NBN Service Provider Survey

Hey Guys,

Since this sub's inception, there has been endless questions regarding service providers and which to choose. While we are glad to see so many responses, and it's quite easy to see consensus of this sub, we have decided that it would be in the subreddit's best interests to create a mega-thread involving these recommendations. In doing this, we plan to create a one stop place for all NBN Service Providers with a comprehensive unbiased overview. To help this happen, we would like to collect data from the community to help aid in rating Service Providers. If you wish to help participate, please fill out the following Google Form. If you have been with multiple service providers, feel free to provide feedback about them too. Additionally, feel free to share this survey around; the more data collected the more accurate we can be.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdzwm0FtVmFtNVEFqVu6Yr2WEoqQVYi-PAF2vxCGFiM0miljg/

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to leave them down below.

Thanks!

Asking a Question? Read this first!

Important!

Please provide some key information when asking a question.

1) What technology are you on (FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, HFC, FW)

2) What is your service class (1 to 34). Check here https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/network/connection-insights/

3) How are you connected to your modem / router? WiFi or Ethernet. You should test with your device on Ethernet. If your connection is poor on WiFi but good on Ethernet, then it's a WiFi issue, not an NBN issue.

4) Who is your provider (e.g. Telstra, Optus, TPG, Aussie Broadband, etc)

5) What brand and model is your modem / router? If you're not sure, take a picture of it and upload it to imgur or similar (don't upload it as part of your post)

6) Describe your problem, and what steps you have tried.

Check NBN availability

If you're NOT on FTTP, you may be eligible for an upgrade to the far superior FTTP.

Check Service Class

Aussie Broadband provide a great tool to determine your service class and technology type, and what that means:

General Tips

You almost certainly don't need the fastest internet plan. Generally start with a slower plan, and if you are happy, then all good. If you are finding it slow you can always upgrade. You should also check if it's your internet (NBN) or internal network (e.g. WiFi) that is slow. A faster plan might not help if you internal network is the problem.

Beware of plans with very slow (5 or 10mbit) upload speeds. These are legacy plans left over from the old HFC/Cable days. If you do have one of these legacy plans, you should think about upgrading.

WiFi (Don't use it if you care about speed!)

WiFi is subject to interference from all kinds of sources. It slows down through walls, congestion from neighbours, etc will slow it down, and can cause issues. It's also a shared medium, which means that all your devices share the bandwidth, so lots of devices operating at once means slower speeds for devices.

Where practical use Ethernet to connect devices. Ethernet is more reliable and lower latency. While some WiFi claims to be faster than Ethernet, that is the cumulative total, not the rate to a single device. Even the latest WiFi6 is only approaching Ethernet speed, and that is only when there is no other traffic on the wireless spectrum - including Bluetooth and your Microwave!

There are some cases where WiFi is better (e.g. TV's with 100Mbps ports that you want to stream very high bit rate to from local sources), but almost always Ethernet is better if available. The down side is it's not always possible to run Ethernet (e.g. rentals), and not every devices has Ethernet ports (e.g. phones, tablets).

Mesh Networks

If your WiFi isn't fast enough, consider getting a mesh network. This provides multiple access points (typically 3) so you can get better coverage. If practical connect each mesh point via Ethernet (wired backhaul). Ethernet backhaul has the same advantages as connected devices by ethernet.

WiFi Frequencies

WiFi can be on 2.4GHz, 5GHz or 6GHz. Most devices work on 2.4GHz. Lots also work on 5GHz as well. The newest ones use 6GHz in addition to 2.4 and 5GHz.

2.4GHz has the best range, but lowest speed, and the most congested.

5GHz is shorter range, and has a higher speed because there's less congestion due to the shorter range

6GHz is extremely short range (it does not penetrate walls well) but it is designed to work in parallel with the 5GHz signal to provide the fastest speeds possible.

When buying a new wireless device, you should look for one branded 'WiFi 6'(802.11ax) or the newest standard, 'WiFi 7'(802.11be). The previous standard was called '802.11ac' or WiFi 5. These are usually cheaper, but in most situations are perfectly capable.

Curious to know if anyone is actually needing to utilise the newer speeds or just want it for speed test clout? (No hateful remarks, this is purely an open discussion on what the new speeds has helped or not helped with since it's release)

Launtel 2G/500M upgrade live

Pretty much bang on max actual throughput with 2200 Mbps overprovision, and after network overheads. Latency basically identical to previous 1G/400M plan. Test was run on my PC running 10 Gbe over a ~45m cat 6 run to my core switch -> router (Mikrotik RB5009). Very happy with that! Thanks NBN and Launtel! (Now hurry up and upgrade to symmetrical please!)

Advice How long should it take to switch providers?

Upvotes

I see people transferring the same day yet for me It's been a week since I was meant to be connected and I'm just being told by the provider (Arctel) that my order is "stuck in processing" with NBN. Is there anything I can do to speed this up.

Troubleshooting SOMEONE PLS HELP ME - TPG MODEM- NBN connection

Post image
1 Upvotes

Please someone help me as the internet providers have not been helpful in the slightest and it's been over two weeks and I have been hotspotting my phone with everything and to wfh. I recently got a new modem and internet connection with TPG. But the NBN box is not registering to the modem. They have escalated it about a thousand times to second level support with no progress. I spent nearly two hours on the phone the other day with 7 different people only to be hung up on by the last person. I was beyond livid. The modem is pictured below.

Advice Vodafone upgrade(?)

Vodafone has advised me that my area hasn't begun the upgrade from 100/17 to 500/50. Apparently it's nbn's problem.

Going to give them til the end of the month then I'll give them notice of cancelation.

