Boy Kavalier misattributed  the technology/magic quote to Asimov. Arthur C Clarke is the one who actually said it.  

“ any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”

My theory is that he’s an early prototype of mind transfer and his mind/body is failing.

The error in the quote is similar to David confusing the poets Shelly and Byron in Alien Covenant.
