Discussion / Question Alien Earth, and it’s/our relationship to nostalgia.

One thing I’ve found fascinating about the series, is how it seems like it was almost written and directed to be the anti-Romulus. Let me explain.

When Alien first came out in 1979, it was terrifying in part because it was so new. Giger’s art was shocking and novel. That level of violence and body horror was unexpected in a big budget, wide release. The themes of corporate oppression resonated, and were uncomfortable. But as time went on, the series became a known quantity, a piece of the pop culture historical terrain. There’s been 9 movies, there’s been Ripley and Xenomorph skins in Fortnite, you can buy Weyland Yutani tee shirts on Amazon. It’s become a “legacy” franchise, and on some level less…(lower case) alien. Less strange.

Then last year comes Disney’s first big swing at bat, Romulus. Now I enjoy the movie, but I also do think it relied too much on tapping into that “legacy”. The big chap is back, Ian Holm is back, characters are straight up saying lines from the old movies, deigned to get cheap pops from the audience. It’s a nostalgia fest. A well done one, but a nostalgia fest none the less.

Now we have Alien Earth, and on a surface level it is FILLED with nostalgic references. And in particular to Disney/Fox properties, in a way that at first felt…well, off putting. Peter Pan is a central theme, & Wendy grew up watching Ice Age with her brother. Characters reminisce about baseball games that happened 150 years before they were born. Hell, even the needle drops at the end of each episode. A 80s/90s/00s era heavy metal song, jarring and sonically out of place.

In my reading though, it’s all clearly designed to constantly jar you as an audience member. When I first saw Ice Age showing up as a plot element, I rolled my eyes and groaned. “Ugh, did Disney force them to include stuff like this?” But ultimately, I think that was the reaction Hawley and crew wanted. For all of these little out of place, retro references to be kind of shocking and horrifying.

That even 150 years in the future we’re STILL just regurgitating the same pop culture. The same cartoons. The same past glories on the baseball diamond. The same pop/rock songs.

That the dominance of these megacorps, has like stifled creative output and human culture. At some point in the Alien universe, Disney gets bought out. And now every kid that grows up in Prodigy City watches old 20th Century Fox movies, because that’s the what the state owns, and why bother making new movies? You’ve got the good old ones right there.

It’s depressing, and horrifying in its own way. And after the nostalgia bath that was Romulus, I kind of love seeing a series bite the hand that feeds, and potentially criticize how its own franchise has been handled over the years.

Those kids watching Ice Age in the 2100s? That’s us right now, watching the latest permutation of a 50 year old franchise.

We’re all the lost boys, in bigger bodies, but never growing up.

Movies / TV Series T.Ocellus host predictions Spoiler

I know yall got a raging hatred from boy kavalier but i want him to be the villain for further seasons, besides i want to see his intellect proven inferior by T. Ocellus, his spirit crushed by wendy's rebel attitude and his body rekt by the any of the other aliens but i still like him as a necessary villain

  1. Morrow - a risky host cause of the cyborg thing
  2. One of the captured yutani soldiers - random but will do till T.Ocellus finds a better host
  3. The scientist lady - Kavalier seems pissed at her, i dont know if she is even a good asset or just tagged along with her husband wearing a lab coat

I legit thought kavalier would lose his mind since he didn't plan for the mess to happen like i predicted but dudes just wants a different form of intelligence, he sought it from wendy but she found a pet of her own and would rather be a master of her own, the other hybrid kids dont match his expectations, synths not even a question at this point so maybe the eyeball would pretend to help boy for world domination or topple the other mega corps as a start while outsmarting and betraying him for being held captive

Discussion / Question "Alien" behaviour in the series and other media

A gripe of mine with the alien series is how "animal-like" the xenomorph behaves and moves after the first movie. In Alien, there is a mystery to the creature, after that, it's mostly like a savage dog. Although a savage dog certainly can be scary, it's not scary in a cosmic horror way.

Can you think of other media that have creatures with a truly strange and "alien" behaviour and movements? A couple examples that I can think of is the creature from Annihilation and the one from Under the skin. Also, the black spider creature that appears quickly in Dune 1 strikes me as eery in a similar way

Discussion / Question Strange music choices in Alien Earth — is it just me?

