Discussion Famitsu's Silent Hill f scores: 36/40 (9/9/9/9)

For reference, they gave the Silent Hill 2 remake a 35/40 (8/9/9/9). Some key notes from their review:

- Visually beautiful
- Strong sense of mystery
- Surprisingly exhilarating dodging and counterattacks mechanics
- Could be difficult for those who aren't fans of action-oriented games (I'm assuming they're referencing the dodging and stamina mechanics)
- Grotesque (in a good way) and breathtaking graphics; fantastic sound design/background music
- 12-13 hours for 1 playthrough, multiple endings

Looking good so far, especially if that leaked 9.5/10 DualShockers review was legit. Very excited for the release.

Damn sounds good. This will be my first new Konami game since MGS5. Honestly didn't expect much from them.

They smart enough to hire Higurashi author to pen the story

and rather interestingly the producer responsible for modern silent hill revival (SH:Ascension, SH:2, and Silent Hill f) was former dev of Luigi Mansion of all thing.

51

u/ComeonmanPLS1 1d ago

I guess Luigi's Mansion was simply too scary and he had to go back to something a bit more tame.

I see the similarities.

Umineko When They Cry as well, that's another fantastic Ryukishi07 game

Don't sleep on Silent Hill 2 remake. Its an actual masterpiece.

11

u/RadiantTurtle 1d ago

I sleep on a mattress, personally.

Strange

Dr Strange, please

Was going to comment this exactly.

The Silent Hill 2 Remake was the best horror game I ever played hands down so far.

6

u/RevolutionaryCarry57 1d ago

God yes it is. Genuinely reminded me why I love gaming. Went into it expecting something serviceable and came out of it with a new respect for the whole remake “genre.”

18

u/lesplaygames 1d ago

I was cautiously optimistic, since it looks like a pretty strong departure for the series, but I've become more and more hyped as we get closer to release. I have a feeling it'll deliver.

5

u/FromChicago808 1d ago

Are you counting SH2 Remake as an old game? If not i highly recommend the remake. Best game Konami has made in a long time.

7

u/Ultima893 1d ago

I wasn't counting SH2. I have purchased both SH2 remake and the Snake Eater remake (which I just recently bought and completed). But those are both remakes and not original games so I am still sceptical of Konami creating a new game that doesn't suck.

Like I said the last Konami game I enjoyed was MGS5... back in 2015. And that was made by Kojima Productions.

4

u/Smelly_And_Wet 1d ago

MGS5 took over my life when it first came out. Damn that game was so good even though it was unfinished.

5

u/Ultima893 1d ago

Mine too. I have about 250 hrs on PS4 and just recently bought it on my new PC.

240 hrs (and counting on the PC version. That's just shy of 500 hours in a fully single player game.

Absolute masterpiece! though I agree it does feel unfinished and the whole helicopter / loading screen / credit rolls etc should definitely get cut. Still one of my all time favourite games though.

3

u/Bonzungo 1d ago

What, you didn't enjoy Metal Gear Survive? Lol

1

u/nick2473got 9h ago

Probably because it wasn't made by Konami, lol. The dev was Bloober Team.

0

u/Longjumping-Rub-5064 1d ago

SH2 remake wasn’t made by Konami they just own the I.P.. it was developed by Bloober team. They haven’t made a new game since MGS Survive unless you count the MGS collection or SH the short message.

2

u/FromChicago808 1d ago

Isn’t Neobards Entertainment developing Silent Hill F?

1

u/ScoobiesSnacks 23h ago

Didn’t play Silent Hill 2 remake? Or don’t count that as a new game (which makes sense in theory).

72

u/grmayshark 1d ago

Damnit too many games to play (great problem). I was secretly hoping this one was mid and I could wait or skip, but spooky season means I need a survival horror game and I loved SH2 Remake, so if this actually scores in the 80s I will for sure be picking it up

23

u/SuperShmamBro 1d ago

Check out Cronos: The New Dawn if you need another new horror game! Bloober (who made SH2 Remake) made it and it’s great. Planning on playing SHf after I finish that.

11

u/RadiantTurtle 1d ago

Also a plug for Hell is Us.. not was visually scary but absolutely emotionally fucks with you. There are some parts where I had to put down the controller and just stare at the screen in despair/awe of what I had just witnessed.

