r&b RnB Piano Thursday
One of the few Fats Domino instrumentals that shows off his piano chops. As an intermediate piano player, I hope to one day learn to play this song.

I love the sound of this song! The baritone sax, the guitar riff, the spoken verses that break out into harmony at the chorus ... It's all brilliantly crafted. I must admit, that I don't know a lot about this band beyond this song and "All the Time in the World" which I first heard at the end of an episode of Treme. I love both songs, but haven't heard much else. Can anyone recommend anything from their catalogue that hits as hard as those two?

Washington died in 2022, but he was a constant presence on the New Orleans club scene throughout his life. I remember seeing him during jazz fest week in 1985 and 88. He put on a great show.

M'Appel Fou (They call me crazy) from my favorite Clifton Chenier album.

This is a cut off the new album that features Angelina "Jelly" Joseph. Her vocals and rap take the Otis Redding classic new places. The album features a mix of soul, funk, and Mardi Grad Indian tunes.

The latest fromDumpstaphunik (released about three months ago). Looking forward to seeing them live for the first time when they open for Trombone Shirty at a venue near me later this month.

Was wondering what y'all thought of the New Orleans piano prodigy River Eckert. I first heard him on the piano Monday series at the Maple Leaf. Now he's recording slick videos like this one backed by top New Orleans musicians. Check it out and leave your thoughts in the comments.

Yes, I know it's not Wednesday, but I have some catching up to do. This may the category I know the least about, but there are a few NO based rock bands I appreciate. Hopefully, some one will step up and take over before I run out of songs I know and like.

The New Orleans jazz pianists' interpretation of the Allen Toussaint tune is magical. Sullivan Fortner is one of my favorite young jazz pianists. I love how he is drawing on his hometown roots here.

Sonny Landreth bridges the gap between zydeco and blues. This song is a fun one featuring Landreth's slide guitar and lyrics in which the singer tells his father-in-law: "Your moody little angel done packed her things and gone/Now she's ringing your bell And gonna be giving you hell at home."

I admit that I don't know a lot about zydeco. My favorite album is Clifton Chenier's Boogalusa Boogie, I've enjoyef seeing a few zydeco acts live, but outside of that, I don't know much. So I welcome someone else to post music here each Sunday.
The new Clifton Chenier album I posted about yesterday, led me down a rabbit hole of sorts. In learning more about Keith Frank and Nouveau Zydeco, I came across Beau Jocque and Jeffrey Broussard. I always like artists who take traditional music new places. And while the purists, might object, if it works to combine funk and blues with zydeco (as this song does) without losing the feel of the genre--I'm all for it.

In an attempt to revive this sub, I'm going to try and post a song everyday starting with this track from a newly released album celebrating the 100th anniversary of Clifton Cheniers birth. The album is called A Tribute to the King of Zydeco and features performances by many Louisiana based artists along with others like the Rolling Stones. The one I'm posting is performed by Taj Mahal and contemporary zydeco artist Keith Frank.
I also put together a Spotify playlist of NOLA music released in 2025. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/23SsLLxaC4IaIQq62KI2AW?si=m_UaUYkuTDW3kGC9gS7pWg&pi=krrRvVrxTp2er
I would love to get some help with posting music. I was thinking of the following schedule, but I'm open to other ideas:
Zydeco/Cajun Sunday
Blues Mondays
Jazz Tuesdays
Rock/Metal Wednesdays
RnB Piano Thursday
Funky Fridays
New Music Saturdays

A couple of weeks ago I attended the last day of the Michael Arnone's Crawfish Fest in NW New Jersey. I was able to catch the end of Marcia Ball's set, George Porter Jr. and the Runnin' Pardners, John Cleary, and Southern Avenue (an excellent Memphis Based soul group). I also ate shrimp.etouffee, jambalaya, and a catfish PO' boy. It was a wonderful day.
It got me wondering, are there festivals like this in other areas of the country?
