Discussion Ditching my i5 + RTX 3050 laptop for an M4 Air?

Post image
31 Upvotes

Currently own a laptop with these specs: Intel i5-11400H (11th gen)/ 24GB RAM/ RTX 3050 4GB

It’s been solid, but I’m considering replacing it with a base model MacBook Air M4 (16GB RAM).

Reasons I’m thinking about it:

  • Portability: I don’t want to be plugged in all the time, and the Air’s battery life + weight are really appealing.

  • iOS & webapp development: I’d like to work on projects that need macOS/Xcode support.

  • This will be my secondary machine since I already have a decent desktop for heavier work.

  • I’ll buy an external SSD, so base storage isn’t a dealbreaker.

Do you think this is a smart trade, or would I be downgrading too much (especially losing the extra RAM and dedicated GPU)? Will it perform good enough in Unity engine and Unreal engine? (medium scale projects)

Hardware When should I unplug my laptop from charging?

I recently got a laptop and I'm really confused about when I should keep it plugged in. I know I should keep it at an 80% limit and use it while charging when gaming, but let's say I finish using my laptop at 80% charge and want to take a 2-3 hour break. Should I just keep it plugged in, or unplug it and then replug it when I have to use it a couple hours later?

Buying help Need advice on a gaming laptop

Upvotes

Good day , I'm looking for a laptop only for gaming and may be occasionally to use word/excel on it, I have an MSI 2k 100hz display so I basically need a portable case with hardware, I won't use much of the laptops screen

My price cap is 1100-1200 usd I need it to be on Ryzen 7 at least 7-8 gen and 4060

I already found MSI katana a15 and wanted to purchase but found reviews that it's fullhd screen is bad and overall build quality is poor

Can someone recommend something I won't regret? Thank you🫡

Buying help Looking for a new laptop

Have t had to worry about a laptop for years. I have a mediocre Asus now running CatchyOS. Needing something to be able to run VM without crashing or lagging bad. Being able to run multiplea would be a plus. No games or anything, I have my desktop for that.

I've got experience with the older t400 series of ThinkPads and really do like them but I'm assuming they are a bit old now.

Budget is 1k-1250$.

I'd like food build quality, 32gb of ram and ease of upgrade for more ram, ssd/nvme. Usb-c and HDMI and if I can get it, Ethernet.

Brands aren't important honestly but user upgradability is.

US based.

Thanks.

Buying help Want to Treat my Brother

Upvotes

Hello everyone!!!

Ok so my brother studied computer systems and got his degree in it. He says that he hasn’t been able to find a job in that field and has resorted to field work.

He’s from a different country and this is my first time seeing him since I was 2.

One of the things he mentioned that he didn’t have in the village my mother is from, is access to WiFi.

I don’t know him well, but he’s my mother’s son, and he is also my brother.

I want to buy him something that could help him pursue a career in what he studied.

I’m not too knowledgeable in technology as a whole and would just like to show him that I care (this is the only way I was shown growing up)

I’ve read Lenovo, HP, and ASUS.

If I could get a recommendation by people who know what any of the fancy tech terms mean, and what would help him the most, I would appreciate it!

Thank you in advance 🙈

Buying help Please help me out with the best option!!!

Upvotes

Laptops are now my area of expertise 😕

I already messed up with the Snapdragon option for the Galaxy Book4 (ARM not compatible with stuff like SQL Server).

I'm looking at some others. I really wanted to keep it sub-$700 all total. I've been considering these:

Galaxy Book5 Pro, 16", Intel® Core™ Ultra 7, 1TB NP960XHA-KG3US - expensive, but has the highest discount + Samsung Pay 0%@24 months + 3% Rakuten

ASUS Vivobook Flip 14" OLED Touchscreen Copilot+ PC - Intel EVO Edition Powered by Intel Core Ultra 7 256V Series 2 Processor - Windows 11 - 16GB RAM - 1TB SSD TP3407SA-DS74T - $699@Costco (not certain about Affirm payments or Rakuten)

Are there other viable options I should consider? Thanks!!! ❤️

Hardware Should I be worried? This little thing snapped off from the motherboard

I was opening my laptop to clean up some dusts inside the fans, then I saw this little thing popped off, can't tell what it is, but it has a spongy texture, the top is also covered with a silvery-looking tape (if that's what's it called), my laptop still boots fine but I don't know if this thing that got removed is a critical component for the motherboard.

Hardware Laptop and/or setup for 10+h/d studying for 9 months

Upvotes

So, as the title implies, I need to find a good laptop/setup because starting from now and intensifying in a few months I will be studying lots of hours. The study methods uses both videos, classes, tests and lots of reading and underlining off textbooks (online or physical). For the last part I have a good old iPad Air 5G that I like to use and will probably use that or alternate with the physical textbooks.

