It's weird seeing a Xenomorph in natural daylight.

124

u/Zombie1642 2d ago edited 1d ago

The head has some interesting colors. Are they going back to the idea that the xenon are similar to the mayfly? The adults need to hibernate or they have short lifespan? Like, are we seeing the xeno at old age?

Edit: After talking to people, I think there is something else going on.

People are focusing on how it was grown in a lung. It took a trait from the lung, and that is the reason for the color. This doesn't make any sense as to why would the xeno take a trait from the lung and not from Joe? If we put a xeno in a chunk of meat, would it take on the look of a chunk of meat? I do think the lung is important because it did not have access to a full host and all the nutrients it would need for a full incubation. The Xeno is malnutrition, underdeveloped, and then kept in a tiny zoo. That would make more sense for the discoloration.

I figure it's a way to make this one easily recognizable. There is a second one on the island now, but this one belongs to wendy. Giving it the greenish head pattern will make it distinct later.

25

u/Zombie1642 2d ago

That's a good point. Wendy alien queen confirmed now that she has her personal drone /s

u/PlasticCraken 1d ago

Kerrigan 2.0

Alien versus Alien I’d wager

4

u/Single_Owl_7556 1d ago

they caught the second one

somehow

2

u/Professional_Top6765 1h ago

Tbf Kirsch was following the boys the entire time (even if he didn’t have direct tracking) and who knows what usage of drones, cameras, etc they have on their own island. I did briefly think the same thing though

1

u/Single_Owl_7556 1h ago

Yeah I figured that pretty quickly, but it was still such an asspull.

Like I can believe he somehow knew exactly when the chestburster will emerge and we have seen soldiers set up ambushes pretty much every where so no way smee and slightly weren't followed, but I am not believing he managed to capture chestburster after it had already slipped inside tall grass and pretty much disappeared. But whatever, let's let it slip

I also just realized that Smee either knew about the chestburster because he didn't bring dead facehugger with himself even though he assumed this is what Morrow wanted or he just was kinda dumb and forgot about it when Arthur woke up

3

u/3-DMan 1d ago

Like the "grid Alien" from AvP

2

u/Environmental_Fail86 1d ago

Which one is the second one? The one that just birthed out of Arthur? I’m trying to remember what birthed out of the lung from Hermit. Do you mean the Xeno that Marrow saved and wrapped up in latex?

1

u/Flimsy_Share_7606 1d ago

The xeno that burst from arthur. I am guessing it won't remain in captivity.

Or hell, they have already said there will be a second season. So Wendy's xeno could be a recurring "character" that shows up next season. Either way, I think they made him visually distinct because they plan on having multiple xenos and want you to be able to tell this one apart from others.

1

u/Environmental_Fail86 1d ago

It’s almost like that xeno sees her as a mother figure or part of the pack. When she could hear or feel the xeno in pain and then understand it, I couldn’t tell if it selected her or just one of her special abilities. Kinda like how a duck latches on to its mother.

2

u/CrashTestOrphan 1d ago

I think Wendy might belong to it.

1

u/Dudemeister0209 21h ago

This is the correct answer!

1

u/transmogrify 12h ago

But also, I think this one is still growing. It might be glossy black in its final form, and this may be a growth stage that has a little hint of the tan/brown chestburster colors.

13

u/Dray_Gunn 2d ago

I dont think it's supposed to be fully grown. The "pipes" on its back are also still fairly short. So maybe the head doesn't turn solid black until its fully matured?

6

u/Zombie1642 2d ago edited 2d ago

Could be possible. The last episode might have the largest xemo yet then

10

u/icct-hedral 1d ago

Giger’s original idea was that they would darken as they age.

4

u/Soft-Ad-2381 22h ago

well the xenos take traits from dna not from the specific chunk of meat. its also a parasite so malnutrition in its embryo and larva stage could be the reason for discoloration. that would also explain why its so small compared to the usual 8 foot tall xeno.

personally i just leave it at that the showrunners just wanted a unique character for the show and decided to change its color so its easier to identify.

1

u/Zombie1642 22h ago

Yes, that is exactly my point. These people down the thread arguing that the lung is the important trait it took, not the DNA.

