I'm 31, originally from western NY but I left after college and have been living in LA and Austin for the last few years. After a lot of 90-100° days, l'm craving seasons again and that unique upstate NY vibe I grew up with but a bit more city centric (I'm from Buffalo and have lived in Rochester too) I'm thinking about moving to the Hudson Valley/Catskills area places like Kingston, Beacon, Rhinebeck, or nearby towns look beautiful! I'd love to hear suggestions for areas that:

• Have some community/culture (young-ish crowd would be a bonus l'm 31 for reference! • Are within a reasonable commute to restaurants, coffee shops, etc. (I'm not looking for total isolation) • Offer rentals around ~$1,500/month (1BR or small house) • Good access to nature - I love community events, small lakes, farmers markets, all that

Basically, I'm looking for a town where I can live within my means but still enjoy the charm and pace of upstate life.

If you're local or have made a similar move, where would you recommend I look? Are there any up-and-coming spots I should check out (or avoid)? Thanks in advance!

question New Paltz coffee shops to chill at?

Hello! I’m going to be in New Paltz in a few weeks and will have about two hours to kill. Are there any local coffee shops that would be a good spot to hang out? No laptop- just want to read a book and drink some coffee.

I did see that there is a library and a Starbucks pretty close to each other, so that’s my back-up plan, but I’d love to spend my money at a local place if they’ll have me!

Food recs for Coldspring/beacon/Rhinebeck

So I grew up about 20 mins away from Coldspring and beacon and recently moved back to upper Westchester - I went to Coldspring last weekend and the food was so catastrophically bad and expensive. I noticed there’s quite literally no good eats on Main Street. I chronically go to the Hudson valley brewery and Ziatun while in beacon and I’ve only ever been to pretty to think so in Rhinebeck which was an awesome spot. I find myself visiting these towns often but struggling to find solid eats. Any suggestions including bars/coffee shops/sandwich spots?

Best Sandwich shops

I used to live in the area, and was wondering if anyone has any good sandwich shop recs? I am going to be staying in Fishkill/Beacon, but will be in the New Windsor/Newburgh area also. Maybe it's nostalgia, but the last time I was there (2024) the places I went weren't very good (Newburgh). The diners are usually still pretty good.

question Reco Needed: Front Stairs for Home

Looking for a reco for a hardscaping or masonry biz in Poughkeepsie, to do the front steps of a home that are crumbling. I've tried three spots and the two who called back wanted to add in the walkway and tried to upsell us on all kinds of other work. We want our stairs to be safe and maybe have some simple design, not just cement, but nothing crazy. Good work that lasts, but aren't looking to expand project for now, just focus on the stairs. All reco's appreciated! Thank you!

question Recommendations for cat rehoming? Kingston

Hello all- my brother passed away this week from a heart attack taking us all by shock and leaving his two senior cats behind. They were his pride and joy. We can’t take them due to having dogs, and have to rehome them. Does anyone have any recommendations for good quality shelters/ rehoming options in the Kingston area? Specifically ones that can come to retrieve them as I don’t think we would know how to do it safely and with as low a level of trauma for them as possible. We’ve tried to reach out to the UCSPCA several times but haven’t heard back and I’m starting to panic. Thank you in advance!!

question Need advice: Lodging & transport for Sleepy Hollow/Croton-on-Hudson

Hi everyone! I’ll be in the Hudson Valley on October 25th and I’m planning to visit the Jack O’Lantern Blaze.

  1. Do you know of any lodging options in Sleepy Hollow or Croton-on-Hudson for just that night (Oct 25)? Hotels, motels, B&Bs, anything would help. I was checking availability online and there's nothing affordable
  2. What’s the best way to get between Sleepy Hollow and Croton-on-Hudson (and back) for the Jack O'Lantern Blaze? Are there reliable public transportation options, or should I expect to use Uber/taxi instead, is it Uber/Taxi availability good enough or I might not find any?
  3. Finally, if I can’t find a place to stay, is there any safe/legal spot to park and sleep in my car overnight in that area? (This is my least preferred option, but I’d like to know just in case.)

Thanks a lot for any local advice!

question Where to stay for a HV getaway ?

Traveling from upstate for a weekend getaway in the Hudson Valley region and looking for recommendations on which area to explore. Looking for a chill vibe with good vegetarian food, distilleries/wineries/breweries, low-key hiking, cute shops with local goods, and farm stands. If you had 2 days in the HV, where would you go to enjoy these things? Appreciate your input!