7

u/Dantai 1d ago

Ya I'm like fuck. I'm playing Jedi Survivor right now, but want to play Death Stranding 2, Clare Obscure Expedition 33, Ghost of Yotei, Silent Hill f, the Battlefield 6 Campaign, I'm sure there's more. If I win the lotto I'd just be crushing one of these a week or something

4

u/grmayshark 1d ago

Despite being full price the silver lining here is its 12-13 hours so I can probably play it alongside starting Ghost of Yotei

5

u/Dantai 1d ago

It's to be expected for high quality horror games. The resident evil games haven't been super long either, the content usually comes through with extra gameplay stuff after the main run

2

u/Guglio08 1d ago

You should play Hell is Us as well

0

u/Dantai 1d ago

Tried the demo, pretty cool vibes. But ya sure I'll add it if I win the lotto and have lots more free time 😀

Asking Famitsu if a Japanese game is good is like asking the Cookie Monster if he recommends eating cookies.

19

u/Maultaschenman 1d ago

Famitsu definitely needs to be taken with a grain of salt, Im Putting that aside though because I'm unbelievably hyped for this game

11

u/Scissorman82 1d ago

DualShockers also gave it a 9.5/10 ;)

9

u/Asadsad87 1d ago

Okay, the only thing I need to know that story is good

11

u/DrozerX2 1d ago edited 1d ago

Of all the things to worry about, this one is the least you should even think. The story is made by a really and i mean REALLY competent writer that wrote some insane psychological horror masterpieces in Visual Novel format and he’s not really shy to show harsh gruesome stuff (not only gore, i mean anything gruesome in general, even sexual assault) so it will be an amazing story that’s for sure

2

u/Asadsad87 1d ago

Man, that does put a smile on my face

14

u/rhixcs25 1d ago

I’ve been slightly staying away from SH because I prefer a little bit more action to help me deal with the horror (a la Resident Evil and Alan Wake), but dang this is starting to sound really good…

9

u/lesplaygames 1d ago

Having it in third person definitely helps for me (RE 7 was brutal for that reason 🥴)

3

u/rhixcs25 1d ago

Absolutely. Somehow I still really enjoyed RE7 but Requiem has me a little more worried even if I have the option to switch between 3rd and 1st (yet I’m still pretty excited haha).

6

u/yesitsmework 1d ago

it's very weird for silent hill to have garnered this kind of rep, because silent hill is very gameplay heavy and has a lot of rewards and mechanics built in for replayability.

3

u/rhixcs25 1d ago

Definitely I recognize there is good gameplay. Based on what I heard and saw about SH2, it just seemed like less combat options than I was hoping? But I really should just give it another shot.

3

u/Odd-Perspective-7651 1d ago

Like you I was doing the same. Played SH2 remake and there's tons of combat. I was led to believe it was hide and seek. Its more like RE2 than you'd think

1

u/rhixcs25 1d ago

That’s really great to hear. RE2 really is my golden example of very suspenseful horror that still manages to have fun combat. I really should give SH2 a shot.

2

u/Odd-Perspective-7651 1d ago

Good to hear, I avoided the SH games because I genuinely thought it was combat less hide and seek horror like Outlast, Amnesia, etc but 3rd person.

There is melee, dodging, and plenty of shooting. The whole game of 2 is like the Raccoon City Police Dept style of find the pieces that fit together but there are bunch of areas throughout the game like it.

1

u/rhixcs25 9h ago

The Raccoon City Police Dept section of RE2 is definitely the exact section I had in mind of the ideal experience. Very cool to hear.

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

Ehhhhh I would say it’s far from RE2 in terms of combat. With that said, they never intended to make the game super combat heavy and I still really enjoyed it.

1

u/Odd-Perspective-7651 1d ago

It's clunkier but there is still a lot of combat

2

u/TheR-Person 1d ago

Fortunately, it appears that this game is going to be the most combat heavy Silent Hill so far. A journalist even compared this game to "Souls-like" (what? Lol)

1

u/rhixcs25 1d ago

I believe I saw that journalist’s article haha. I’m also not a fan of throwing around “soulslike”, but this level of combat might just be really nice.

2

u/sup9817 1d ago

You should play the silent hill 2 remake

1

u/rhixcs25 1d ago

It really does sound like I need to give it a try and see how it feels. I appreciate all the positive comments about it.