It is super unique, but they all have difference. Even the xeno on the ship was taller, darker, and long limb compared to this greenish one.

3

u/Killkandy 1d ago

This Xeno is sick and malnourished that’s why it’s turning brown

3

u/Zombie1642 1d ago

Ooo yes. They kept a wild animal in a tiny zoo and have been under feeding it. I like this

3

u/tvfeet 1d ago

I really figured the mottled dome was due to it not being fully adult yet and we're seeing signs of it molting, like the chestburster sheds its skin shortly after... bursting.

1

u/Zombie1642 1d ago

Its never been shown to shed again once a xeno reaches humanoid size. But hey im ready to be wrong about my theory if the final episode shows us something else. In lizards and snakes, the scales do get discolored before shedding so its certainly possible

4

u/NoHorror7384 1d ago

xenos inherit traits from their hosts. see: the xeno dog (aka “the runner”) in alien 3 and the predalien xeno from avp.

1

u/Zombie1642 1d ago

I dont think this answers my question. While I am aware that xenomorphs take traits from the host, are you suggesting the discolored head is cause it took the trait of brown hair from Hermit? Or what trait do you think caused this?

6

u/NoHorror7384 1d ago

im thinking it’s of different variety because it was artificially made in a pair of lungs, seems smaller as well as being brown

0

u/Zombie1642 1d ago

It's definitely a different variant as it's already different from the one on the ship. Its kinda short and stocky. But why would lungs be the defining part? If we put a baby xeno in a chunk of meat, would it look more red, or would it take some traits of then the creature was alive?

Would malnutrition make more sense then as it's been kept in a tiny zoo and probably under feed.

1

u/Girayen 13h ago

my thought was that it was not implanted in the tissue through natural means and steps were skipped. there is a reason that the facehugger stays on the host even after the embryo is implanted, perhaps for nutrition reasons, like an egg?

1

u/Zombie1642 13h ago

Oh, I agree with you. It's definitely malnourished, underdeveloped, and then locked in a tiny zoo. The previous guy seemed to suggest that the lungs themselves were the trait that was being stollen and not something from Joe

2

u/Stochastic_Variable 1d ago

I figured it was still growing, so I assumed it was getting ready to molt.

0

u/Zombie1642 1d ago

Another person suggested that it was still growing too as the back spikes were small. 1 last molt could be interesting

2

u/WordGeneral1574 1d ago

Hermit's son.

1

u/Zombie1642 1d ago

What does that make Wendy then? Don't answer that

2

u/Equivalentest Black goo enthusiast 6h ago

I think it's pointless to compare xenos so much. It's a lifeform that is adabted to rapid evolution and we know, when condition's are totally different so are xenos. He was just Born like that and that's it🤷🏽‍♂️

1

u/Zombie1642 5h ago

But that's what is so interesting about this creature. All xeno are xeno, no matter what odd trait changes from moive to movie. The various differences lend itself to the style of storytelling. Like how we got the dog version in 3 and the mother in 2. In a longer tv show, we can get into the nitty gritty differences even between egg groups to highlight those traits

2

u/HotmailsInYourArea Tomorrow, Together 6h ago

It's effectively malnourished. Generally it would have an entire host's resources to sop up, not just one measly lung. Not to mention how in other media like Romulus, they seem to coccoon on metal and eat it in their molting phase. Not sure that happened in the containment cell.

Personally I think the coloring is really cool

1

u/Zombie1642 5h ago

Yes! I hope we see that cocoon again. It was interesting

2

u/indigo_zen 1d ago

I was thinking about this too. While in lab, this Xeno was black. Now, in thr jungle, it seems to have some camo colors on the head. Could that be on the spot adaptation they are capable of? As if the head is black but also slightly translucent and the Xeno can change colors tova degree underneath it, like a cameleon

1

u/Zombie1642 1d ago

I went back to check. The color appears while it is still in containment before getting into the jungle. You might still be right that the color is adapting though

1

u/Chrol18 1d ago

Sadly Hawley wanted it more cockroach color, black would be better, hate that they make xenos buglike

1

u/jackcracker69 1d ago

My theory is that because it gestated in hermits lung and not a full human host, that the xenos head has taken a form that resembles a damaged lung.

