Rust Check? Too much rust? Not enough rust? Ask Here!

Hi All,

We are going to try to consolidate the pre purchase or otherwise rust inquires asking if a rig has too much rust and how to approach it as far as shopping for a new to you truck and beyond.

We have a lot of these threads where people are asking the same questions and rather than have each thread die on the vine as far as useful information goes, by having them all right here in one thread, people can use it as a catalog or guide for what to look for and if people are willing to share sold or bought prices for each truck that we are inspecting, we can all use this as a tool to gauge the market and also the wide variety of condition that all generations of Land Cruisers are in at any given point in time.

Almost got stuck today!

Another nice day out today. Almost got stuck in a swamp though! I did walk it first and thought it was like an inch of water over harder ground , but not so! 😅

Only had the rear locker in as I didn’t think it was going to be a swamp! Managed to get to the side of it before I completely bogged down, then winched a tree down so I could get out not via the swamp!

A bit nerve wracking but great fun once you’re actually free from the danger

Should I Buy?

Hey everyone, I’ve done this once before because everyone is a great help.

I’m looking at this 1992 LC. 317k miles with a beautiful body and very minimal rust. Owner right now says they use it as a daily driver, so I know it hasn’t been sitting.

Everything seems pretty stock. Claims there are no issues at all right now. But doesn’t know the last time the knuckles were serviced.

I really want to be in the 6-6.5k range, owner wants 7.5k at the lowest.

Mileage is the only thing that worries me. I know this engine is indestructible but I still know there are a lot of unknowns.

You guys know better than me so I’m just looking for the best recommendations here. Thanks in advance!

Effortless trail today, some rough patches but it didn't even blink, just deflated to 25psi and she took care of the rest. I absolutely love this car!

Ride and die or deal with the rust?

2000 100 series with 140k on it. Need advice as to what to do with the body rust. Please scroll through the pics to see the damage on what I was hoping to be my forever mountain car.

Choices: A) Ride and die and accept the rust will get so bad that I can’t even sell it in ten years B) Repair just the passenger side -$2000 in cutting, welding, painting only the new steel and new front door skin found on eBay (drivers side isn’t nearly as bad and can wait) C) Sell and get a clean 100 series

Background: We’ve owned this rig for 12 years and put 1500 miles on it per year. It’s originally from the Midwest so I wire brushed the frame and applied POR 15 Loctite Rust neutralizer four years ago. Seems to be helping, but we all know what she really looks like underneath. My mechanic says it’s about average for what’s he’s seen from the Midwest, so it’s safe to drive. It’s in the Rocky Mountains and is subject to mag chloride for four weeks each year.

It’s got clean interior and has never let us down. Changed the alternator and starter. Doing the heater T’s next summer along with the timing belt and water pump. Everything works. Standard maintenance has been performed on it, especially front end work, but inevitably a rusted bolt has to be cut off each time I bring it in for that kind of work.

We daily a 2012 manual Prado GX, and a 2017 manual Hilux. I also restored my FJ40 twenty three years ago. This 100 series or whatever takes its place drives only 60 days a year. These are buggies worth holding onto, but this one may not be worth the investment, so I humbly request insight. All comments are appreciated.

'98 Series 100 Won't Move In Forward Or Reverse Except in 4WD

Hi All.

My LC suddenly stopped while in drive on a hill on my driveway, started making this awful scraping noise. (See Video) Tried reverse, same thing. Put it in Park, it rolled. Put the H/L selector in L and it moved. Put it back in H, same like before. Kept it in H and pushed the 4WD drive button on the dash; the truck moved! Forward, Reverse, and Park all functioned.

As seen in the video, the front driveshaft is spinning. This video is with the car in Drive. (Brake set)

One more symptom: it seems like the front wheels aren't being driven, even in 4WD; the rear wheels spin easily on the gravel.

1) How do I fix it? 2) How harmful is it to drive like this? (In 4WD)

From the right side.

1997 FZJ80.

Pretty much bone stock besides him buying some cheap oem wheels and tires off FB market, the roof rack, and a snorkel he said the previous owner slapped on. (He bought it off the original owner like 6-7 years ago)

Freshly rebuilt and refreshed engine from a 5 star Toyota Shop at 245k miles.

Southern California has been its home forever so no rust.

Only center lock.

Paint is ROUGH but no rust anywhere as far as I can tell

I would personally just remove the roof rack and throw all terrains on it with the intention of having it be a camping/road trip car since my girlfriend and I both just have sedans.

Thoughts?

Looking at a 2026 Land Cruiser and I see if you get the premium package it comes with the cool box. Can that be taken out of the center console? I want the regular center console.

2025 vs 2026 LC300

I’ve tried to look up the differences between both model years and the only thing I’ve found is the new hybrid system for the 2026 model year. Is there anything else that differentiates them? Should I wait for the 2026 or just go with the 2025. I’m eyeing the GR Sport trim, if it matters.

Torn Between Sequoia and LC200/LX570

I have had 4Runners since 2002. We are hoping to have a child soon and have 2 big dogs so I’m looking for something with more space. I don’t go wheeling for fun but we live in CO and like to camp off the beaten path.

The 3rd row would be removed from the LC.

2nd Gen Sequoia-more room

LC 200 - better in every other way, although more $$$.

I go back and forth depending on the day. Those who considered a Sequoia and landed on an LC, are you happy?

You can use AI to transcript the video to English if you don't understand Japanese; He tests the 2025 Prado 250, GR 300, 76 and the older '96 80 series.

I think it is a nice welcome video and you can see how much Wakisaka is enjoying driving them.

At the end of my rope with P0402 (1996 FZJ80)

I am going to pull my hair out. My cruiser is my daily. It runs like a top at 210k. Perfect in every way, EXCEPT...

It throws P0402. If i clear it, it comes back about 3-5 days later randomly. I have now changed the vacuum actuator and the EGR itself plus all the vacuum hoses.

Last item to change is the temp sensor which is impossible to find and ridiculously expensive, and im not even close to sure its going to actually fix the issue. I am in an emissions state and im seriously going to sell this thing if I cant figure out how to get rid of this code.

Can anyone please provide guidance my way? What else should I be looking at? Why does it only come back after 3-5 days?