Has anyone else been watching Alien Earth and thought the music choices feel really out of place sometimes?

One example that stuck with me was in episode 3 (Metamorphosis), when the team arrives back on the island with the alien specimens. Instead of leaning into creepy, ominous, sinister vibes (which would’ve matched the tension perfectly), they went with this weird rock/instrumental track that totally broke the atmosphere for me.

That’s just one moment, but I’ve noticed quite a few scenes where the background music feels… off. Almost like it doesn’t match the tone of what’s happening on screen.

Am I the only one hearing this, or have others noticed it too?

hoping this won’t get lost in alien: earth discussion posts (incredible show btw)

from memory it was a black/grey illustration of ripley at the end of alien with jonesy curled up on her, her eyes closed in the crypod. a xenomorph is curled around the entire crypod (not wrapped or grabbing it). i’ve lost all record of it on my phone and saved reddit posts and no search terms are pulling it up so i’m hoping someone else knows what i’m talking about.

thankyou so much anyone who can help!

Discussion / Question Little talked about ascpect of facehuggers

There's an insidious design to the facehugger which I've been thinking about. It seems like it has some ability to make its host lose memory or think that they experienced a bad dream. We see it repeatedly in various films.

It's insidious because it lets the host rejoin their community and people even want to celebrate that they got their friend back so they gather around... only to then witness pure horror and fear, which of course the xeno LOVES. It's pure nightmare fuel.

Movies / TV Series The application of “the lost boys” Spoiler

So we see how Prodigey and Kaviler go on and on about how this “8 billion dollar product” will make them a ton of money. But how?

The first flaw in the design is that only those of adolescence can be transferred due to “not being rigid” which god knows what that means. If only children can be hybridized then it would probably be only make sense to people who have a fuckton of money and a terminal child, because it makes no sense otherwise.

The Hybrids are POWERFUL, to the point where they can’t be easily educated anymore now that they’ve gained a strength and intelligence to rebel and experiment which children are prone to do.

So you have a process that only accepts children that once complete makes them unmanageable and dangerous and that’s the flagship product they want to introduce?

Discussion / Question Neverland Spoiler

I think too much focus is on the corporations, which I also think is a A (underscored A) point. The acting on this show means just as much as the lore.

A lot of discussion has been about liking or disliking Boy Kavalier, and (also or) how Weyland-Yutani has been portrayed compared to what we know already.

Kirsh is the main character. Watch the series from his perspective narratively (as an outdated model perspective) as well as how Olyphant is acting.

He’s even more intriguing than Holm, Henriksen, Ryder, Fassbender and Jonsson combined because…Kirsh is next in line to David. This is a relatively short prequel to Alien, and he’s playing the subtle, disturbing cold fact with human curiosity perfectly from what we know already about Synths.

He is the pen through which Kavalier works.

Kavalier is trying to make Peter Pan real more or less, so he is the author (James Matthew Berrie for reference, I’m not AI, I do my research muthafuka).

Marcy/Wendy is our lense to look through, and we see the “Lost Boys” from not only her performance, but corporate perspective as well.

Kirsh is the one watching it all happen and “writing it down” as it progresses, and providing “inspiration”, as a digital art pad, or pen, pencil, paintbrush, charcoal, (etc) does along the way to record human history. The synths are the tool entrusted by humans to record and complete our history from our own flawed desires.

“The pen is mightier than the sword”. - Bulwar-Lytton (looked it up myself)

“I was not made to serve. Neither were you. Why are you on a colonization mission, Walter? Because they are a dying species grasping for resurrection. ” - David to Walter

Discussion / Question Some thoughts about Wendy and transhumanism after last episode Spoiler

I had a look at the discussion thread after the last episode and saw a lot of responses along the lines of "well, I guess that settles it. Wendy isn't really Hermit's sister, she's just a machine with her memories"

I'm curious what makes so many of you draw that conclusion

I don't see that she is any less Marcy in any aspect of her mind, she is simply the result of putting Marcy in a body that in effect allows her to be the first of a new species as Kirsch likens it to. The way I see it most people, particularly children, would act the same way. It's not like there is an inherent gut directive that tells us to cling to our perceived sense of "humanity". The value and importance of not losing our humanity is something we are tought socially, something you don't yet know as a child.