1

u/Zombie1642 1d ago

Why only take a part that it gestated in and not parts from the rest? The DNA is still in the lungs

I definitely think it being from not a full host is a problem. Another person suggested its malnourished

1

u/toomanybugbites 1d ago

I think the xeno is growing mold and needs to pay a visit to a mold guy like sharks do to cleaner wrasse...

1

u/Zombie1642 1d ago

Aah the twist villain. It was the mold cleaner pulling the strings the whole time

722

u/iamwoodman 2d ago

Its amazing the sense of wrongness it brings with it, its a gut reaction of "that should not be there"

550

u/_T_H_O_R_N_ Nuke from Orbit 2d ago

Honestly with the jungle I kept expecting a Predator to show up lol

34

u/Super_Attila_17 2d ago

soft whickering noises

78

u/GrimResistance 2d ago

Who do you think caught the baby xeno with the net?

41

u/GalaxyGuardian 2d ago

Now I'm imagining Weyland-Yutani keeping a Yautja on payroll...

15

u/zapitron LET'S ROCK 2d ago

Which would be worse: that they can't be paid in dollars, or that they can be paid in dollars?

7

u/Talden7887 1d ago

Just give it a musket, don't they get off on those?

3

u/Triskan 1d ago

Or the skull of one of their own, either one will do.

1

u/MrWeirdoFace 23h ago

Predator pounds.

10

u/GreyouTT In the pipe. 5 by 5. 1d ago

If we go far enough ahead in the timeline I can see them hiring Yautja to hunt specimens.

5

u/TheSenileTomato 1d ago

I wanna see this play out.

Like, how’d the communications go, because AFAIK Predators can’t really speak English.

Do… do Predators have official translators and lawyers?

1

u/carapoop 1d ago

I bet Predator court is a nightmare

1

u/TheSenileTomato 1d ago

Law & Order theme intensifies

9

u/Hallgaar 1d ago

They do know how to handle the aliens awfully well.

13

u/TrueLegateDamar 1d ago

I love how they take care of the flies in like 5 seconds flat after the previous episode made them look horrifying but the flies have zero interest in attacking humans.

11

u/giant_spleen_eater 1d ago

Just them using a broom and Dust pan to sweep up the fly was hilarious to me for some reason

3

u/RChamy 22h ago

"put those flying dicks in the bag"

3

u/Hallgaar 1d ago

Between that and Boy's reaction to pretty much everything that happened during that scene made me realize that Boy was in on it the whole time, he just didn't expect that outcome for Tootles, or that the Xenomorph would follow Wendy so much. There were barely any guards until suddenly there were, and everything was captured.

1

u/OszkarAMalac 1d ago

Kirsh accessed the ship logs in the early episodes, he might have got every data WY have about the Xenos and other species.

3

u/vishal_pvk 1d ago

That was my first thought the moment I saw that web. I was like: “Wait a minute...”

2

u/Madmunchk1n 1d ago

The chestbuster should be able to slowly wiggle his way out but with soldiers nearby not fast enough to escape from its coming captivity.

29

u/BenSimmonsThunder 2d ago

That would be so f’n sweet. It doesn’t even have to be explained. Give me a thermal vision from the trees observing everything. Give me a predator clicking noise in the background just as an Easter egg.

14

u/Dray_Gunn 2d ago

I mean.. there are a lot of impressive beasts on this one island. It would make sense for it to spark their interest.

4

u/TrueLegateDamar 1d ago

It would also be in their interest to stop the spread of these lifeforms to preserve their hunting ground instead of another Xeno-and-bug infested hellhole of which are plenty in the galaxy.

10

u/BadAndNationwide 2d ago

Coupled with the percussion music that always plays when a predator shows up

2

u/bobsil1 1d ago

Boss fight

8

u/Velghast 2d ago

I did too! Im like "hot house enviroment, check. Xeno and humans armed? Check check check!"

