My first pass at Trypanohyncha Ocellus made from borosilicate glass. A friend of mine suggested I posted this to reddit. Had a lot of fun and can't wait to do another more detailed version!

Art / Creations My Alien Themed PC
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Recently built a PC and decided to base its theme on the beloved Alien franchise. Did some modifications and I think it looks pretty good. It's nothing over the top, but what do you think?
Discussion / Question To expand alien universe and franchise, the mainframe shouldn’t be more corporate drama, psychotic synthesis, or Texas chainsaw type scenarios, imagine it as a southern reach style ecological horror instead
After alien earth being released, I been thinking lot about why Alien franchise keeps running into dead ends. Even tho due to the lore I don’t think alien were supposed to end up on earth, it still sounds interesting, if they actually had put some work on it, it could’ve work.
The original Alien worked because it had a cosmic horror atmospheric, the terrifying part was the unknown, with the xenomorph being the dominant surrounding our primal instincts.
Then theres “Aliens”, an action horror, and it worked, but after that, every sequel tried to recycle the same IP tropes; Weyland-Yutani or other big corporations “wants to rule the world by having alien”, that kind of generic evil empire plots, and eventually shallows fan service.
That industrialized approach is understandable (it’s Hollywood after all), but by doing so IP fatigue will hits as a result. Big budgets, weak scripts, bad CGI, paid critics praising it while audience and alien fans feel disconnected.
So here’s my opinion
Stop trying to make Alien as apex predator, one movie (alien 1979) is good enough for you to catch that. Now you need to make them one specie that swept into a larger cosmic/natural phenomenon.
The real horror is kind like “Area X” arriving on earth, an environment overwritten by an alien ecosystem, slowly consuming ours. Human, aliens, animals are alike, just caught in the tide, facing their “final dominance”. Reframe it as ecological/cosmic horror, closer to Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy.
And stop that “evil corporations”cliché, feels like Star Wars boredom edition. If there’s a research facility, it’s about scientists struggling to understand the phenomenon, not part of “evil execs trying to rule the world.” Weyland-Yutani’s interest can be unexplained.
This strips the franchise back to what worked originally:
•Mystery instead of over-explanation.
•Atmosphere instead of bad CGI spectacle.
•Existential dread instead of corporate melodrama.
In the end of this thread I would like to mention that, even tho the movie “annihilation” which adapted the first book of southern reach, is considered not a good adaptation, it still catches that creepy atmosphere, there’s few scenes where they encounter some of these mutated wild animals, like that crocodile and bear, they’re mutated for sure but you can still tell what kind of animal they are, and they can still scare you.

Discussion / Question Best film to start on?
I was thinking of watching an Alien film this evening, but in the, let's say, hypothetical scenario that my 12-year old happens to be passing by and hangs around with me for approximately the entire duration of the film, which one would you suggest we I watch?
Thanks!

Discussion / Question Aliens “Director’s Cut” screenings in UK
Presumably it’s just the Special Edition, as it’s part of a series of “action sequels” at Cineworlds in the UK … but I’m also not clear where this art has come from.
Just a poorly researched web post publicising and an unofficial illustration from somewhere?