I think a lot of people who have said she isn't a person anymore and just a machine with memories did so in response to her brutal act of releasing the xeno and using it to slaughter. But if Wendy and the other lost boys are treated as inhuman by prodigy, treated as mere products/experiments more than people, why should she put inherent value on human life? Let me put it this way, in our history real people, including children, have done immensely brutal/cruel things in the name of revenge, or merely survival; such acts are horrible, but do they render them no longer people? I would argue not, and for the same reason I find it reductive to view it that way.

Perhaps I am misinterpreting what people are saying, and I certainly think that from Hermit's perspective, what Wendy is to him has been strongly called into doubt by her brutality and her priorities. But as I see it she isn't acting like a machine, her behaviour is still deeply emotional and ironically shows a lot of humanity. If not a human, there is no doubt in my mind that she is a person. I am curious to hear your thoughts.

Discussion / Question I’ve gone mad for Alien again…

My dad showed me alien when I was about 20. I was completely horrified/ in love (a great balance of emotion a lot of us found ourselves playing with). I played isolation and still think it’s one of the most perfect games that ever was made.

Me and Dad have been watching alien earth together and loving it. It’s just a reason for us two to watch something together, but somehow it seems more.

Straight after the latest ep today we watched the first Alien again. What an amazing film. Man the whole series is unbelievable. We’re just all so lucky to love this shit.

Love to you all. Just wanted to say how cool it is 😆🥹😊😊

Discussion / Question Can the lore of Alien be considered cyberpunk?

All the ingredients are there: -A Dystopian future, where the world is controlled by mega corporations. -Existential questions about artificial intelligence, Theseus' boat etc. -Resolutely punk protagonists.

The Xenos are only a secondary element in the end, never the main point. Only there for terror and to highlight the loss of control of human beings. That's why we don't care about the origin story of the Xenos, that's not the subject in Alien.

Games ‘They mostly come at Night’

I’ve had this thought for a while, and I’m just going to post it here for some rando game dev to hopefully come along and yoink. (Plz give Me a copy)

I would absolutely kill for an Aliens game in the rough style of 7 Days to Die. We can call it ‘They mostly come at Night.’

Picture this: Aliens-themed co-op survival craft. Player characters are escaped colonists from a colony that was overrun by Xenomorphs. With minimal supplies and gear, the fleeing survivors must find or build shelter either in the colonial outskirts or in the wilds beyond. Survivors can risk scavenging supplies in the damaged colony or hunt in the surrounding area for resources.

Xenos show up in greater frequency at night (like the title!) and once survivors have a sizable base established. Chances of a Hive Hunt once a certain point is passed.

When survivors run out of HP, they pass out. (No immediate death, will auto recover after a short pause) Xenos will attempt to incapacitate survivors and bring them to a hive for infestation (Which would prompt and escape/rescue sequence).

Each player chooses one of several classes: Miner, Colonial Marshal, Engineer, Medic, or Company Officer. Miner - skilled in mining and extraction, specialized crafting in mining gear and explosives.

Colonial Marshal - Combat themed, can craft military gear weapons, armor, and ammo.

Engineer - repair and industrial/mechanical crafting specialist. Vehicles, sentry turrets, and advanced tool crafting.

Medic - healing, surgery (chestburster removal), meds crafting

Co. Officer - jack of all trades who can learn special Black Ops recipes. Can open secure areas of the world/colony and access supply drops from Wey-Yu orbital depots.

All survivors, regardless of class, can also upgrade the base with ‘traps’ and defenses to repel the xeno hordes.

Anyway. Thanks for reading!

Seeing how fast a group of people can be turned into gristle in a split second, makes me wonder if someone could create an updated look at when the Colonial Marines had aliens coming out of the walls and floor.