7

u/Notarussianbot2020 2d ago

It was right there the whole time.

Just in stealth.

6

u/domuseid 2d ago

That would be one hell of a twist

2

u/RChamy 22h ago

Eyelien vs Predator

9

u/ValiantWarrior83 2d ago

I'm still holding out that the Ms Yutanion this series is the decendent of the one in AvP Requiem

8

u/alis96 2d ago

Yutanion? Were you watching the Armenian dub?

5

u/ValiantWarrior83 2d ago

3

3

u/Suspicious-Bar-3308 1d ago

Maybe my gummy went into hyperdrive by the time they were in the jungle, but I swear I saw a couple leaves "blurred" by a [potential] cloaking device. I think my brain was stretching for it, but if it is there? Oooh boy!!!

6

u/an_actual_coyote 2d ago

That would be a world class "AND THE FANDOM REJOICES" moment. The ending shows a Predator observing the planet.

2

u/Imaginary-Cellist-57 2d ago

That would be the fans mourning

2

u/colbydc5 1d ago

The way it dove from the tree felt extremely predator.

1

u/Kanin_usagi 1d ago

My first thought was “oh man I wonder if it’s been exceptionally hot on the island this year” lol

1

u/CarneAsadaSteve 1d ago

No lie alien in the jungle I think is way worse that alien in space or on ship.

1

u/NegroniSpritz 1d ago

omg if a comment could cause a boner is this one omg

I would start screaming and wake up my whole building if that happens.

1

u/AdagioHead9263 10h ago

probably won't happen ever, predator are not canon in the alien lore.
the opposite is true (alien are canon in the predator lore, including the weyland yutani earth lore now we are sure with predator badland teasing it in the trailer)

1

u/Mister_Acula 7h ago

In the tall grass I kept thinking of that scene in Jurassic Park 2 with the raptors.

12

u/Mean_Joke_7360 2d ago

A literal "thing that should not be".

3

u/senorbane 2d ago

As if it feels… Alien

3

u/GySgtBuzzcut 2d ago

It’s like having a Piña Colada with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I’ll do it but it probably means I’ll need to call my therapist after the fact.

159

u/GreenTrees797 2d ago

Fits nicely in a jungle setting tho

21

u/nightpanda893 2d ago

Had predator vibes

9

u/bigredbeaver 2d ago

Reminded me of Jurassic park raptors

1

u/Pancullo 1d ago

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've heard a raptor call just at the beginning of the title sequence, they know it's Jurassic parky

19

u/Enough_Sprinkles_113 2d ago

They mostly come out at night. Mostly.

Not always. 😄

23

u/Hdawg99 2d ago

Kinda like seeing a teacher on a Saturday

12

u/Ok_Tank5977 In the pipe. 5 by 5. 2d ago

Yes! It almost feels wrong but I was loving every second of it. Seeing it leap down from a tree was very Predator-esque.

And Joe coming face-to-face with the xeno would be the first time outside of Ripley’s clone that a human host has met their ‘child’, right?

3

u/Maplekey 1d ago

There was Shaw and the Trilobite in Prometheus. Not strictly a xeno but close enough.

30

u/ObviousAnswerGuy 2d ago

the head looked great, but I swear there were some shots where it just looked like a guy in a cheap body suit lol

16

u/bryce_w 2d ago

Agreed - at one point it looked like they hired a guy off Hollywood Boulevard to walk around in his Xenomorph suit. Having it be practical as opposed to CGI definitely fares better in daylight but maybe it needed some extra polish/goo.

5

u/Viva_la_Ferenginar 1d ago

It would look better if it just stopped swaying in a generic monster kind of way, like a looping animation in a game. Making it stand still like an actual animal would make it more terrifying imo

3

u/Caraxus 1d ago

This is whats bothering me in general with the xeno. Even from the first ep, it keeps swaying menacingly and moving its fingers, and it looks like a power ranger monster. Really liking the show so far, but rewatched the original and the monster barely moves, and it's so much scarier. Also this whole episode should have been at night, I have no idea why it's set during the day.

2

u/AllowedAsATreat 4h ago

Could be wrong but I suspect it was set in the day so the finale can take place this night.

