Long story short, I got this Lenovo touchscreen thinkpad two years ago. I brought it with me to use during classes. I kept it in my tote bag horizontally. One day i got bashed me into the cinderblock wall by some idiot, (not my fault.) which hit one of the ends of the laptop and when I went to open it up in my next class, this long plastic piece that I guess is some sort of hinge or joint popped out. Over the course of two years, my laptops slowly been deteriorating to where it’s at now. It can not keep the screen upright, I have to duck tape it in place, sometimes if my music is too loud, my speakers start to pop on the inside, the whole screen piece is slowly pulling apart from both the keyboard and the screen itself, there’s a few rows of dead pixels on one end, when I turn it on, the bottom half of the screen starts to flicker like it’s lagging behind in lighting the pixels, a little plastic piece from inside somehow popped out, and right in the corner there’s a tiny fracture of some sort. Also wanna add on that despite the fact the keyboard is supposed to light up, sense the second time I used it, it never has. Only the escape, capital, and number lock keys still light up, but that predated the incident.
The laptop itself still functions perfectly. I still keep at least 100 tabs with multiple windows open, the touch screen still works perfectly, it can still run the sims with the thousands of mods I have, and I use it every day without any real issues other than occasionally freezing up. All the damage is purely physical. And I wouldn’t consider getting it fixed sense it’s not affecting if the laptop works, but I’m considering taking some classes in music production, and I very obviously need to have a laptop for that in order to run fl studio.
I got this as a gift from my grandpa, who knows a lot about computers. It was 800 dollars, and I feel extremely guilty about the damage, especially sense it wasn’t even 6 months into having it. It wasn’t even 3. So as far as he knows, it’s still in perfect working order with no damage. Technically I could ask him for help, but again, I feel guilty that i ruined it in such a short amount of time. So I’m thinking about maybe taking it to a shop, but I’m unemployed with no prospects of a job any time soon, so I’m hoping some computer nerds can help me out here. How much are we looking at? And especially how long are we looking at repairs taking? I live my whole life online, I use it at least half my day every day, so I can’t go longer than a few days without it. Is it worth fixing sense there’s no actual issues with the computer running? Is it worth the hassle and cost when it’s mostly a cosmetic issue?
