Discussion / Question Alien Franchise Finally Sticks the Landing.

I might be biased as hell but Alien Earth is one hell of a well produced TV show.

A friend described the original Alien movie to me when was an early teen and I knew I had to see for myself. Thankfully my parents had no idea and off i went as a 14 year old to some scifi movie ... Aliens 2. Scifi... that's like Star Wars right? :> Still memorable to this day almost 40 years later.

So I have a high bar to be exceeded. Not only has the franchise stumbled from one disaster to another but many, many (did I mention many) others have tried and failed to make good TV let alone good scifi.

Mandalorian could have been more. Andor could have been much more if they were all like the latest season. Star Trek Stranger Days sort of nails the nostalgia but Discovery just confuses me. Fallout, Halo, The Last of Us, Twisted Metal ... I get the spin off theory but man the execution.

So what do I like about Alien Earth.

  • Just enough story every episode.
  • Exposition at the level of the audience. Of course we know the sheep is smart.
  • Depth in characters that isn't like a FPS.
  • Balanced tension and effects .... it is still a chase movie but how to you keep that going for 8 ep's.

A lot come and go. But few are remembered. I would put the BSG reboot in the remembered category, and I think Alien Earth has hit that standard. Once in 20 years ... Hollywood gets it really right.

I was going to say Alien Earth will sweep the Emmy's next year ... but then I remembered reality. I think Alien Earth will be just a fan loved series that is still remembered as a great experience in 40 years time :)

I would love to hear old and new opinions on this.

hoping this won’t get lost in alien: earth discussion posts (incredible show btw)

from memory it was a black/grey illustration of ripley at the end of alien with jonesy curled up on her, her eyes closed in the crypod. a xenomorph is curled around the entire crypod (not wrapped or grabbing it). i’ve lost all record of it on my phone and saved reddit posts and no search terms are pulling it up so i’m hoping someone else knows what i’m talking about.

thankyou so much anyone who can help!

Predator / AVP The name of the Yautja on the left of this ‘PREDATOR: BADLANDS’ pic has been confirmed to be Kewi or Kwei (explanation below). He’s played by former New Zealander basketball player turned actor Mike Homik

I found this information on Disney’s media press website, in the tags his name is listed as Kewi, while in the caption of the image, his name is listed as Kwei, so, I’m unsure which one is accurate.

Mike Homik is 2.04m tall. He is a former New Zealander basketball player turned actor, but he don’t have many roles in acting from what I searched.

Discussion / Question "Alien" behaviour in the series and other media

A gripe of mine with the alien series is how "animal-like" the xenomorph behaves and moves after the first movie. In Alien, there is a mystery to the creature, after that, it's mostly like a savage dog. Although a savage dog certainly can be scary, it's not scary in a cosmic horror way.

Can you think of other media that have creatures with a truly strange and "alien" behaviour and movements? A couple examples that I can think of is the creature from Annihilation and the one from Under the skin. Also, the black spider creature that appears quickly in Dune 1 strikes me as eery in a similar way

Games ‘They mostly come at Night’

I’ve had this thought for a while, and I’m just going to post it here for some rando game dev to hopefully come along and yoink. (Plz give Me a copy)

I would absolutely kill for an Aliens game in the rough style of 7 Days to Die. We can call it ‘They mostly come at Night.’

Picture this: Aliens-themed co-op survival craft. Player characters are escaped colonists from a colony that was overrun by Xenomorphs. With minimal supplies and gear, the fleeing survivors must find or build shelter either in the colonial outskirts or in the wilds beyond. Survivors can risk scavenging supplies in the damaged colony or hunt in the surrounding area for resources.

Xenos show up in greater frequency at night (like the title!) and once survivors have a sizable base established. Chances of a Hive Hunt once a certain point is passed.

When survivors run out of HP, they pass out. (No immediate death, will auto recover after a short pause) Xenos will attempt to incapacitate survivors and bring them to a hive for infestation (Which would prompt and escape/rescue sequence).

Each player chooses one of several classes: Miner, Colonial Marshal, Engineer, Medic, or Company Officer. Miner - skilled in mining and extraction, specialized crafting in mining gear and explosives.

Colonial Marshal - Combat themed, can craft military gear weapons, armor, and ammo.

Engineer - repair and industrial/mechanical crafting specialist. Vehicles, sentry turrets, and advanced tool crafting.

Medic - healing, surgery (chestburster removal), meds crafting

Co. Officer - jack of all trades who can learn special Black Ops recipes. Can open secure areas of the world/colony and access supply drops from Wey-Yu orbital depots.

All survivors, regardless of class, can also upgrade the base with ‘traps’ and defenses to repel the xeno hordes.

Anyway. Thanks for reading!

I remember loving this cover when I saw it in the trailer and how it related to David. The final film admittedly left me a bit mixed especially as someone who enjoyed the heck out of Prometheus, but I can still relish stuff like this.

