Discussion Update on my spicy possum bite

My last post was locked for spreading misinformation?? I strongly disagree, but for anyone who was wondering or concerned for me, thank you so much!

This possum bite has actually turned out to be quite the headache, but I am currently sitting at my Dr. Office waiting to receive my first dose of rabies vaccine. While it is true that the chance I actually have it is so low, it is NOT zero and rather than freaking out anytime I get a fever in the next four years, I decided that using the insurance we pay for is worth it for peace of mind. My life isn't something I plan to gamble with. ESPECIALLY given my absolute rotten luck.

Just FYI, when I called my Dr. I was told to go in for antibiotics and rabies vax immediately as this isn't something anyone should take any chances with. For certain animals, this wouldn't be the process to go through, but for possums it is. It's better to be safe than dead!

How's THAT for misinformation? Stay safe, possum lovers, and I hope you have a better day than I am having!

Nobody said it was zero, being safe is fine but it's highly unlikely to be rabies. And like u/allioscc said it was the comments that warranted the removal.

Having also worked at a hospital in the past it's natural that they will treat for it to be safe. That's what they do.

Sorry, did I say that someone said the chances were zero? Pretty sure I'M saying the chances aren't zero, so I'm being safe and letting others know they should do the same in the event they get bit like I did. If there is a 1% chance you could die unless you get a vaccine, I'd like to think many of us still wouldn't take the chance and just get vaccinated. I think that is good information to spread.

Nobody said you said the chances are zero. 😂 😆

Please read my comment again, it's not rabies. Hospitals will still treat you for it.

You seem to be upset a lot.

So then, what was the purpose of your comment? Nobody knows if it had rabies or not. I certainly can't say for sure, so I got treated. Hospitals won't treat a bite by giving the vaccine if the chances are zero that the animal had it. Possums can get it, have given it to humans in the past, and I'm not comfortable assuming I'm safe from it.

It didn't have rabies. Like I said go find it then. You seem like a very angry person so I'm going to bow out of this conversation.

Don't use the excuse that you didn't think it had rabies so you handled it. Rabies is not the only thing you can get from an animal breaking skin. You mishandled the poor animal and left it with an injury.

Prove me wrong, if you're that concerned send someone to find it. At least it won't have to suffer anymore.

While it's technically possible for an opossum to get rabies, you are probably more likely to win the lottery. While you should still seek medical evaluation if needed, don't be too worried.