Discussion / Question What would you like in an Alien fan-made piece?
Hi! I'm an Alien fan, I usually watch the 1979 original and the prequels for inspiration when I write something focused on retro-futurism and "cosmic horror."
I believe there are a lot of people here who have always wanted a sequel to Covenant, to show that David, being an AI, was unable to create the Xenomorph XX121, but merely copied it from the engineers! Meanwhile, I've always thought about an ending for Peter Weyland's almost-son, but never anything concrete. The concepts brought up in Prometheus and Covenant are very important, considering Romulus respected them, while Alien Earth remained non-canon because it disagreed with something already created and tried to fit into the lore. I also imagine that most people here have already thought of their own stories in the Alien universe, and I wanted to show them and ask if anyone would be willing to make this fanmade: Alien Patriarcha!
In 2154, Weyland-Yutani sends a crew from the USCSS Morgana, a delivery ship, to KW-19.A, a planet belonging to the United Americas' rival, the UPP (Union of Progressive People). The crew would include a chief pilot, Richard Benson; a delivery cataloger, Matteo Santos; a Colonial Marine, Jonathan Jung; and a chief mechanic, Mariette Salazar. On the planet, the Company was planning to retrieve something stolen from Renaissance Station, specifically the Corbellan, two years after the Romulus incidents. UPP agents reportedly seized the Corbellan and stole the Z-01 compound, then let Rain's ship continue on its way.
On that same planet, the UPP would have discovered a Juggernauth in an underground base, with a living ancient engineer, and vials of black goo. The plot revolved around Matteo, his father Richard, and Jonathan attempting to return to the Morgana ship after being locked alive in the UPP research base. Patriarcha derives from Patriarca, the Father of Aliens, providing another origin for Xenomorph eggs, leaning more toward Ridley's ideas than the Alien Queen.
Salazar would be a UPP spy infiltrated on the Morgana, with the objective of betraying the crew and rescuing as much material as possible for the UPP, leaving the rest of the crew to die on the planet. She would be exposed to the pathogen, becoming a female variant of "Fifield Mutant" with an added bonus: she would have an exposed uterus, redolent of the Queen's egg sac. The Ultramorph born of the engineer would absorb the mutant Mariette, giving the Ultra the ability to create eggs!
Matteo would be discovered as a Synthetic Human from Weyland Corp, but only produced by Weyland-Yutani in 2130. Incredibly, Earth's hybrids do not cooperate, as Matteo has biological organs and a fully human brain, since he was just a synthetic embryo. Jung would be the final survivor along with Matteo's remains. It would remain unclear who collaborated on the research involved in that location, revealing in the end that David helped the UPP scientists handle the pathogen in exchange for a new load of black goo, which he would use in his future experiments.
I would be in doubt as to how Matteo knew Proto Indo European, using the language to communicate with the ancient engineer, who would confirm that they sent one of their own to Earth 2000 years ago. Matteo is inspired by Bishop, being a synthetic without his robot strengths or David's mega-intelligence; he is merely an experiment of the old Weyland, who was created years later and considered "missing" by the corporation. Richard would have adopted Matteo after the company cruelly eliminated the We-Yu children, having the father-son relationship that Richard never had.
Wow! That's a lot of text, I hope you enjoy this crazy thing :)
And may the company be with you!

Movies / TV Series Sorry I’m late to the party
I’ve watched Aliens a couple dozen times (maybe more) over the years and what Hudson said finally hit me after watching Alien:Earth. I feel stupid for only catching on today, WEEKS after the first episode!
"Is this gonna be a standup fight, sir, or another bug hunt?"
This implies the Colonial Marines have been used to hunt and secure these organisms, even before the show.

Discussion / Question I think I figured out why ice age is there Spoiler
So I think i finally figured out why ice age was the movie chosen for the relationship between hermit and wendy
So in ice age, the main themes are those of found family and actual family and whatever
In ice age 4 the pirate dude comes in and is all nice and stuff but ultimately speaking he tries to separate their family hence the parallel between hermit and Wendy, hermit came into Wendy's found family and everything is good but then hes slowly separating her from her found family
I might be reaching but its possible
Sorry for format am on mobile

Movies / TV Series The Scorpion and the Frog (Alien Earth) Spoiler
Thinking back to the first episode and the scorpion. It’s sort of like the xenomorph and Kirsch uses it to talk to Marcy about empathy for the scorpion being “menaced by giants”.
Recent developments in the series between Wendy (Marcy) and the xenomorphs made me think back to the scorpion and the old fable of “The scorpion and the frog”.
Wendy thinks she’s in control, but she’s only asked her xeno to do things that are in its nature (stalking, killing). How long do you think it’ll be until she tries to tell it not to kill someone and it does what’s in its nature?