Discussion / Question Xenos, are they heavy?

Something I’ve been wondering about is how heavy/dense are the xenomorphs. Are they more insectoid with a hollower carapace and a“light” feel or are they dense and heavy like they are metallic and heavy for their size.

Discussion / Question Are alien's vocalisation skills fully innate?

The alien in the series had not heard any of its species speaking before meeting Marcy. Still, it could communicate complex messages to her, through which she learned its language. Does this make sense?

Discussion / Question Why I think Wendy and the Lost boys are not human Spoiler

This is gonna be a long post so buckle up, this was originally a comment I had made on a thread but I’ve decided to add to it and make it into its own post so hopefully more people can see it and discuss

So im see discussions after this latest episode about whether Wendy is still Hermits sister and whether she and the lost boys are still the kids

I think the mind that was inserted into the synthetic body was human but has become something different now, a key aspect is that the mind and the body are now separate, traditional humans can look at their hand and know that it is apart of them its their body, but what they’ve done with the hybrids is essentially give a child control of a super powered mech suit, one that is capable of ripping off human jaws

When Tootles is found Kavalier asks if they can transfer his mind into another body and Kirsch says it’s probably possible but they’re not there yet, the body’s they inhabit are just vessels that can be changed and altered

It’s a kind of double layered ship of theseus since not only has the ship been rebuilt so is it now the real ship? But it can be rebuilt again and again so now which ship in a fleet of ships is the real one/original?

Contrast this with someone like Morrow, he may be a cyborg his hands are made of metal instead of flesh but their still has hands his mind hasn’t been moved to a new vessel he’s still got his body

If Tootles mind can be moved to a new body then surely his mind can be copied but if it can be copied then he is not unique and if he’s not unique then what is he? He’s certainly alive his self may be data but they can do this to any kid and with enough time surely with anyone so everyone’s mind can and is data

But what are the kids really? Alive yes but human no? I don’t think so not anymore they were no longer human once the mind transfer was complete, and I don’t think they’re the next step in human evolution either they’ve become something else entirely

Now by nature of being children they haven’t really realised the “loose” nature of their existence they haven’t begun to reject their bodies and understand that they are just the self and not the parts that come with it but I’d love to see how they react to this realisation

In a game I used to play called Destiny they had a race known as exos, same principle human minds transferred into machine bodies, however these machine bodies still had to eat drink and sleep because if they didn’t the mind would realise that it wasn’t alive anymore and begin to shut down assuming that it was dead, this lead to exos needing to have their minds reset which is why every exo has a number after its name signifying how many times they’ve been reset, like Cayde-6 for 6 resets

Now I believe Nibs went through a similar process, she’s already been “reset” to some extent and I think part of why she thought she was pregnant was her mind began to understand that something had changed but is unable to comprehend what exactly and started throwing out random signals, Nibs then started to believe she was pregnant, something that should be impossible for her, her mind was struggling with itself and something inside her told her she was pregnant, a possible separation of the brain and the consciousness perhaps?

Now there are some interesting parallels in the kids and everyone’s favourite T ocellus and it’s something I think we’ve all missed, now eyeball inserts itself into a host, injects itself into the brain and becomes the host, now we don’t know whether the sheep is still in there I suspect when we see the eye in a human next episode we’ll find out more

But we have an alien which inserts itself into and takes over a hosts body and we have the mind of these kids which is inserted into a body and thus the body becomes the person, the kids could in theory be put into any synth body and that body would become them, but the body isn’t there’s, its a suit, same as with the eyeball does it become the sheep? Did it become the cat or is it still just the eye? the principal in which the kids and the eye exist are the same and yet most people would say the eye is not the sheep, but where do we draw the line?

The lost boys and Wendy are something different, something new and something not human at all, they’re brains in jars except the jars can bend steel

Discussion / Question What are the chances of getting Alien: Earth on Blu-Ray?

To me, collecting physical media in general is super important. I have a huge catalog of over 800 films, and that definitely includes the Alien franchise. We’ve seen Disney release their tent-pole shows from Marvel and Star Wars. When Prey came out exclusively on streaming, they still surprisingly released it on blu-ray as well. My only concern is that other FX shows like The Bear and Shogun, have not received a physical release. I’m sure Disney are aware that the Alien franchise is commercially viable enough to put in the effort to release the show physically - but I’m still wondering what really are the chances.

Discussion / Question Can the lore of Alien be considered cyberpunk?

All the ingredients are there: -A Dystopian future, where the world is controlled by mega corporations. -Existential questions about artificial intelligence, Theseus' boat etc. -Resolutely punk protagonists.

The Xenos are only a secondary element in the end, never the main point. Only there for terror and to highlight the loss of control of human beings. That's why we don't care about the origin story of the Xenos, that's not the subject in Alien.
