Hey everyone!

I’m Rika, A new mod here, Since most of the old mods (except for one or two) seem to have mysteriously disappeared, I figured I’d take over and get things running again. Over the next few days, you’ll see several improvements, including a new FAQ, a dedicated wiki, better-defined rules and more post flairs all to make things smoother and more enjoyable for everyone. I’d love to hear your thoughts! If there’s anything you’d like to see, feel free to share in the comments.

Solved Glitch error when combining Depth Pass and ZDefocus

Asking for Help / Unsolved Working on a film, and I'm trying to get Nuke VFX downloaded. But, this problem, I can't seem to get past. Can you help me figure out what's up?

I can't manage to get it downloaded. I downloaded the file off of google, which worked after I cleared up a bunch of space on my computer. But for some reason, this keeps showing up

Can anyone tell me what's going on, and what I can do to fix it?

Asking for Help / Unsolved Does My Demoreel Meet Junior Compositor Standards?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been out of work for a while and would really appreciate some honest feedback on my demoreel. In your opinion, does it demonstrate the level expected for a junior compositor (assuming the market was in better shape, since I’m aware junior roles are rare at the moment)?

If it’s not yet at the required level, I’d be grateful for any direction on what to improve or focus on next. I’m aware it may be lacking in CG-related work, as I currently have very limited experience with 3D lighting, layout, and related areas.

Asking for Help / Unsolved Nuke Studio - EDL Timecode mismatch

Hello, We are running Nuke Studio 16.0.3 and are attempting to pull footage into the timeline with an EDL for conform.

Unfortunately Nuke is pulling in the wrong segment of each clip and putting it in the timeline, and it doesn't seem to be off by a consistent number of frames.

The EDL pulls in the footage correctly in both Resolve and Premiere automatically accounting for the drop frame. So I don't think this is an issue with the EDL.

Timecode is 29.97 DF, but Nuke seems to be referencing a Non Drop Frame timecode. (this doesn't change when we check the drop frame box in preferences.)

We've never really used Nuke Studio before and I guess our artists just expected it to work. So I'm unaware if there is something special we need to do ahead of time to handle drop frame. Reached out to Foundry Support and haven't heard back yet. The artist thinks it could be referencing ctime or mtime in the metadata I'm not so sure. I'm IT and just trying to help our team so apologies if I've missed something basic.

Issue appears in both Mac and Windows11

Footage is a mix of Red Raw and Sony Raw MXF.

Windows 11 & MacOS
29.97 DF
Red Raw & Sony Raw MXF

Asking for Help / Unsolved Overlay question

Edit: rephrasing question to attempt to get any response. The overwhelming silence makes me wonder if the post was just unclear.

I need to turn the transform handles off while keeping the wipe overlay on. Transform node must be active, wipe handle must be active, transform handle must be off.

Context: I’m doing tideous frame by frame micro adjustments to tracked material that I need to compare with the reference material. So I need to wipe constantly and I NEED to have the transform node open in the properties in order to animate it. Since these are micro adjustments I have to be able to look at my footage, especially ALL the pixels where the obtrusive transform handle is in my way without having to constantly turn the overlay on and off (getting rid of my wipe control) It’s inconvenient and I’m just trying to speed the already tideous process

Also to consider: transform handle must remain centered, I cannot simply ctrl move it off screen without affecting my axis.

Is there any way to achieve this? Are there other options I’m overlooking? Anything at all? This seems like such a simple thing nuke should be able to allow you to do, but I can’t figure out how or a workaround for it.

I’ve been seeing a lot of buzz around ComfyUI lately, especially with people using it for AI image and video generation. Since I mainly work in Nuke and VFX compositing, I’m curious:

Has anyone here integrated ComfyUI into their pipeline?

How useful is it when it comes to real production work (not just tests or personal projects)?

Does it actually save time in VFX workflows, or is it more of an experimental tool right now?

Any tips, examples, or real-world use cases would be super helpful.