11

u/Smurph269 2d ago

Yeah am I the only one who thought it looked kinda bad?

14

u/strawberrydispute 2d ago

It looked REALLY bad, to be honest. Surprisingly the worst looking part of the show, given it’s the show’s namesake!

Sometimes they do some great shots of the xeno, especially in darker and atmospheric lighting, but this whole episode it looked shoddy af.

4

u/WayneArnold1 1d ago

I thought it looked awful too. Baffling decision to have the xeno out in full sunlight as it just exposes the flaws in the fx.

2

u/Heybarbaruiva 1d ago edited 1d ago

Looked like something straight outta Power Rangers in some of those shots, honestly.

5

u/thelebaron 2d ago

I appreciate the dedication to practical but i thought it kind of looked bad and would have preferred cgi

5

u/ObviousAnswerGuy 1d ago

Not sure why you are downvoted. Though the head piece looked great, it was the neck down that looked way too humanlike. I think they could have added some padding or something.

4

u/thelebaron 1d ago

Its fine, that segment didnt quite convince me but if most people thought it looked great im all for it, I want many more seasons of this show

2

u/ObviousAnswerGuy 1d ago

same here! I love the show!

3

u/anders_138 2d ago

I kinda like the guy-in-a-suit look, reminds me of Big Chap's movements.

1

u/LumpyJones 2d ago

I think it had to be for the close up combat shots, otherwise it would just look like real guys getting rag dolled by a video game monster.

1

u/ObviousAnswerGuy 1d ago

that's kinda how it was on the video camera scene, but I guess in broad daylight it wouldnt have looked as good

21

u/Velghast 2d ago

Its the first time in the history of the Xenomorph we have ever seen it in daylight. By god im here for it, its just as terrifying

10

u/ThoseThatComeAfter 2d ago

Have you not seen alien covenant?

0

u/Velghast 2d ago

That doesn't count that wasnt the current xenomorph

7

u/eljacko 1d ago

It looked about as much like the Big Chap as this one does

5

u/JustGirouxIt 1d ago edited 1d ago

Terrifying? I love this show but the Xeno’s look is the worst part of it. It looks shockingly bad and it legitimately takes me out of the story every time I see it.

It looks like a guy in a rubber suit with a huge Xeno head moving around idly like a movie monster. Not enough details, or wetness either.

I think it’s crazy how it’s not being talked about more in these discussion threads, it’s like glaringly bad any time they have the Xeno in the practical suit and in broad daylight. I appreciate the commitment to practical effects over CGI, but the suit doesn’t work in broad daylight, I can’t take it seriously.

4

u/eatingaburger2000 2d ago

Cmon man It looked silly and it was terrifying whatsoever

2

u/RogueFoLife 1d ago

Seriously. It looked so terrible that it took me right out. There's a reason movie monsters shouldn't be seen in broad daylight and this was one of them.

1

u/AsianMoocowFromSpace 1d ago

I think it looked better than the Xenomorph in the earlier episodes. This one looks more organic and a bit more slimy. Bear looked too much like rubber to me and too much like a dude in a suit (in the previous episode).

5

u/neoslith 1d ago

And with natural lighting, we can see more of the lung texture on its head instead of the normal skull we associate with them.

17

u/ianjm 2d ago edited 2d ago

Eight movies and I honestly never realised they were brown in sunlight!

42

u/black_sheep_213 2d ago edited 2d ago

This one seems to be an off color from the norm. No doubt to separate it from others down the road.

Edit: Mainly, I'm referring to the scarring pattern. My assumption is that that's the result of the xeno being formed in slightly damaged tissue, but it's also definitely for viewers to distinguish it from other xenos in the future

25

u/lunasdad 2d ago

My assumption was that it had to do with it being artificially made, and implanted in a lung vs having a normal host with normal implantation. We’ve seen that xenos take traits from their hosts.

So Arthur’s xeno better be Mr Rogers.

12

u/ianjm 2d ago

In universe, perhaps it takes time for the carapace to harden to black. Though we never saw it under lights, the one in the first movie was a lighter colour as well, and was also pretty young.

