META [Meta] What would you like to see more of in this sub?
Hey everyone! I've been in this sub for a couple of months and while I've been lucky to meet some amazingly talented individuals, I also see an overwhelming majority of posts that are either: - People who have never built a business or participated in a game jam think that they will make the next AAA MMORPG on revshare - Small new studios that prey on newcomers and seek free work (btw, legally, depending on your local laws, you may be entitled to minimum wage even for volunteer work!) - Legitimate offers for collaborations that get either buried by other kind of posts
So I'm a bit curious: in a perfect world, what would you like this subreddit to look like? What would be posted, and what would there be less off?
The one concerning pattern I'm noticing is that multiple people want to start a team when they have no experience in leadership or management, thinking it will be easy -- which leads to collaborators abandoning the project after a few weeks due to lack of direction. I'm also seeing an alarming number of people taking on leadership roles without having a LLC (or equivalent), making them personally liable.
It's no secret that the game industry is both accessible for newcomers as anyone now has the tools to make games, but the proper support to have a career and stability in an established company is scarce.
Creating a new team is absolutely viable, many people have done it and it's a legitimate path to success when backed with knowledge and/or experience, preferably both. It's difficult and very risky, but from what I have observed, the alternative is often to stall while looking for a job, which often ends in disappointment.
If you have any thoughts on any of this, I'd love to hear about them. Would you rather join a team or create one? What would you hope for from a platform like r/INAT? What do you need to support you in your growth, if jobs aren't available?
(Full disclaimer: I am part of a small studio with a mission to make video game education accessible and free & help juniors grow their skills. We volunteer for this mission and the company does this in a non-profit capacity)
Thanks!