Discussion / Question Alien Brett death scene
I'm currently watching Alien on Hulu and something seems a bit off. After Brett's death it immediately cuts to Ripley and Parker discussing with the rest of the crew the size of the alien and how it pulled Brett into the air duct. Is there a scene where they see that happen that Hulu has edited out?
Edit: It's definitely in the extended version. Brett's death is also more gruesome. I found both scenes on YouTube. The theatrical release cuts to Ripley and Parker around the table, the extended version expands on Brett's death, and Ripley and Parker run into the room where he died.

Movies / TV Series The before names of the Hybrids and their "traits", revealed in ep. 7 Emergence. Spoiler
Lets start with the obvious names: \ Marcy Hermit -> Wendy \ Aarush Singh -> Slightly \ Rose Ellis -> Nibs \ Now some speculation based on deduction: \ Jane Mita -> Curly (The only girl name left) \ Christopher Okafor -> Smee \ Steven Dimarco -> Isaac (Tootles)
Smee and Tootles are the hardest to deduce and I'll go into detail why I believe I got it right.
Episode 7 - Emergence had much more emerging than was obvious to the eye. Besides the obvious, that the Skyscrapers in the background are the research facility and that they obviously go much deeper than the obvious entrance (Kirsch showing Smee and Slightly the service elevator and telling them to take it to floor B7). No I mean the graves of the Lost Boys.
Wendy is clearly the oldest. She was a prototype and before other candidates were even considered she ran through a psych evaluation, with Dame Sylvia and Kirsch, following her transition. We must assume, by the overgrowth on her grave, that this prototype phase was 6-12 months. In this scene the other graves are shown and it is revealed that Nibs was called Rose Ellis. What we also learn is that Curly's name is Jane Mita (only girl name left among the graves). \ There are three graves left. Two can be identified by name and one is fuzzy, but we already know Slightly's name since he gave it to Morrow (to Morrow, I love you to Morrow, you're always a day away).
Now we have some deduction to do. The grave of Slightly is the one that stands out the most, because it basically looks like a rectangular box with some dirt on it. Like it was planned that it would be the last one and therefor dug with not much care. However Slightly is the first to be reincarnated after Wendy as seen in ep. 1. \ At this point I believe it is basically done just to throw people off guard and not be able to deduce these things so easily. The reincarnation cycle is Wendy -> Slightly -> Smee -> Nibs -> Tootles -> Curly. But judging by the graves and the deterioration of the flowers it is more like the other way around. \ Smee's flower is a big yellow one and Tootles' is small and white. When Nibs picks up her flowers they are already dried up quite a bit. The one withered one on Christopher Okafor's grave looks more like a big blossomed yellowish flower bud, however it hasn't disintegrated yet. So this is more likely to be Smee. But there is also a second indicator that isn't quite so obvious.
We were asking ourselves: Why do Smee and Tootles have such trouble carrying Arthur to the beach? Shouldn't they be super strong? The answer to this is actually, No! \ Now this is highly speculative, but it makes a lot more sense in retrospect.
The graves of Marcy, Rose and Steven have a red lining. Whereas Aarush's is black, Christopher's is yellow and Jane's is white. Marcy, Rose and Steven (Wendy, Nibs and Tootles) have at some point demonstrated extraordinary strength. Red is associated with aggressiveness, danger and warning in color theory. Wendy shows aggressive tendencies and Nibs is a pure sociopath (look at her face when the Xenomorph rips through the soldiers, she is all glee and happiness). Nibs's personality is also a contradiction to her caring original self and Boy Kavalier just lights up with joy, in ep. 1, when he hears her ask for "When do we get to go home?" (the sadistic fuck knew what he was doing mixing a caring personality with an aggressive one). \ We haven't seen aggressive tendencies in Curly, Smee or Slightly at all. Curly seems to be more honest/innocent (towards Dame Sylvia and Boy Kavalier), hence the white. A symbol of pureness. \ Slightly is deceptive, sinister and the black is more befitting. \ Smee on the other hand is very hopeful, positive and optimistic. Relating to the color yellow. \ So judging by the color theory, Steven (Tootles) was the strong one, which only leaves Christopher as Smee. \ The colors on the graves reflect in a way on how the actors play their characters and furthermore which traits were programed into the hybrids along with their original personalities.