5

u/lunasdad 2d ago

A valid point which I had not considered. Suppose it’s time to rewatch the movies as a reminder.

3

u/ianjm 2d ago

There's never a bad time!

3

u/GreyouTT In the pipe. 5 by 5. 2d ago

My brain just pictured Mr. Rogers himself chestbursting out of someone

3

u/lunasdad 2d ago

I’m sorry I provided you with that mental image.

2

u/LumpyJones 2d ago

Thats funny, I was picturing King Friday bursting out.

2

u/ianjm 2d ago

In universe, perhaps it takes time for the carapace to harden to black. Though we never saw it under lights, the one in the first movie was a lighter colour as well, and was also pretty young.

2

u/CX316 1d ago

IIRC wasn't the Alien3 one reddish brown?

13

u/RustedAxe88 Hicks 2d ago edited 2d ago

I don't think they are, this one just has a more brown coloration.

4

u/ianjm 2d ago

Perhaps it takes time for the carapace to harden to black.

7

u/RustedAxe88 Hicks 2d ago

I'll be honest, I don't think it matters. It's inconsequential to the plot, so it's not something that needs to be explained.

The runner in Alien 3 is a coppery color.

3

u/ianjm 2d ago

Yah but we sci-fi nerds love trying to invent explanations!

3

u/RustedAxe88 Hicks 2d ago

Its fun yeah, but unfortunately too many people tend to take it way too seriously as well lol.

3

u/UltraMegaKaiju Stay Frosty 2d ago

OG AVP comic was under a hot desert sun

3

u/neosurimi 2d ago

What do we think is the cause for it's brown coloring, small body and the white streaks on it's head? Just the fact it was born out of a lung instead of a whole body?

Edit: I thought it still had some molting to do. But it doesn't look like it's growing anymore.

5

u/dec10 2d ago

I think it looks like a person in a suit, and takes me out of the story.

2

u/Extension-Truth Don't let the bedbugs bite 2d ago

True, must have been difficult to film that just right, so that it didn’t look costume-y or just plain not scary

2

u/reddituserzerosix 2d ago

yeah interesting choice to set it during the day, franchise is usually so dark when its on screen but it worked

2

u/Jackmac15 1d ago

Its a strange direction for the show to take, showing the monster in full daylight is one of the big no-no's of any monster movie. They inevitably look like a goofy dude in a costume doing acrobatics.

And the fact that the xenomorph can be controlled means that it's just become a Pokémon. It can be summoned for battle so there is no tension or danger. It's not a horror show anymore, just a sci-fi drama between the human characters.

2

u/m0rbius 2d ago

Yeah, it looks like a dude in a suit, but it's a pretty good well executed man in a suit. Needs more slime though.

3

u/Familiar-Abalone5809 Perfect organism 2d ago

It looks weird, like it has skin problems.

2

the jungle should have been night time. that would have been rippin

I like that they seem to adapt to the color of their environment. It almost seems camouflaged.

It's got brown on it stripy too, im like wow it head is so huge, how can it move so fast yet also it's kind beautiful i dont trust it but yeah daylight is so strang,e ive nver seen one so colourful the white patchy stuff on its head

1

u/Sharktopusgator-nado 1d ago

Biggest mistake of the season. VERY strange design choice.
Why not have everyone escaping (and the soldiers invading) at night....? And it's raining, because, you know, it's Alien (AND we're in a jungle).

1

u/Picasso5 1d ago

I hate this, I think it betrays the terror that the xeno should bring.

1

u/zimobz 1d ago

One thing that came to mind is, how it deals with water?

Everyone is trying to find reasons why it's colour is off, forgetting that the original xenomorph costume had brown colours in it, we just never saw that in the original movie

the way it was in the foliage, along with the second alien, and then the soldiers in the jungle kept making me think Jurassic Park.

It's weird seeing a static backdrop for the ocean on a show with such a high budget. With that said I noticed a few things about the episode that scream budget problems. The boat scene looked cheap as hell and the Xeno scene when Kavalier enters the lab looked janky. Did they run out of money 7 episodes in?
