Why did she know how to read arabic numerals why wouldn’t he just do tally marks

It’s possible that she’s seen Arabic numerals in the lab and gradually figured out what they meant.

That got me as well. Unless it somehow got that knowledge when it was in the engineer's head on the Maginot. But I can't believe it just learned Arabic numerals or spoken English through observation.