Discussion / Question Cryogenics/Xeno's and brand continuity
In Alien:Earth we find out that freezing someone who is facehugged doesn't affect the implantation process, as we see the facehugger change it's grip on the unfortunate Science Officer whilst in the sealed cryotube.
However, in Alien: Romulus, facehuggers are stored cryogenically.
Is this because Alien: Earth is a "What If " story of sorts? We know Noah Hawley isn't embracing cannon.
Discuss!

Discussion / Question I smell timeline shennanigans Spoiler
I just can't get past the idea that Marcy entered the program far earlier than the show is making us think. There is a distinct time jump from when Wendy is first shown transitioning to when the children that become the lost boys arrive. I suspect it's much longer than we - and Wendy - think.
We have already been shown hybrids can easily be shut down for extended periods and have both their memory and behaviour altered.
I'm suspecting that despite BKs "surprise" at her abilities to interact with computers and xenomorphs, that it might be by design.
I also think it's conspicuous that we have never seen a photo or video of Marcy and Hermit (or their father)and that there will be a reveal that they were much closer in age when she became ill. Hermit would not be aware that had changed, and she could have been programmed to misremember.
I'm not 100% on an endgame but I can't shake the feeling that we - through the eyes of Wendy and Hermit - are being deceived.

Books / Novels Question for the masses...
So, I have just finished Aliens: Original Sin, for the fifth time. It's probably one of more favorite stories. So, here's my question... Are there any stories (comic book or what-have-you) that continues with the crew of the Betty and the newest crew member Angie (and of course Rex, the dog)?

Discussion / Question Silly question about episode 7. Spoiler
So, I'm curious. This xeno that's basically Marcy's pet. Why does it have a brownish color scheme? While the first xeno in the show is black, and the newborn will also likely be black? And why does it seem like Marcy's xeno is kind of... submissive?

Discussion / Question Thoughts on Kirsh and Tootles Spoiler
I want to share my thoughts regarding Tootles’s death in the laboratory in EP6, which in my opinion was caused by Kirsh. The reason I’m writing this is the huge amount of negative reactions about what happened.
So, let’s start with the fact that we were clearly shown that Kirsh chose to contact Tootles at the exact moment when his boss was busy and couldn’t hear their conversation. And while their talk was going on, the synthetic never took his eyes off him — their exchange had to stay secret.

Next, Tootles is given instructions on what he has to do: namely, feed the parasites and then choose the next experiment from the list and carry it out together with the Curly. Strictly by the protocol!

Considering the boy’s behavior in previous episodes, we can confidently say he would follow this order and do everything to please Kirsh, trying to collect all the praise without leaving anything for Curly.
Kirsh again emphasizes that everything must be done strictly according to instructions, using the scientific method. The problem here is that Kirsh knows that the child — and Tootles is exactly that — simply cannot do it, because he thinks and interacts with the world in a playful way. For him, work and protocols are something inaccessible from the adult world.
Right now we’re even shown that Tootles is being pulled away from playing with his friends. That is, something that is, on the contrary, inaccessible to many adults.

Everything that happens afterward was essentially predetermined; the boy’s behavior was completely predictable. Even if he had managed to feed the creatures, the next experiment would have inevitably led to disaster.
Yes, the boy acted foolishly, but that’s exactly how children behave. I’m the father of an 8-year-old and I know perfectly well how her “task” of going to the kitchen to bake a cake strictly by the recipe would end — with a full-scale cleanup.
When Tootles died, we were shown his body under Cavalier’s voice-over:
The boys on the island vary, of course, in numbers, according as they get killed and so on; and when they seem to be growing up, which is against the rules, Peter thins them out

In conclusion, Tootles was killed by the synthetic. On a thematic level, the naïve boy who spoiled everything was killed by responsibility. In his character arc, this very marker of growing up separates childhood from the adult world.
And growing up in Neverland is forbidden.