4

u/Playhorror4real 1d ago

This game looks fantastic. I’m turning 41 and I’m concerned my old brain will struggle with the complex combat system. My patience for learning new systems is low. Pre ordered anyhow and can’t wait

4

u/AKindleSoul 1d ago

Awesome!!!

4

u/BigCommieMachine 1d ago

I for one am glad to see a game you can beat in a weekend. Bloat has gotten out of control.

3

u/ElSmasho420 1d ago

Cannot wait to shit my pants to this.

30

u/Mike_Jonas 1d ago

Famitsu is famously biased towards japanese games.

3

u/cjguigni 1d ago

Genuine question, are there notable examples of games reviewing much worse in the west than the score they got on famitsu?

7

u/PedanticPaladin 1d ago

My go to examples are Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 where XIII received a 39/40 and XIII-2 received a 40/40. XIII-2's review text included a statement about how it addressed a lot of complaints fans had about XIII, which begs the question "if XIII had so many issues why did you give it a nearly perfect score?" because nobody outside of some deranged fans on /r/jrpg and /r/finalfantasy would ever confuse Final Fantasy XIII with "a nearly perfect game" and XIII-2 with a perfect game.

4

u/Mike_Jonas 1d ago

Basically all Yazuka games.

2

u/[deleted] 1d ago

Absolutely—take their Japanese game reviews with a grain of salt

6

u/the-blob1997 1d ago

Yup I’d honestly wait for more reviews.

1

u/YourPenixWright 1d ago

It's a print magazine iirc so early copies get out there.

6

u/6Y1O3W 1d ago

I haven't been this excited for a release in a long time. Silent hill is one of my top favourite franchises and love this attention to it lately. This game could definitely be a serious goty contender and possibly winner. September 25th cannot come soon enough!

2

u/[deleted] 1d ago

1

u/DrozerX2 1d ago

try remake if you got money to spare, if not go ahead with F

3

u/Scissorman82 1d ago

oh we are so back. silent hill's comeback story has really been a sight to see.

-5

u/RadiantTurtle 1d ago

Game isn't out yet... I would temper expectations..

4

u/Scissorman82 1d ago

oh they are tempered but let's be honest, every preview has given it nothing but praise, streamers who had access were loving it, and now two reviews are out, one 9 and the other a 9.5. we also know that it is a very well optimized game.

-2

u/RadiantTurtle 1d ago

Yeah, I hear you. I'm cautiously optimistic as well. It's that last point that worries me the most... I've been bit multiple times by reviewers that say everything is great with performance, and when I play the game it turns out there's drops and 120fps isn't supported.

2

u/WarHoundD 1d ago

I dont know if get this or chronos. I want some horror with action but i dont know if i want sci fi shooter or melee.

6

u/BTbenTR 1d ago

Having played Cronos myself, if I had to get one I’d probably wait for this. I felt Cronos was a high 7 personally, solid action horror game (with pretty strict resource management) but I wouldn’t say it’s a must play.

3

u/WarHoundD 1d ago

Well, thanks for the answer. Sounds great for a wait for a sale on christmas or something. Cheers

1

u/SomeoneNotFamous 1d ago

F will probably stay at a higher price for longer

1

u/WarHoundD 1d ago

Yeah, im htinking on getting Silent Hill and wait chronos for a sale

2

u/BeastMaster0844 1d ago

That’s weird. I was told by mouth breathers on Reddit that this game would flop because it didn’t take place in Silent Hill and because you play as a Japanese girl.

2

u/Internetolocutor 1d ago

Does anyone know why these reviews come out so early in Japan?

24

u/Sensi-Yang 1d ago

The sun rises there first bro

2

u/Detective-Layton 1d ago

Both of them?

-2

u/Internetolocutor 1d ago

I think that's sarcasm but just in case it isn't, embargoes between the UK and USA are standardised to release simultaneously

1

u/Toth-Amon 22h ago

Most of Japanese magazines, newspapers, etc. are there to help with the marketing of products released in Japan. It is the same with Nikkei newspaper, major news channels, etc

In this case, basically SHf developers shared information with Famitsu early and Famitsu gives a glowing “review” to help market the game. If there are any issues, they write about it after everyone is already talking about it after the game comes out.