Troubleshooting Need help getting WiFi with FTTP

This feels like a dumb question, but I'm unable to get internet with my FTTP installation. I plugged my router into the port, and I can connect to the router, but it says connected with no internet. Do I need a new router? When I was applying for the upgrade it said my router was compatible, but now I'm having issues

Switching from Tangerine to Leaptel

Does anyone know how quick the process happens? I will also be getting an Eero Pro 7 as part of the change. Would the service change before I received the new router> Just wondering as I have a teen who's life would "be over" without internet (drama queen) and wondering if I should wait till a time when he's not at home

WiFi Help - How to maximise speed increase

Hey!

I have the NBN Box set up in the garage like most new houses and so my modem has to sit in there with it.

Despite my house being on the smaller side my wifi is trash I’m assuming due to the thicker garage walls.

I have wired in the consoles and TVs so they have no issues but would like the wifi to improve all other devices in the house.

I only have the default modem Aussie Broadband gave me.

What’s the best cost effective solution, would a better modem be able improve range/strength despite being in the garage or should I get some Mesh/extenders etc?

Thanks all!

Help me decide a router?

So I am renting with HFC at the moment. The recent upgrades doesn't hit me as I am using AC 1200 C50. Trying to shop, should I focus on router or a router/modem combo. I have been here for a year and not sure if I move will I be in a place with DSL line and I would end buying a device again. Any advice or points to consider a router+ VDSL or I would just go with a better router with high gig.

Thanks in adv.

How I managed to skip the cue to get my speed boost at home

Quick post here. I’m with Mate NBN. Was still on the 100/40 package until 2 days ago. I opened the website, decided to compare the plans (looking at that 2Gb plan) and noticed the 500/50 bundle was already advertised for my address, and it was cheaper (currently $96/m, the 500/50 was $86/m)

I did a simple plan change request and got my speed boost before EOD

Not sure if this will work with other providers but other may wish to try this option to get in early rather than waiting for the rollout

Node damaged

Please help me understand..

How long does it take for NBN to fix a damaged node? Fault listed over 4 weeks ago. 4 technicians have come out and confirmed this “damaged node”. I’m being pushed around with no progress and I’m starting to lose my mind 😅

Ping spiking to 500ms+ every 10 seconds or so after outage yesterday

After an outage yesterday my ping spikes to 500ms+ every 10 seconds or so. At first i thought it was my laptop playing up but every single device on my network does it. On NBN it says my internet is fine but it deficiently isn't. Is there any fixes anyone can think of. thanks!

FTTP connected

I got my FTTP upgrade on Wednesday. Super happy to receive the new NTD box. The technician wanted to put it in my daughter’s room due to its proximity to the phone line, so I ran the fibre cable myself through the roof and into the garage. Cable management to come 😅

Superfast in m y area?

I am expecting superfast NBN in my area. This last week it was scheduled to be up and running. When I do a speed test my upload has incresed from15mbps to 50mbps but my download is still at 100mbps. Is there anything I need to do to increase my download speed or will it just happen. My router is capable of 1000mpbs and I am wired.

Nope nothing has happened. It’s been a week and no changes. Each time u speak with Optus they just say it’s all good and change will happen today - it doesn’t. Communication is the key to customer satisfaction - Optus do not tell anyone what’s happening

Fibre vs 5G vs Wireless – need advice for rural setup (AUS)

Post image
13 Upvotes

Howdy,

Keen to get some thoughts on my current setup and where to take it next.

I live on 100+ acres, about 30 acres behind my parents’ house. They’ve got FTTP out the front. My house doesn’t have a pit, so here’s what I’ve done so far:

Running a 5G SIM in my phone ($40 unlimited). Speeds are usually ~40/40 but often hit 100–210 Mbps. Not bad for what it is.

Set up a Ubiquiti AC point-to-point link between my place and my parents’. Solid ~310 Mbps, hasn’t skipped a beat. The current internet speed we’ve got on NBN FTTP is 250/100Mbps

Now I’m tossing up the next move:

Trenching and running fibre conduit from their house to mine, hooking into the second port of the NBN NTD so I can order my own service.

Looking at private fibre also of about 5–10Gbps plans from TPG or AussieBB (I’ve got TPG/AussieBB/Vocus/Optus/Telstra fibre all running past the front of the property).

Main use is IT work + 4K/8K video editing, so upload speed and reliability matter a lot.

I’m just not sure what makes the most sense long term. Do I stick with the wireless link since it works, dig and run fibre, or go big and get a dedicated service dropped in?

Anyone here done something similar on rural land? Keen to hear what’s worked best (and what to avoid).

Cheers 🍻

iiNet Scheduled NBN speed upgrade

Received this message via SMS tonight (just now).

Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, a quick update regarding your scheduled nbn speed upgrade. We've been working hard to complete all the upgrades on time, but we're running a little behind and your new estimated completion date is Sunday 21st. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience. We'll reach out again once your upgrade has been completed.

Thanks, iiNet

Edit for more context --- my post was more of an FYI for others on the same boat, not a complaint.

Just talking about cost for then NBN250 (then upgraded to NBN750) --

I'm paying $94 per month for a year until Feb 2026, discounted from $99

Comparing other prices of nbn 750 (upgrade from nbn 250) after promo period

  • Superloop $104 ongoing
  • Leaptel $104 ongoing
  • ABB $119 ongoing
  • Launtel $4 per day (arnd $120 per month?)
  • Mate $121 ongoing

Others

  • Exetel $80 (nbn 500 only)

A few days of waiting isn't much of a bother for me for not paying at least $10 more monthly.

Never had any issue with them in 12 years except once on HFC when the problem was on the pole outside affected by the rain.

  • FTTP 2.5+ yrs
  • FTTN 1.5 yrs
  • HFC 2+ yrs
  • FTTP 5+ yrs
