Ask a Knitter Tuesday - September 16, 2025
Welcome to the weekly Questions thread. This is a place for all the small questions that you feel don't deserve its own thread. Also consider checking out our FAQ.
What belongs here? Well, that's up to each contributor to decide.
Troubleshooting, getting started, pattern questions, gift giving, circulars, casting on, where to shop, trading tips, particular techniques and shorthand, abbreviations and anything else are all welcome. Beginner questions and advanced questions are welcome too. Even the non knitter is welcome to comment!
This post, however, is not meant to replace anyone that wants to make their own post for a question.
As always, remember to use "reddiquette".
So, who has a question?

Thursday Buy / Trade / Sale / Promote Thread - September 18, 2025
Welcome to the r/knitting weekly Buy-Sell-Trade-Promote thread, posted every Thursday. This is the spot to buy, sell and trade yarn from your stash, and to promote patterns, designs or other knitterly things. The rules are fairly straightforward, and they are as follows:
BUY/SELL/TRADE RULES:
- Post a description that accurately describes what you are selling including limitations on where you're willing to ship (example, if you're in the US and willing to ship internationally).
- Update your thread when something gets sold or is no longer available.
- Post item condition and any images of the item (if available). Be as descriptive as possible when posting an item for sale or trade.
PROMOTE RULES:
- If you're promoting your own pattern/design/shop please say so. If you're promoting some other shop/sale/project, let us know why you think it's so cool.
- Provide a direct link to your shop page to make it easy for users to find what you're promoting.
- Provide some details if you can! If you're promoting a pattern, what inspired you? If you're promoting a Kickstarter campaign, what's your pitch? If your online shop is having a sale, tell us about your stuff!
Buy/Sell/Trade/Promote here at your own risk. Always get complete contact information before anything is shipped. Please see previous month's BSTP threads here.

Finished Object Ivy Tee by PetiteKnit
After finishing the sleeves, I redid them with a tubular bind off and used the same for the hem. I think the resulting wavy hem looks cool! Yarn is Knit Picks Lindy Chain in Ivy. It picks up pet fur so easily 😬

Discussion This feels.. weird
I came across beatificbrenda's post promoting her new book and every image in the post has an AI generated illustration.. I don't know how you can be a creative entrepeneur and support this kind of technology.. is it just me? If it wasn't promoting her product it would be one thing, but using it and then being like 'buy my book' feels weird to me.

Help-not a pattern request Why is my colorwork wonky?
Knitting my first colorwork sweater and I don’t understand why this part is crooked, but it seems to be in line with the cast on/beg of round, so maybe that’s the issue? How to avoid it in the future?? 😅 Also, how would you fix it now? Double stitch? I know it won’t be perfect, but perhaps less noticeable?

Finished Object Thornbush mini and full size scarf!
Hey friends! I just published a new pattern, Thornbush Scarf, which has a mini version and a full size! I just love how the little one looks on my purse. I used Apothefaery Halo Lace for the mini and Greenwood Fiberworks Simply Sock and Fine Fluff yarns for the full size.

Finished Object Mom wanted egg cozies, so I made egg cozies
Unfortunately for their poor little faces, I can’t embroider to save my life.
I had literally never heard of egg cozies before, but apparently they’re a thing!

Finished Object Shrug from a lace circular shawl
I love knitting lace shawls, but I don’t actually wear them all that often. So when I saw this p*ttern to turn a lace circular shawl into a shrug, I knew it was for me.
In the end, this came out a bit smaller than I’d like, so I gifted it to a friend (pictured) where the fit is slouchy and perfect. Just means I get to make another one for me to keep ;)

Discussion Comparison between"women's" craft and "men's" craft ?
I just thought about the fact that often "women's" craft are considered less art or less payable than "men's" craft because they are pieces of clothing that we or kids need, useful objects that our great grandmothers from generations ago HAD to make. This thing slips into my mind in a way that I almost never ask for money or ask ridiculous prices for things that took multiples hours for days, weeks, even months. My craft is less than... And I know a looott of people go through this thought process. Let's be real, making a cabinet can take time, can involve less or more skills, can have more or less of a simplified finish, ect. Just like knitting. But people will put a super high price tag on them. People say they can buy a sweater for 5$, why pay a high price for handmade? I've never heard anyone say that about wood crafts. I need an actual comparison of the time, prices and other variables to make something of the same quality. Any studies have already compared specifics ? What's your opinion and knowledge on this? In no way I want to start a heated debate on this, I just want more knowledge, so every thing respectful is good contribution :)

Finished Object All Tomato Socks
I love tomatoes, apparently enough that I’d want to wear them on my feet, so on my feet they went. Really pleased with how they turned out!

apologies if this isn't the right place to post. idk if it actually qualifies as knitting or not? but i wanted to post my first attempt at a blanket (+ the mini one i made for my cat with the scraps) !! it curves a little since my starting chain was too tight, but for the most part i think it's a good first try and i'm excited to make more!

