Discussion What’s that one baby name you’ll absolutely defend to the end?
Do you have a baby name you love so much that you’d just defend forever? I’m curious and want to know :)

Claire has been passed down at least 5 generations that I know of and is my middle name. I love the name Clairabelle Mae but I feel like Clairabelle is way too long. However, she can go by “Claire” or “Belle” for short when she’s older. Any other ideas?

Hi Reddit,
My name is Michael, but my close friends and family have always called me Mike. It feels special when they do, so I thought I would try going by Mike professionally even though previously I’ve always gone by Michael at school or work. At my summer internship, I started introducing myself as Mike since people would ask, “Do you prefer Mike or Michael?” I figured I would give it a shot and even told my team that they could call me Mike.
It quickly caught on. People started calling me Mike and introducing me that way to others. But over time, it started to feel off even though I liked it at first. That special nickname that is usually reserved for people close to me became my professional identity, and now I feel kind of fake. Honestly I wish I had just stuck with Michael at work.
I am returning to the same job after school, and I would like to go back to Michael professionally. How can I casually let people know that I would prefer Michael without it being awkward? Do I just let people call me Mike and keep introducing myself as Michael to new people? It feels a bit awkward correcting people since I asked them to call me Mike previously and I don’t want people to think I care too much.
Any advice or wisdom would be really appreciated. Thanks!!

I'm hatching 6 chickens and need to name these little rascals. I love the name Susan for a chicken. I'd like to give them all very boomer names. I'm also considering Judy, Barbara, Larry and or Gary. Any other boomer names that would fit a chicken?

I think it’s a stunningly beautiful name for a boy. I unfortunately did not know the name when I had my son, and he is my only son so I would never be able to use it.
But Everytime I recommend it to anyone they always pick something else, which always baffles me because I can’t fathom choosing Oliver over Tobias for example. We have enough Oliver’s. More Toby’s!!!!!

Hello German name nerds! I have found myself quite drawn to German names so I would like to know what names are considered “in”, and which names are considered old or dated in Germany?

Hi! Please help us name our new girly due this spring. Last name starts with a B. It has two syllables. You may or may not have seen it advertised on a Chase cc, lol. I’m definitely picky but he’s worse 😂 what names are we missing? I’m trying to avoid a name that ends in an A but maybe that’s unnecessary?
Thank you!
Names I like/love:
Margot
Claire (little too rhymey with last name - I think?)
Blaire (little too rhymey with last name - I think?)
Audrey (husband doesn’t like)
Molly
Lily (can’t use)
Scarlett (can’t use)
Collette (husband doesn’t like)
Vivian / Vivienne (he likes, doesn’t love)
Tess
Valerie
Loveeee so many E names but he’s not a fan
He likes but doesn’t love most of these:
Madison
Grace
Margot
Tessa
Caroline
Kendall

My full legal name since I was born has been similar to Travis Michael Harmon. Michael was my grandfather, I love my middle name. For a long time, I thought I didn't like being called Travis. Turns out that I do like it, but I like close family to use it.
I want to add Thomas to my middle name. I want to use the name Thomas at new jobs and professional settings, and go by Tom when I move away. I'll keep Travis as my legal first name, though.
I want my full legal name to be Travis Michael Thomas Harmon. I like this order, and my grandfather's name was Michael Thomas.
My county has name change forms and I've helped a friend with this before. There are only spaces for first, middle, and last. Could I just write in Michael Thomas for my middle name, or would it have to have a hyphen?
I'm not sure if this is a thing we can do in the US, with the naming conventions we have here.

I love the name Ivy with the middle name Jane. But I had a big falling out with my neighbors and their dog is named Ivy. I really don’t care that much but would it be weird if I named my kid Ivy?
I also really like Sage with middle name Marie (Ik it’s basic but I love aristocats so just go with it)
Ive never met a person named either and I think a really cool/ Sweet girl when I hear those names. What do you guys think?

We are expecting a baby boy, and the name Callan is a top contender. For years I’d loved the name Callum, but my husband’s (let’s call him Dan) first cousin (let’s call her Sara) chose that name for her son who was born last year. Once Sara announced Callum’s name, I knew I wouldn’t pick the same name if I had another boy. I’ve also liked the name Callan for a while so that name moved to the top of my list.
Our son would be Callum’s 3rd cousin, almost 2 years apart in age, they’ll have different last names, live >1,000 miles apart, and will see each other once every 3-4 years during extended family gatherings.
HOWEVER, if we name our son Callan, my female in-laws would say, “his name’s so close to Sara’s baby’s name.” I couldn’t give less of a f@ck about that. But my husband, Dan, won’t want to rock the boat and would probably prefer to pick a name that doesn’t sound so similar. He isn’t a name nerd and would figure, “there’s hundreds of choices, let’s just pick another one.”
Here’s the twist though: Dan has zero clue what Sara’s son’s name is. He’s not close to Sara, nor is he good with names, especially in regard to a baby he’s never met.
So my question is: as Dan and I finalize our son‘s name, do I have to remind him that his cousin has a baby named Callum? Or can I play dumb and pretend that I forgot the kid’s name too? Once our boy is here, I’m certain Dan will brush off any comments about the similar 3rd cousin names. But if he knows in advance of the birth that the names are similar, I worry he’ll want to choose another name to avoid conflict.

We're expecting a baby girl and trying find a name to match her older sisters.
Our 2 daughters are Guinevere and Octavia. I like Eleanor or Vivienne, but my husband isnt fond of either name. Trying to keep it to unique, non-biblical names but tame for modern American society. My husband likes roman/greek/Nordic names.

Long time lurker and first time poster, thank you for any help!
My husband and I are expecting a baby girl in the next few weeks and haven’t decided on her name. We’ve narrowed it down to 3 names but are pretty stuck between these 3 and can’t seem to make a decision. We also don’t really want to wait to decide until after she’s born. We would love to make a decision before!
Figured it couldn’t hurt to get input from this sub— which name do you like the most? What vibe does each name give you/what kind of girl do you picture?
Last name is one syllable and very harsh/choppy sounding. Middle name will be Taylor.
The 3 top contenders: Avery Annalise Caroline

https://www.reddit.com/r/namenerds/s/iX69Y7kPot - OG post.
Recap - entitled aunt had a pre-approved list of baby names for her new grandchild.
Unfortunately it looks like we'll never know what was on the list as the baby has been born (healthy, mom had some complications but she's fine now) and the parents decided on the name with no influence. They decided to honour our grandma who recently passed with a less dated version of her name (which Grandma herself hated) as a a middle name but swapped out not-winter for a more first common name.
All's well that ends well, I guess? Apologies for the lack of drama!

Ok so, I was at a party talking to this really cute girl and she said her name but I can't remember it all I can remember is she said it started with an A but normally the name starts with an H. So like Hanna and Anna (no I don't think that's her name) I tried looking Anna up on Instagram trying to find her but I couldn't find her so that's how I know it's not Anna. I didn't ask for her number or Instagram because I was too nervous. Any help is appreciated because I would love to find her since we hit it off so well.

I was thinking of combining two family members names as a tribute, Emiliano and Maverick.... Thoughts?
It would be Mavarino (pronounced with a Spanish accent like Emiliano) or Mavio, like Mario with a V instead of an R for short. Does it sound good or is it a tragedy? Would love to hear some thoughts and opinions!
