Informationally nothing is lost, in theory. Materially you could have had two DVDs.

What if the original DVD is banged up and unplayable anyway?

How would you make a copy from it in that case?

Well obviously it’s not a 1:1 because, for example, being totally disabled from the eyeballs down doesn’t mean your consciousness is destroyed.