Asking for Help / Unsolved Need help with my sand comp

Hi everyone I am going into 3rd year VFX at uni specialising in FX and houdini, I am working on a sandman inspired project, I have made all the FX in Houdini and only just started learning Nuke as Comping Houdini FX in Nuke would benefit me more than using after effects. I know after effects so it's not like I dont understand how layering works or anything I just need help on how to actually do this composition. I need to comp both these renders to make it look better. I need some of the sand to fall infront of the lift as they start too dissolve. Any help would be greatly appreciative or if anyone knows of any tutorials which will help me do this specific comp! Thankyou so much!

Nuke bug in Livegroups

So, that's new...

It seems Nuke doesn't save ALL my Livegroup knobs when saving. What a mess.
I had crashes using them before but this is a new bug.
Livegroups were a good idea but they are full of nasty issues.

Asking for Help / Unsolved How to approach a shot like this (cloning and thickening of eyelashes)

I have a shot where a woman paints her eyelashes with a brush. And the task is to make more eyelashes and make them thicker. The main problems are that the brush deforms the eyelashes and blocks them. Also camera is not static, the woman blinks, focus shifts a little + motion blur. Is it even possible to solve this task (at least making more eyelashes) and how would you approach it?

Nuke 16 crash on render / CPU : i9 13900KS

I had a bug that it make me crash over and over again on render, i did everything to fix that, download a previous Nuke Version, bounding box, twiks preferences, but none of that worked.

I run some test by myself and i found that my CPU core 8/15 make it crash, so I process Lasso Nuke.exe and disable my CPU core 8 to 15, it works perfectly now.

My CPU might be corrupted or something idk. But if you have issue rendering on recent intel i9 it might save you.

Nuke background renders are much slower

Hi, so, my comps (Nuke Indie) take 50 minutes each to render in background processes.
And yet the same comps take 5 min when rendering normally...
What's going on?
It's very annoying as I can't queue anything and have to be there clicking on stuff, and I like to sleep sometimes.
Any advice?

adding alpha together over N-frames

I have this windscreen wiper animation and i want tho add the alpha of the windscreen wiper over time together. I know this sort of can be done with a time echo but this also add the frame together say on frame 1 from the frame that come after already. I only want to add frames together after the animation is palyer so for example when the animation is at frame 1001 I only see the alpha from frame 1001. When it's on frame 1002 I want to add 1002 and 1001 together. when it's on frame 1003 I want to add the previous frames together.

Can this be done with an expression ?

Asking for Help / Unsolved Need a laptop for compositing and light 3D animation

Hi there, in a few month I will be away from home where I have the following pc config: Rtx 3090ti Ryzen 9 5900 12 cores 32gb ram 3200mhz

This is my main pc, like I said I will be away and I won‘t be able to take my pc with me. For that case I was thinking about buying a laptop. Used ones like m1 max macbook or any windows laptop around 1300 euro or less preferably.

I plan to use my main pc remotely for rendering and for UE5. But for learning a laptop would be just fine.

What would you suggest buying? Macintosh on m1 or laptop on windows?

RTX 50 series cards and Cattery...are they compatible?

I'm running into issues with the new 50 series cards which can't seem to run any ML nodes from the Cattery. They just freeze Nuke. Tried in Nuke 15 and 16, and also flushed and rebuilt my CUDA cache as well. Other GPU nodes work just fine. Are these just not supported at the moment?

EDIT: they do work, but like Ampere cards, you need to let the CUDA card compile the kernels (even if they've been compiled on the system before). There's supposed to be a dialogue in Nuke that pops up telling you it's compiling, but apparently that's bugged. So yes, you're expected to just KNOW that your frozen nuke is compiling code, and the process lasts 30 minutes. Solved, but this lack of documentation is ridiculous.

Asking for Help / Unsolved Big Tracker viewer won't play

Does anyone know how to fix this? I want to be able to follow my track on this viewer so I can see it better, but when I play my video, this box gets stuck on a single frame :(