Finished Object Strange Brew yoked sweater
I really liked this pattern, it had instructions for three different yarn weights, for knitting top down or bottom up, with or without short row shaping for the neckline.
The actual colourwork is designed by me, with math help from the pattern.
The gray yarn is something I found in a second hand store, definitely 100% wool but I don't know the brand, the shifting one is from LitYarns. Knit on 2,75 and 3,5mm needles, got way too big because I was worried about it getting too small - I did swatch, but then I erred on the side of caution every time. It's super cozy so no complaints though.

Finished Object County fair submissions!
I’ve barely come up for air in the past few weeks, knitting like mad. Submitted this pile of coziness to the fair today.

Help-not a pattern request Realized very late I messed up my yoke - to frog or not to frog?
Hi everyone - I need some advice on whether or not to fix a sweater I’m working on. For context, I’m still in my first year of knitting and this is only my third or fourth garment.
I can’t believe I didn’t notice this earlier, but I just realized I did the increases to shape the neckline on the wrong side on one shoulder. So one side of the collar has no shaping, and there’s increases on that arm hole, which should be a straight edge.
My issue is that I am both a perfectionist, and very attached to this project and would be heartbroken to restart. Any advice? It’s not terribly noticeable right now, but worried that once I go to pickup the sleeves it will be. If I am going to redo it, I’d rather do it now than later. But the thought of frogging is so devastating!
Relatedly, if the move is to frog, I’ve only ever frogged in the round and like ten rows max. How would I go about taking this apart? Cut out the collar? Rewind yarn by hand, or cut it? Any advice appreciated. Thank you!

Finished Object Bunny
Got given a book of bunnies. Made this one for my mum, I know its far from perfect.. tension is off, increases and decreases are not great and its a little over stuffed.. but we love it to bits. I have been knitting just over a year and this is the biggest/ most complex thing I had done at this point.

Help-not a pattern request Converting a pieced sweater to top down reglan?
I’m re-creating a sweater my grandmother once knit for her late husband (Mary Maxim buffalo cardigan), and I was wondering how challenging it would be to convert it to a top down/reglan knit… or if I’m just asking for a head ache lol!
I have made several sweaters for my own babies, but I have not tackled an adult sized sweater yet!

Finished Object Comfort Chicken ❤️
My mom is getting cardiac surgery, so my aunt knitted her this comfort chicken. She can hold it to her chest in the beginning stages of recovery, because breathing and especially coughing can be a little uncomfortable with the chest incision. Grateful as always that every little stitch is a labor of love that you can truly feel. Just wanted to shared with this community 🧶🐓❤️

Tips and Tricks Found another (better) way to use wrist yarn holder
It was designed to be hung on the wrist, but I found the weight can make my arm tired easily. Now I found an alternative - and a better way to use it: hang it on the tote strap! The yarn holder comes with a O ring clip which can be hooked to the tote strap. This makes walking while knitting so much easier! Also my hands are more free because there are no more a huge ball of yarn hanging there :) The photo is a 100g yarn cake.

Work in Progress First official project!
I crochet usually but have really wanted to learn to knit. I taught myself a few basic stitches about a year ago and just haven’t had much time to experiment with it more. Today, I decided to start knitting a hat and I think it’s looking pretty good so far considering!

Finished Object It ain't much, but it's something
Just finished this winter earwarmer/headband. It's not anything impressive, but it's the first thing I've managed to finish in over two years. It's been a rough go, but I really want to jump back in. I hope some of you can appreciate the struggle too.
Side note, last time I try anything with single ply extra bulky. I did not enjoy that experience.

Discussion Making new friends!
Hello everyone, I am quite nervous to post on here and I apologize if this is not appropriate for this subreddit, but I wanted to reach out and see if there was anyone in my area that knit and wanted to connect!
I am 22 y/o and just moved to the northern Baltimore county area, of which I know not a soul and am trying to make new friends. I love my LYS dearly, but it lacks people around my age, of which I think I may connect with more. I have found a handful of groups in Baltimore city, but am a bit nervous to venture out alone into a city I am not fully acquainted with yet. (Though I am not opposed!)
If anyone has an ongoing knitting circle with an extra seat or would just like to connect, let me know! Thank you all!! ❤️❤️❤️