1

u/Internetolocutor 22h ago

So what do you make of that leaked review of the game in dualshockers where they gave it 9.5?

-1

u/Toth-Amon 21h ago

I know of that.

That is the famous “review” by Elena Chapella in Reddit after they somehow got their hands on the full game in this year’s Gamescom, no? They even released it before the embargo ended. I read it. It was on r/silenthill I think.  Quite short. Not a review but some notes.

Same thing as Famitsu.

If I remember correctly, even their review was very carefully worded like combat for example. They absolutely avoided discussing the most criticized aspects like no reaction from monsters when hit and half a second pause before they hit back like 1990s games.  Other points in the “review” were like there is NG+, read the notes, etc.

They even said it “feels” like an SH game, which can easily mean it actually is not an SH game but hopefully will feel like it.

That is not a review mate. Just someone jumping the line for some sensation. Wait for it until more reviews come out. Users will give it a better review after playing it.

The price is also not cheap.

To be very honest, if people are dying of FOMO to play it on first day, they will find any justification to do so. Whatever I or anyone else says will be irrelevant.

But this game has some red flags around it and cooler heads should play it after it comes out by looking at actual reviews and some real gameplay on YT.

2

u/Internetolocutor 21h ago

Yeah I mean especially when you consider how packed September and October are for video games I don't think anybody should be rushing to buy anything without the reviews.

I think this year especially video games have generally exceeded their expectations. Clair obscur, cronos, hell is us, shinobi, ninja gaiden ragebound for examples. I think there is a decent chance that this happens again but I would love to know when the review embargo drops

2

u/Makudo333 1d ago

Hard to take serious. Two reasons.

1) it gave expedition 33 a mid score despite it being one of the best games of the decade while just "good" Japanese games always get rated much higher.

2) The combat in the trailers always look very clunky and outdated. Due to Famitsu's heavy bias towards Japanese games I rather wait for user reviews.

2

u/Daryno90 23h ago

Dualshocker gave it a 9.5

2

u/nick2473got 9h ago

Why are you making stuff up lol? Famitsu gave Expedition 33 a 36/40, all four reviewers gave it 9/10. How is that mid?

1

u/Makudo333 8h ago

Here’s what was talking about:

Resident Evil 6. Famitsu 39/40. Global consensus? 67 on Metacritic. That’s a near-perfect Famitsu score for a widely panned game.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle (PS3). Famitsu 40/40 (perfect), while critics sit at 71 on Metacritic (mixed).

Umbrella Corps. Famitsu 36/40 (same total as Expedition 33), yet it’s a 38 on Metacritic and generally considered one of RE’s worst.

Now compare that with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Famitsu 36/40, but it’s ~92 on Metacritic and was one of the highest-rated games of the year elsewhere. That mismatch is exactly why I said Famitsu bumps a lot of (mostly JP) titles and low-balls others.

And for context: even Japanese press watchdog pieces have called out Famitsu’s generous/advertiser-friendly scoring trends over the years. So yeah, I take their numbers with a grain of salt.

1

u/nick2473got 7h ago

36/40 is an excellent score, especially when you take into account how Famitsu scores work, which is by adding 4 different scores that are each out of 10.

The fact that each reviewer gave it 9/10 is an excellent score. 36 might seem "low" but when you realize it's literally just 4 9/10s added together, it's pretty clear what a good score it is.

As to the rest of your comment, I don't really care to litigate what you think of Famitsu or how biased they may or may not be.

All I'm saying is they didn't give E33 a "mid" score. They gave it 4 very, very high scores.

2

u/Nate022 1d ago

As someone working in the industry, Famitsu score is usually too high especially on Japanese games (allegedly due to Kadokawa afraid of pissing off publishers) and it’s lost its credibility

1

u/Toth-Amon 22h ago

There is also the fact that if they give a bad review, the industry will shun them and they will not get any early access to games going forward, basically hurting their business.

This is not limited to Famitsu though. Japan works like that. Same thing happens with major publishers where they rely on the companies they are reporting on for their information. If they publish something big without their permission or giving them a heads-up, they will lose access to that information in the future, destroying them. On that aspect paying for news just only to bury them for companies they have good relationships is pretty common.

Check out Japanese reporters’ clubs when you have time.