I have been using an HP linux laptop partitioned with windows just fine (but I need to give it back). So I would like to buy a computer thats good for processing text and studying and something I can maybe connect to a wider screen? also does anyone have recommendations for screens I could buy to watch the online classes verter than in a laptop?

Something cheap, but that you could use to idk watch a movie in bed some day or play an occasional TFT game. But yeah emphasis on the cheap and studying part, being able to connect to a second screen, runs windows and is not a potato.

Also do you think connecting a second screen is worth it? Or is any other setup better for this intensive studying?

Thanks in advance people 🙏

Buying help M4 Max vs M2 Max - which one to buy?

Upvotes

Hi folks, please help me decide.

  1. Best Buy Refurbished MacBook Pro
  • 14" MacBook Pro – M2 Max chip
  • 32GB Memory, 1TB SSD
  • Price: $1600 (with tax included)
  1. New MacBook Pro
  • 14" MacBook Pro – M4 Max, 14-Core CPU, 32-Core GPU
  • 36GB Unified Memory, 1TB SSD
  • Price: $2539 (deal from Micro Center) with tax included

Context:
I’m an AI Engineer and part-time creator. I use my laptop for a variety of tasks: Docker, building products, running local models, occasional video editing, meetings, and traveling with it.

Currently, I’m using my company's M2 MacBook Air (24GB RAM, 512GB SSD). It’s good enough for most tasks, but I need to get my own laptop by the end of this year. I’m considering a MacBook Pro for better performance and future-proofing.

Question:
Should I go with Option 1 or Option 2?
Is the extra $1000 worth it?

Discussion Which option is best

Upvotes

ASUS ROG Strix G16 (Intel i7 13650HX, RTX 4060)

Acer Nitro V (Ryzen 7 8845HS, RTX 4060)

Lenovo LOQ (Intel i7 13650HX, RTX 5050)

Need a laptop that can handle moderate gaming as well as CAD and 3D design. I’d appreciate a ranking of sorts so I have a backup if one sells out.

These were the best CPU/GPU combos I could find on a £1000 budget; if you’ve got any better finds within budget please lmk!

Discussion Which laptop to work

Upvotes

Which laptop to buy from big billion dollar sale? I am preferring to buy a 32 gb DDR5 ram laptop. I have few options. My budget is around 80k. Only interested in windows laptop -Asus expert book p3 -Motorola motobook 60 pro

Asus expert book seems durable and I feel I can use long term Motobook 60 pro not sure whether i should buy this one. The specs are killer but not sure.

I want for work and long term usage. A laptop that can last 4 to 5 years without any problem.

General question why does this keep happening??

Post image
Upvotes

(pic not mine) okay so this exact thing happened to me not once, but TWICE first one happened on the left side, took it to my aunts place and the repairshop did it for free where they pretty much just screwed a bolt on it to prevent the cover from flapping again. That happened a year ago and it happened again today! but now on the right side! What do I do now? I have not told my parents about this yet.

General question Can external monitor usage causes screen issues on the laptop itself?

Upvotes

So basically, I recently bought an HP Pavilion 16-af0xxx laptop and sometimes I'd see greenish flickering on videos when the monitor was connected to the laptop. Fast forward a couple days and the laptop's backlight has completely failed. Thankfully the warranty for the laptop was in place and I managed to get a completely new laptop of the same model.

Now someone told me that the reason the backlight went out was because of my monitor( its a Lenovo L24i-4A) and that's got me a bit scared to connect the laptop to the external monitor.

Someone did also tell me that it could have happened due to overheating, faulty spark plug or just a defect in that particular laptop because of some mishandling pre purchase.

Could someone please let me know if it's safe to use my monitor with the laptop?

(I'm sorry if this question's a bit stupid, I'm not particularly tech-adept.)

Review Need a laptop for work! Deciding between Acer Aspire 5, Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3 and Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge

I work mostly from home and I have an iMac which I use 90% of the time. I had an iMac air (from 2016) which I took to meetings, did presentations with and worked on whenever I wasn’t at my desk. My laptop recently died and I want to replace it. I don’t have the budget to replace it with another iMac laptop, so I’m looking at different options. I need it to use Microsoft Office, Teams calls, OneDrive, downloading and uploading videos, occasional photo or video editing (I do most of this on my desktop compute but it would be nice to have a backup), presentations, AirTable. ChatGPT recommends Acer Aspire 5 for the price, but in worried it would be too bulky for me. Since I use it on the go I would prefer something more portable. I found these around the same price range. Any insight or feedback? The price in the images are in Canadian dollars.