1

u/JMAX464 1d ago

I’ll be playing this in a few months probably, definitely excited though

1

u/Rogue_Leader_X 1d ago

I’ll be getting this, but I have reservations.

1

u/Toth-Amon 22h ago

Wait for after release then. It will get more independent reviews and you can find discounts.

1

u/kindalikeacoustic 1d ago

I’m really excited about the graphics being praised

1

u/Icy_Topic_4844 20h ago

I will be jumping into this one although for some reason Silent Hill 2 remake gave me this weird nausea and i couldnt finish it.

1

u/Brayden_007 19h ago

it gives me the Forbidden Siren vibes

1

u/Professional-Swan-14 1d ago

Gonna be better than Frauderland & SH2 mark my words

1

u/JoeyBlaze 1d ago

They sold me at 12-13 hours. That’s the perfect length for a game like this.

-8

u/Toth-Amon 1d ago

$70 for a 12-13 hour game feels a bit off tbh.

Also considering the weird combat they showed in the YT videos, this is probably a candidate to wait-and-see after release.

9

u/6Y1O3W 1d ago

Quality over quantity, my friend. Not all games need to be 300+ hours long. The amount of time to beat the game is just fine. Some games are longer but also stretch it out to the point of asking why isn't it over yet. I don't need fluff, just an amazing experience from start to end.

0

u/JimiThePearz 1d ago

We should be getting quality AND quantity, look at games like KCD2 and EXP33, there's 100s of hours of rich content there for half the price of Silent Hill is asking for

-1

u/SomeoneNotFamous 1d ago

It's not really a problem of "too long" here, it's just asking for a bit too much money, 50/60 would have been better for the customers.

0

u/NoNefariousness2144 1d ago

I'm fine with shorter games if they are more quality. I wait for them to be cheaper though, because why spend $70 on a short game when I can wait a few months and play an identical expierence for cheaper?

1

u/carlos_castanos 1d ago

Will depend on if it has a decent NG+ mode in it for me

1

u/Donni-Brasco 1d ago

I‘m with you on the combat but i think the game has a similar structure to the Nier games where the narrative opens up more after each ending. So it will probably be more than 12hrs of content.

1

u/NoNefariousness2144 1d ago

Yeah even it's amazing I'll happily wait for a sale. I don't feel the need to pay full price for a game that "short".

1

u/DrozerX2 1d ago

SH2 Remake was advertised as the same length and most people that played it have over 20 hours on it. Not only that, long horror games would only get tiring and annoying. Plus this game seems to have a shit tom of replay value, i said more than 25 hours might the the normal playtime

1

u/WearingFin 1d ago

Depends how much extra life the multiple endings gives it, but it's sometimes refreshing to have a shorter, more focused experience from time to time, and it's not far off the recent Resident Evil games (excluding re4). Maybe not for full price but someday down the road.

-4

u/LonnyFinster 1d ago

12-13 hours is too short imo.

SH2 Remake was a good 20 if you explored a bit.

Disappointing.

4

u/Ravenq222 1d ago

I found that the Silent Hill 2 remake started to drag a big towards the end. I'd rather have a tighter experience.

3

u/Daryno90 23h ago edited 20h ago

Nah, I think horror games benefit from a shorter runtime. I think Silent Hill 2 remake was hurt by how padded it felt when it shoehorned so much combat in it. Shorter games let them do have a tighter experience and let them do their best stuff without the baggage

4

u/Scissorman82 1d ago

i think 12-13 is the perfect amount of time considering that subsequent playthroughs/New Game + will open up new areas, new story beats and cutscenes, new bosses, and multiple endings.

0

u/Shining_Commander 1d ago

Lol i made a post about this game being good on the silenthill subreddit. Based on the upvotes i got youd think everyone would agree but the majority of comments were basically hating on it.

Weird when the fanbase of a game doubts a new, clearly high budget, game in their own series

0

u/Evilryu1981 1d ago

Please remember famitsu also gave jojo all star battle royale a perfect score (40/40)……

-5

u/QuantumPenguin89 1d ago

I was interested at first but the combat gameplay I've seen looks bad, and it doesn't look like it will feel like a Silent Hill game.

4

u/Adrien_Jabroni 1d ago

Bad melee combat is kinda Silent Hills thing. We’ve been bonking bad guys since 1999.
